Mindfulness in Ministry

The course is called Mindfulness in Ministry. Let’s break down these terms so that we can all be of the same understanding before we begin the lessons.

What is mindfulness?

According to the Oxford Dictionary,

“Mindfulness is a way for body and mind to reconnect.”

Other definitions offered by online dictionaries include:

  1. the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something

  2. a mental state achieved by concentrating on the present moment, while calmly accepting the feelings and thoughts that come to you


Self Awareness is the key to living a successful entrepreneurial or brand lifestyle. Self Awareness is the key to living a successful entrepreneurial or brand lifestyle.

For the purpose of this class, when we say Mindfulness in Ministry, we mean three conscious realizations:

  1. Being in the authenticity of who you are, which is,

  2. When what you think, feel and do are in complete harmony, in so doing,

  3. You are able to consciously execute God’s will and purpose for your life in order to attract His blessings.

What is Self-Branding?

I AM: Your personal brand begins with the intention, purpose and the will of God in your life. However, it does not end there. For many faith-based individuals, their outcome, success and rewards are totally reliant on God, even in cases where we repeat to ourselves that ‘faith without works is dead’, we still reserve that our outcome is and was a result of God’s stay on our blessings. I [We] would like to open your thoughts to a different possibility, if you don’t already think this way.

Following the understanding that God has His purpose and His will for your life, is what comes after the phrase “I am…” And finally, the third determining factor, your preparation, uptake and implementation of His purpose to heal, help and create wealth. For a lot of us, the thing we enjoy doing the most we do for free. Then we engage in work we do not enjoy to pay our bills.

The first thing I would like you to understand is this thought: what you do and who you are, are two completely different things. And, none of these are necessarily your purpose. Your purpose is not for you, it is for the person you will help, empower or minister to. It is for your clients, and you benefit when you get rewarded for that. Sometimes, for example, we say we are waiting on God, my experience has taught me that it is not God that we wait on, it is self knowledge and discovery of purpose; which then reveals to us who we are. When we embrace our authenticity, we are best positioned to interpret our experiences in favor of God. Nothing just happens, everything is actually in your favor. Learning to leverage that, is the true test of purpose! So what if you could cut that wait time down by simply learning who you are, and His purpose, in order to better interpret the experiences you will have.

“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 1 Peter 4:10”

The key therefore is to achieve authenticity, complete self-awareness. Inauthentic people are people who say one thing and do another; people who feel one thing but say another; people who think one thing but do another. Authenticity, is the opposite of this.

When we are authentic, we align our minds, our mouths, our hearts, and our feet - in other words, we think. Say. feel and do the same thing with complete congruence.

This is how we become real. Until we achieve ‘realness’, we are perpetuating a false image and your own brand become unrecognizable, so you will find it difficult to get people to buy-in to that.

Self-Branding asks the following questions:

  • Who Am I?

  • What I do?

  • What’s my mission?

  • What’s my passion?

  • How I want you to see me

  • Where am I headed?

  • Why I do what i do?

Success is measured in results. It doesn't matter how much effort you put in, people need to see some kind of outcome, projection... end game.

Now, you can set yourself up from the beginning, with an end in mind; or you can take one of the most challenging, time consuming, taxing and sacrificial journeys you will ever take in your life, without absolutely no plan or expected design of what the end should look like. That I have learnt the hard and most expensive way, is madness. It is simply crazy to commit to life as an entrepreneur on hope alone.

This class aims to help you cultivate a strategic mindset, and way of being, to attract and achieve brand development and growth goals through the creation and implementation of strategies for your success. It is about learning how to be strategic to attract the win.

Strategic thinking is the basis upon which strategic intent emanates. Staude in Louw and Venter (2006:69) confirms “that strategic thinking is the first indispensable step in the strategic intent formulation cycle”, implying that in the absence of a strategic thinking, the rest of the strategic intent formulation is in jeopardy”.

The Seven Rules of Intent

  1. Awareness

  2. Conscious mindfulness

  3. Self-driven

  4. Willingness to act

  5. Taking effective actions

  6. Acceptance of truth

  7. Accept reality

According to Michael de Kare-Silver (1997) cited by Macmillan and Tampoe (2008:14) strategy should have only two elements – “future intent and sources of advantage”, Macmillan and Tampoe are suggesting that intent and strategy are inseparable. Strategy, at its most fundamental, signifies a means of achieving one’s own intent whilst frustrating those of the opposition, thus exploiting a mode of winning to secure the future.

• Intention. “Intention refers to what the individual is trying to do or says he would like to do” (Jordaan, Jordaan & Nieuwoudt, 1983 (b): 818). According to Allport (Jordaan et al. 1983 (b): 820-822) “man uses his cognitive abilities to form intentions about his concrete wishes (motives) and to devise plans to realize these intentions”

All the way to here, we have taken you through some experiences. You were given tasks and deliverables. How many of you were successful in completing them all?

If you cannot find the motivation to commit to yourself, learn you, discover your core purpose, understand your values -- the elements that influence your decisions, cater to and build you by understanding how your habits are being cultivated… what kind of net-value do you think you are building? If this is your relationship with self, do you believe that you are taking these measures in your relationships in order to build a profitable network? The answer is a resounding no.

You see, by nature, we treat no one better than we treat ourselves, we are our blueprint of how we treat other people. And if your time is not spent building a network of loyal, indispensable and net-worthy relationships, what are you investing in? How are you spending your life in other words? and, how exactly are you creating wealth?

Have you ever heard the phrase, 'your network is your net-worth'? Who is the five closest persons to you? How much time are you investing in these people? What is the value of your investment? How is this reflecting in your success life, based on what success means to you (as per our last class)?

We attract who we are in our state of B-E-I-N-G. This is determined by our motivators and personal interests.

The word synergy comes from the Greek synergos meaning working together.

Stephen Covey says,

“Synergy is everywhere in nature. If you plant two plants close together, the roots commingle and improve the quality of the soil so that both plants will grow better than if they were separated. If you put two pieces of wood together, they will hold much more than the total weight held by each separately. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. One plus one equals three or more.”

In Habit 6, of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Covey directs our attention to the power of effective relationships. We can achieve so much more when we engage in effective relationships with others than if we acted alone.

Stephen Covey notes that synergy is difficult for many of us as independence is promoted as a strong value in the Western world today. Achieving synergy requires high trust and high cooperation and can lead to better solutions than anyone thought of alone.
