The Periya Teermanam Adavu (Kita taka tari kita tom) is a key part of Bharatanatyam's pure dance, appearing in many Nritta pieces. Known for its complexity, it can be challenging to dance, teach, or pronounce. This course offers a step-by-step approach to help you befriend this Adavu, making it accessible and enjoyable.
Whether you're a dance educator seeking a structured teaching method, a dancer aiming to refine your movements, or a student who finds this Adavu intimidating, this course is for you. Though rooted in the Kalakshetra style, the techniques shared can be applied to any Bharatanatyam tradition.
Karuna Sagari, Founder Director of Bhakti Natya Niketan and a Kalakshetra alumna, developed the Organic Pedagogy method to help students learn Bharatanatyam naturally, like their mother tongue. With over 14 years of teaching experience across the globe, she noticed that the Teermanam Adavu poses challenges for dancers of all levels. In this course, Karuna simplifies the complexities of the Adavu by offering aesthetic choices that help dancers find what feels best in their body. With a focus on technique and comfort, this course aims to make the Teermanam Adavu more approachable and enjoyable.
This course, Learning and Owning Your Periya Teermanam, is divided into three sections. The first is an introduction, while the other two are designed as one-hour class sessions. Each chapter includes a workout routine, learning module, practice session, and Talam portion. The course uses a layered approach to help you progressively build your mastery of the Teermanam Adavu. It’s recommended to complete each chapter in one go and avoid breaks longer than four days to ensure steady progress. Revisit lessons to refine your technique and deepen your understanding of the Adavu.
In this lesson, you will learn key terms essential for mastering the Teermanam in Bharatanatyam. The term 'Teermanam' means certainty, reflecting the decisive conclusion of a rhythmic passage. We focus on the Periya Teermanam (Kita taka tari kita tom), commonly used at the end of Jathis and Korvais. Explore its rhythmic patterns and how they follow one of the five Yatis (rhythmic shapes). You’ll also revisit important concepts like Akshara (beats), Maatra (divisions), and Aavartana (a full Tala cycle) to understand how Teermanams fit into different Talams.
The Periya Teermanam Adavu is a challenging but essential part of Bharatanatyam, appearing in almost all choreographies. Its complexity lies in both the musical structure (kanakku) and the physical demands it places on the dancer, requiring dynamism and control. This video addresses common fears about the Teermanam Adavu by offering a methodical approach. You’ll engage in body conditioning, step-by-step breakdowns, practice routines, and techniques to develop body intelligence, helping you master this intricate Adavu with confidence. Learn how to not only execute the Teermanam but enjoy it as well!
In this chapter, Karuna Sagari introduces a focused workout routine and guides students through the foundational movements of the Periya Teermanam Adavu. The lesson emphasizes foundational elements like movements of the feet and the concept of the "stable hand," offering a unique approach to mastering this challenging Adavu. This chapter provides a comprehensive starting point for students to build strength, alignment, and understanding in their Bharatanatyam practice.
This 18-minute workout routine is designed to prepare Bharatanatyam dancers for practice, combining stretches, conditioning, and strengthening exercises. It includes a mix of upper and lower body stretches, hip thrusts, glute bridges, planks, squats, jumps, and arm strengthening to build flexibility, strength, and control. The session also emphasizes body awareness and alignment, essential for a dancer's technique. This routine will help dancers develop the physical foundation needed to perform the Periya Teermanam Adavu while ensuring overall body conditioning and readiness for practice. Perfect for dancers of all levels to enhance their strength and flexibility.
This video will take you through the first layer of the Periya Teermanam. As an Adavu, which is complex in design, it is essential to work at the basic foundation: the movements of the feet so that dancers can later seamlessly incorporate the torso and hand movements.
In the previous lesson, you would have learnt the guiding principles that govern the movement of the feet in the Periya Teermanam. This video will help you apply the lesson in practice laying the groundwork for integrating the rest of the body’s movements in subsequent layers.
In this session, Karuna introduces the concept of the "stable hand" as part of her Organic Pedagogy approach to learning the Teermanam. The stable hand provides grounding and balance to the dynamic movements of the Adavu, helping students cut through its complexity with greater clarity and control.
In the previous lesson, you learned how the awareness of the stable hand can bring balance and grounding to your Teermanam Adavu. In this video, you will practice applying this awareness to your movements. Mastering this step is essential before progressing to the more expansive "dynamic hand" movement, which will be explored in the next chapter.
The rhythmic aspect of the Periya Teermanam may seem daunting for dancers because of its syllabic complexity and the sheer variety of usages. This lesson helps you to build a ground-up way of building your rhythmic understanding of the Periya Teermanam while honing your ability to pronounce the complex pronunciation of the "Kita taka tari kita tom". Using a metronome as a tool helps you have an external reference point to self-assess your grip on Talam.
In this video, Karuna wraps up the chapter’s content, encouraging students to revisit exercises and practice sessions as needed. While the workouts may cause mild soreness, they are designed for practicing Bharatanatyam students/dancers. Students are reminded to listen to their bodies and practice at their own pace for continued growth.
This chapter introduces the third layer of the Teermanam, referred to as the "free hand" in Karuna's Organic Pedagogy. It features a workout to prepare the body for this lesson and explores the Talam for the Teermanam at the Akshara level. Students will also enjoy "Happy Endings," a fun lesson analyzing iconic Teermanams from the Margam.
This video provides a tailored workout routine for Bharatanatyam dancers, emphasizing flexibility, strength, and conditioning. The session features targeted stretches to improve upper and lower body mobility, core strengthening exercises for enhanced stability, and conditioning drills to boost endurance and dynamic control. This well-rounded routine ensures dancers are optimally prepared for both practice and performance.
In this session, Karuna introduces the concept of the 'Free' or 'Dynamic' hand, which lends the Periya Teermanam its grand and imposing quality. This lesson focuses on an intermediate approach to mastering the flow of the ‘dynamic hand,’ providing students with the necessary steps to confidently integrate it into their practice of the Periya Teermanam.
This practice session focuses on refining and honing the key takeaways from the previous lesson. Students are encouraged to repeat this session multiple times to build confidence before moving to the next lesson. The two dancers in the video demonstrate different aesthetic approaches commonly practiced, allowing students to choose the one that aligns with their preferred style for practicing and executing the Periya Teermanam.
This lesson builds on the previous Talam session, guiding students in rendering "Kita taka tari kita tom" within a chosen rhythmic cycle. The use of a metronome provides an external reference point to self-assess your grip on Talam. By understanding how the three speeds fit into a rhythmic cycle, such as Rupaka Talam, students will gain the flexibility to apply this knowledge to other Talams based on composition requirements.
This lesson introduces an approach to simplify and master complex Teermanams in Bharatanatyam. Challenging Teermanams, often intimidating due to their rhythmic intricacy or speed, are broken down to make them more accessible. The "Happy Endings" concept ensures that these difficult combinations become not only manageable but also enjoyable, empowering dancers to execute them with confidence and ease.
This final session summarizes the course, highlighting key aspects such as body conditioning, step-by-step guidance to simplify the Teermanam, and practice routines to help internalize learning.
