    Hot method: jaggery etc are melted on heat and powders are mixed into it.

    Cold Method: Jaggery erc is pounded several times to make it soft

    The rollable soft dough is then rolled into pills.

    Phalavarti, or Medicated Herbal Suppository is

    one of the examples of cold processed elongated pills.

    It is self-preserved and has a shelf life of one year.

    In better packaging, the shelf life may extend up to three years.

    While applied, it is smeared with Ghee or castor oil

    Lubricated Phalavari is inserted in the anus to induce purge.

    Phalavarti can be prepared of various lengths and thicknesses.

    8 MM thickness is suited to most of people.

    While inserted, it melts with the moisture and  temperature in the rectum and releases the contents slowly

    Various pills containing Guggul can be made with this method

    For example- Sinhanad Guggul for rheumatoid arthritis.


    Constipation may be very troublesome sometimes. In patients with heart disease, constipation may exhaust someone to such an extent that it may result in chest pain and immense discomfort that may result in hospitalization. Even for patients with piles, constipation may become troublesome and may result in bleeding. Phalavarti is a suppository intended to be used per anally to relieve constipation. It is to be used under the medical supervision of a qualified Ayurveda physician. This suppository usually relieves constipation within 30 to 60 minutes of per rectal administration. This suppository is comprised of Ayurvedic herbs like Madanphal, Pippali, Sarshap, Yavakshar, Kushtha, Vacha and jaggery. Dr. Pranit Ambulkar, MD, PhD (Ayurveda) demonstrates how the Phalavarti is prepared.

Preparing your own medicines is easy if you understand the basic procedures and in-process assessment tricks. There are four types of Rasa Medicines (Herbo- Mineral medicines) viz.
