Kara spent time volunteering with the Cara Program while she lived in Chicago and was blown away with the program design, leadership, the students, and the impact on individual lives.
This is an overview of Discover Self Phase. This course specifically covers Module 5 - Showcase Your BEST You - Resume & LinkedIn. The full curriculum is available in the course titled: "The Art of the Job Search".
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
Your resume is your opportunity to showcase your BEST stuff to recruiters and hiring mangers. Yet, most resumes have one of these issues: 1) Poor formatting 2) Lacking accomplishments 3) Reads like a job description.
Your LinkedIn profile focuses on your BEST highlights from your resume.
Learn how to REALLY stand out with your resume and LinkedIn ...
Day 1:
Watch this 5 minute video (note: this module is part of the larger curriculum. Previous modules are mentioned in this video yet they are not required to complete this course).
Day 1:
Watch the 13 minute video
Day 1: Pull as much language that you can find that helps describe what you currently do in your work. You will find this language in post job descriptions in your field (doesn't matter the location), and you will find this language in 'people similar to you' on LinkedIn. Leverage technology to your advantage and borrow wording from people who do similar work as you do currently. This should be a draft brainstorm exercise in your 'draft resume' version.
Day 2-4:
Update your resume into a new draft version, this should be a draft with edits, inputs, ideas based on the video lesson. Share your draft resume with a friend, trusted co-worker, or mentor. Review feedback, and complete edits to finalize resume.
Day 5: Watch video
Day 6-7: Make updates and changes directly in your LinkedIn profile based on tips. Decide if you want to notify connections or not (its easy to turn off notifications while you are making updates to profile - see in video how to).
