Grab your blue pencil and let´s draw the basics of several fish.
Let´s draw a Female fish. What are the features of a female and how can we enhance them and simplify them to create the illusion of gender on a fish? Find out here.
Using a known species of a fish, let´s draw another character
Here we will add features to a fish and make it a Captain. We will also draw a fish in profile
Here you will use the simple shape of a fish to draw an older character. What makes a character looks old? How can you use that for other character designs of yours? Let´s find out in this fun exercise.
Let´s challenge ourselves with drawing a Happy fish with an open mouth. We are going to draw the fish in the opposite direction which will help you free yourself to draw characters in different poses.
In this lecture you will learn about composition and how to start drawing a SeaWorld
Drawing an older fish, giving it Male features and a worried expression is a great exercise to practise drawing characters in a context. We will do that step by step in this lecture.
Now let´s draw a Kid fish. We are going to take the concept of the characters in "Finding Nemo" but we are going to draw a completely different fish. In that way you will learn to apply features of a male, younger character to everything else you want to draw.
Now we are going to refine the characters and prepare to paint the SeaWorld
Let´s challenge ourselves and using the knowledge we´ve learned in the previous lectures draw a crab character.
Let´s go further with the knowledge we´ve got and draw a Jellyfish character.
Here we will balance our composition and fill up the SeaWorld with another Female fish.
Using the same principles and the linework we´ve practiced earlier, we will design stones and sea grass for our SeaWorld.
Using watercolor we are going to start painting whatever it is on the background first. Here you will learn how to use watercolor to create those "happy accidents", how to lose your fear of coloring outside the lines, and free yourself to experiment.
We are going to paint another background element. In this lecture, you will also learn how to create a grey color with watercolors. Also, how to create volume by defining the light areas of the stones and adding a different shading where the shadows and the light bounces on the surface of those objects.
Here you will mix and try to find different shades of green for the Sea grass. You will learn how to use more and less water on your brush to convey the idea that something is in the foreground and something is in the background even if they have the same color and textures.
Here we are going to start adding the basic colors to our characters. You will learn about cold and warm colors and what effect they have on creating the illusion of depth. Also, how to use the white space of the paper to convey the volume and transparency of a material.
Here you will learn how to add elements to the characters on top of their basic colors. How to add shading with the same color to create the illusion that your characters are three-dimensional and how to add variation to their fins.
When everything is dry, let´s add facial features to our characters. The eyes are the windows to the soul, this applies also to cartoony characters. Here is where you will have to be more precise and careful with your brush. Learn how to hold your hand on the paper so you don´t spill. Learn more about different brush sizes and how much water you need to have on your pencil to paint clear, nice facial features.
Here we will continue adding details to our characters. Outlining with different colors, adding texture to their skin, and filling up with characteristics that enhance their personalities as cartoon characters.
Let´s add the final strokes, polish and finalize our painting. And let´s celebrate the creation of our first cartoony SeaWorld.
Do you find it hard to draw? Maybe that´s because you are starting by drawing too complex shapes. You wouldn´t start building a house from the roof and adding the ground plane last now would you?
There are simple guidelines for drawing, especially for drawing characters. The easier you find it, the more you stick to it and the better you will become at drawing even the most complex shapes.
What is simple to draw? Fish! They have no complex anatomy and no rules of balance and proportions. But learning to draw fishes as characters will open the magic door to drawing anything.
Character design, especially cartoony characters is all about giving something human features, emotions, and traits. In this class, we will go step by step in creating fun and interesting characters, fish characters.
Fishes come in all shapes and forms. And as an artist, you are free to change those and find other traits for fish that will better serve you to create the character you want.
This class is full of useful tips, it is easy and playful and you are going to learn not only how to draw and paint a SeaWorld but most of all, how to create different cartoon characters that you can use in your own design.
You will be able to apply those principles to any other character - human, animal, or fantasy.
