Defining a book theme will help set the tone of the book and will also help maintain the pacing of the book from start to end.
The hook can be written with as little as 50-100 words, depending on the genre, a sentence can be sufficient for most genres, so please do not fixate on the word count. The hook is the line that draws your reader in, the goal is to captivate the reader without giving away too much. A hook can be like that great tasting appetizer that keeps the mouth nice and wet and wanting more. This one sentence (Hook) can then morph into the first chapter of the book (depending on the genre).
When stuck with coming up with a Hook, think about what has drawn you into a delicious book read and what is it about that book that kept you turning the pages? Remember to think of the word “If,” when possible and or depending on the genre, I find that asking questions in most applicable genres can also suffice as a great hook.
An example from my Outline: All that Glitters is not Gold.
HOOK: A doctor is found brutally murdered in his home. Had his secret life finally caught up with him?
Here is a fun exercise, this is what developed my confidence in writing Hooks that were under 100 words, I kept them between 50-80 words, leave out the "fluffy" words i.e. (such as, perhaps, as if, and so on), remember to include necessary verbiage, you are going straight to the point yet in most cases keeping it mysterious. Write a Hook that will leave your reader craving more and or curious about what happened next. Remember to study the genre you would like to write and what keeps you reading that same genre.
· Write 50-100 words Hook sentences of your favorite book or movie.
Another HOOK example: After a twister transports a lonely Kansas farm girl to a magical land, she sets out on a dangerous journey to find a wizard with the power to send her home. (logline by Brian A. Klems, found at http://blog.writersdigest.com/qq/What+Is+A+Logline.aspx)
What is a Book Blurb?
It is the brief information found on the back of the book in majority cases on the back cover of the book, it is short, yet informative information about what is in the book and or what to expect from the book and in some genres what you will gain as a reader from reading that book.
How do you write an effective blurb?
The first thing you must decipher is the genre in which your book is written which will then help with the blurb creation. (the next examples are fundamentally for fiction novels; however, you can use them accordingly). This is not a golden rule, but most writers tend to write genres in which they themselves are fond of reading so, half the work is done in the sense that you know what draws you into picking that delicious book read.
Exercise 1: Read as many blurbs as you can (mainly of the genre in which you write). Take notes of the ones that pull you in and take notes of the ones that leave you baffled ?
Here is an acronymic way to remember how to write an effective Book Blurb:
BAIT, you got it! Lure them in, wave a piece of juicy information from the book that does not give away the entire book but keeps their mental pallets wanting more! What is the book about?
LEAD, lead off with the setting/era of the book, then introduce the protagonist(s).
UNDER, four short paragraphs, try to keep your blurb under four paragraphs (all depending on book genre).
RISKS, what are the protagonist's risks and or challenges in this book? Depending on the book genre this part can serve as an awesome cliffhanger in the form of a question and or some sort of suspenseful line, in some genres as an awesome sauce of mystery...
BE CONCISE, keep it short, simple, and delicious! Period! You know deep down in your soul what draws you in as a reader…lean into that compass.
Exercise 2: Even though we are talking of book blurbs, try watching movie trailers to getting a little inspiration.
A Book Blurb is not:
· An entire book Summary.
· A book synopsis.
· Book information overload on one page!
· A deceptive form of false advertisement. Never promise the readers one thing on the blurb and then when they read the book there is zero connections to the book story and blurb…not a great way to start a readership audience.
A Book Blurb is:
· The actual events that occur in your book.
· A smart advertisement for the book.
