Describe and demo how to create a new ontology call pizza.owl
Describe the main building block of an OWL ontology - Class.
Demo on how to enable Pellet reasoner and start using.
Classes Disjoint: no individual can be an instance of more than one of those classes.
RDF: Resource Description Framework. Also can be viewed as text file.
Bulk create multiple classes, with hierarchy (using Tab)
OWL Properties represent relationships. This section introduces 3 types of properties - Object Properties, Data Properties and Annotation Properties.
Properties have a direction, from domain to range. The owl:inverseOf construct can be used to define such an inverse relation between properties.
Functional Properties
Inverse Functional Properties
Transitive Properties
Symmetric and Asymmetric Properties
Relexive and Irreflexive Properties
The domain of a property is the set of all objects that can have that property asserted about it.
The range is the set of all objects that can be the value of the property.
An existential restriction describes a class of individuals that have at least one (some) relationship along a specified property to an individual that is a member of a specified class or datatype.
By design, SPARQL only return the asserted knowledge as result, this add-on video shows you how to query the result including those inferred entities (using one workaround)
IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING ENROLLMENT & COST:
This course is created purely for educational sharing and community contribution, respecting the open-source nature of the original Pizza.owl tutorial and the guidelines of its creators. Please DO NOT purchase this course. Because Udemy's platform rules do not allow me to list courses over 2 hours long as permanently free, a price tag is automatically attached. I maintain a continuous supply of 100% free enrollment coupons for anyone interested. If you land on this page, please do not buy it—instead, simply email me directly to request a free coupon code, or access the full video series for free on my YouTube channel. About the Course
The Protégé is one open-source ontology editor. Mr. Michael DeBellis created a great tutorial using pizza.owl as a sample to show how Protégé works. This course is based on the latest version of that tutorial and guides you step-by-step to create the pizza.owl ontology and practice essential skills (such as queries, rules, and more) that are crucial for building other ontologies and knowledge graphs. A number of hands-on exercises are provided with detailed demos so that you can pick up the knowledge as quickly as possible.
During the course, you will learn how to:
Initialize the Protégé editing environment.
Understand the key elements within an ontology, exploring the concepts of Classes and Individuals.
Work with Object Properties and Data Properties, along with Domains and Ranges.
Apply Restrictions, the Reasoner, SWRL (Semantic Web Rule Language), and SHACL (Shapes Constraint Language) using your newly created pizza.owl ontology.
Query your ontology effectively, covering DL (Description Logic) queries as well as hands-on SPARQL queries (a dedicated SPARQL learning course will follow).
Explore WebProtégé if you are interested in working in a purely web-based environment.
Whether you are using this platform for a structured learning path or utilizing it alongside the YouTube channel resources, my goal is to make these semantic web tools accessible to everyone in the community!
