HIGHLIGHTS
Layout is a software which comes with Sketchup
It will help us to make presentations using our Skp files
Both programs are linked so any change in our Skp file will be updated in real time in our Layout file
HIGHLIGHTS
To prepare our Skp file to Layout we have to work with the scenes
We will create in Layout a window linked with our Skp file. We can change the view from Layout too
We can play with the viewports in many diferent ways: moving, copying, resize, etc...
HIGHLIGHTS
If we want to change the size of our paper once the file is lready created, we should go to file_document setup
We will find in document setup the external references too
We can change the units from here too
HIGHLIGHTS
I recomend you to create a layer called: dimensions and labels and place it on the top
Layers in Layout work as in Photoshop, Indesign, etc... Not as in Sketchup
Layout snaps the points of our Skp file
I recomend you to model in Skp and draw the dimensions in Layout. We have many more options
HIGHLIGHTS
Labels work in a similar way as dimensions in Layout
When we label a component we can use the name of the component automatically
Labels are very easy to use in Layout and they will improve our presentations
HIGHLIGHTS
We can see our Skp model in three different modes: vector, raster and hybrid
We can play with the thickness and resolution of the lines here
Vector mode is good for representing lines
Raster mode is good for images and textures
Hybrid is the combination of both of them and usually the best option
HIGHLIGHTS
We can change the thickness of the lines drawing new lines in Layout in a top layer
We can do the same with the fill
We need to use the drawing tools of Layout
HIGHLIGHTS
For creating a clipping mask we should draw a closed shape and use righ bottom and clipping mask option. Pay attention to select as well the viewport
Everything inside the shape will be visible and everything out the shape will be mask off
HIGHLIGHTS
You can write down text in two different ways: 1)just click and text in a line 2)click and drag. After creating the box you can write down
You will find a tray called Scrapbooks with many different libraries available as : trees, people, cars, north symbols, etc...
You can download more scrapbooks libraries from the internet
HIGHLIGHTS
You can draw master items using the layer created by default called: on every page
Go to File_New_Titleblocks in order to use titleblocks. One new document will be opened. Select the titleblock and copy it to your document
HIGHLIGHTS
If I select the viewport of Layout and I click right buttom I will find these different options among others: 1)open with Skp 2)update model reference 3)relink model reference
1) Open with Skp will allow us to open our Skp file from here
2)Update model reference will update our Layout document with the last changes saved in our Skp file
3)Relink model reference will allow us to relink our Layour document with another Skp file
To a better workflow you can go to File_Document setup_external references then select the Skp file and choose between Update or Relink
HIGHLIGHTS
If we want to export our Layout document we should go over File_Export. Then you will find three options:
- Images. PNG or JPG
- Dwg/Dxf

SketchUp is a powerful, flexible, affordable, easy to use 3D modeling software.
My goal is to enable you to effortlessly take your ideas and bring them to life in 3D. SketchUp is the best tool for communicating and visualizing ideas, because its simplicity encourages creativity. The tool doesn’t get in the way of the creative process.
If you’ve never used CAD or any other 3D modeling program, you are at an advantage because you will not have habits ingrained from other software. You’ll be able to learn the fundamentals quickly, and you’ll be encouraged by the quick progress you are making. Don’t be intimidated if you’ve tried other complicated CAD software, only to become overwhelmed. SketchUp is one of the easiest 3D modeling programs to get started with, and I will help you learn the basics.
LAYOUT COURSE
We will learn a new software attached with Sketchup. Layout is connected in real time with Sketchup and will allow us to make professional presentations of our 3D model.
In this LAYOUT course we will start from an initiation level to end up mastering the program at an expert level. We will learn all the LAYOUT tools such as: dimensions, labels, clipping mask, hybrid mode, scrapbooks, etc...
My Background
My first experience with Sketchup was during the last years of my architecture degree in Madrid. I was in my last year and I decided to use the program to represent my project in a three-dimensional way. I started self-taught, but even so, the program completely seduced me and I enjoyed making my 3D model . The truth is that I would have liked to know this powerful tool from the first year of my degree and not in the last. Accustomed to using Autocad, Sketchup was a breath of fresh air. I began to enjoy graphic representation. That is why for all those university students I think it is the perfect tool.
After the degree, I started working in different architecture studios in Lujbljana, Slovenia. Always in charge of the 3D representation of the different projects and their rendering. In this way I began to specialize in the use of Sketchup at a professional level. A program that seemed simple turned out to be more and more complex and powerful while maintaining that fresh air. That intuitive ability.
In this way, the next step consisted of working as a teacher in different creative schools. In this way I began to carry out a study program. I gradually polished this program over the years learning from the difficulties my students encountered.
And here came the pandemic. At that moment, I decided to transform my face-to-face course into an online course. In a constant learning process thanks to keeping professional collaborations open, this course tries to synthesize all that knowledge accumulated over the last ten years in a professional and rigorous way, but also honoring the spirit of Sketchup, and proposing a way to learn fun and enjoyable.
You should know that you will have my guidance during the course.
Thank you for enrolling in This LAYOUT course!
Best regards,
