This is your opportunity to share something about yourself with the rest of the students in this course. Tell us all about your goals and what you want to achieve. You can come back to this board and add more thoughts as you go through the course and achieve your goals. Seeing all the other students in the course will also motivate you and keep you going as you participate in this community of learning.
In this course, there are 5 main sections, one for each day of your podcast launch sequence. Each section has lessons and actions and you will get the most value if you go through the section and complete its actions in each day of your 5 day journey to becoming a podcaster.
You can go through it faster or skip sections if you need to – each section covers specific aspects of setting up your podcast plus you also might need to come back again in future if you need a refresher. But the course works best if go through it from start to finish and make sure you cover everything properly. I also only teach you exactly what you need to know to get your first 3 episodes done and live, with sufficient promotion to ensure you get some listeners.
In this overview lesson I teach you the key steps you will take on each day as you work through this course. This lesson will give you the "big picture" of whats coming so that you understand before getting into the detail of each day's lessons and actions.
On day 1 you will jump right in, set up your anchor.fm account and design your podcast. This includes the name and description of your podcast as well as the graphical logo. Plus you will jot down some key goals of your podcast and learn about the options for formats and frequency. You’ll also commit to selected friends and family that you will get this done, which also guarantees you’ll get some initial listeners
Day 2: You will script out your intro, trailer episode as well as your first two episodes. Don’t worry these are quite short so it won’t be too much work but it’s important that you do script it out so you launch your podcast in the best possible way. You will also start promoting your podcast with your existing audience to build up awareness and anticipation for launching your podcast.
Day 3: You will record your intro, your trailer and your first 2 episodes. You will launch your trailer and the first 2 episodes all together on the first day that your podcast goes live and you will add your intro to all your future podcast episodes so its important that we do this as well as possible.
Day 4: You will upload your trailer and first 2 episodes into anchor.fm and schedule them to go-live on Day 5. You will also firm up your plans for the following episodes and continue doing promotion and marketing for your new podcast
Day 5: Your first 3 episodes go live and you can use the links to these episodes in your ongoing marketing and promotion. On this day you officially become a podcaster and it’s really a thrill to search on spotify, find your launch episodes and listen in. on this day you will also finalise and implement your plans for keeping your podcast going so that you can look forward to taking it to the next level.
In this demonstration lesson you will see how Anchor.FM hosts and publishes a podcast with the performance metrics and scheduled episodes. I show you I set up my own podcast, I explain why I set it up and how it fits into my overall brand called The Student Success Coach. You will also see the public site you get for your own podcast and how it will be published to podcast platforms like Breaker, Google and Spotify. This lesson shows you exactly how it all works to give you some context before diving in to set up yours in the course.
Throughout this course we will celebrate your progress at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. I really want you to succeed but you need to take action and keep going so look forward to these milestones of progress. I will see you there and cheer you on as you keep going from one milestone to the next >>
Day 1 – I’m excited to kick off this journey with you as you take action to set up your very own podcast! If you stick to the schedule and work through the checklists then you will be launching your first episodes in 5 days time.
Today you are going to set up your podcast on anchor.fm. Anchor is by far the easiest podcast hosting platform and they have really made it easy so you can focus on creating an awesome show
There’s a demo lesson where I walk you through the website, starting from scratch when you sign up for the first time.
In this lesson you are going to learn about establishing some goals for your podcast as well as how to burn your boats so that you stick to your 5 day launch plan. You will be sending some messages out to your friends, family and audience to let them know that you are launching a podcast.
Both of these aspects are really important as they will establish your podcast on the right foundation and make sure that you get some initial listeners.
In this lesson you will learn about different formats and frequencies for podcasts, you will need to think about this and have an initial plan that you try and stick to
Podcast episodes can have different formats. There’s always at least one host, which would be yourself, but then you might be interviewing different people or you might have a regular co host and you have conversations with this person about different topics in each episode.
Or its just you, talking about something in the episode – this is best the format to launch and introduce your podcast but it might not be the format you want to stick with
In this demo lesson I show you exactly how to set up your podcast hosting account in Anchor.fm. You will learn how to set up cover art as well as a title and a description that suitable describes your show and attracts listeners. I walk you through the Anchor.fm website so you can learn exactly how its all laid out.
Throughout this course we will celebrate your progress at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. I really want you to succeed but you need to take action and keep going so look forward to these milestones of progress. I will see you there and cheer you on as you keep going from one milestone to the next >>
Day 2 is all about scripting or at least writing some talking points for your first 3 episodes which will just feature yourself for now. Future episodes will possibly be in other formats that you learnt about in another lesson. So please get your mindset right that you shouldn’t just sit down and record without some idea of what you are going to day. You have to record tomorrow, so you will use to day to prepare for that as much as possible
A common feature of popular podcasts is an intro. Typically this is a high energy sound byte from the host of the podcast which gives listeners a quick idea of what the show is all about.
It’s a short but clear intro to the overall podcast as well as gives listeners some info about the show, especially if they haven’t listened to any previous episodes.
An intro is definitely optional for your first three episodes but you must have it for future episodes. If you have time today you should also script your intro so that you can record it with your first few episodes tomorrow.
Its day 3 and it’s a really exciting day because you will actually record your episodes and your intro. Podcast is all about audio content so its awesome to get to this point and actually get going with recording
This is where your scripts or talking points will come in very useful because once you sit in front of a mic and start recording your voice, you realise you could be taking to tens or hundreds or even thousands of people – the more prepared you are, the more confident you will be and that will make for good audio
Now you don’t need any special recording equipment, you can literally use the built in microphone of your computer or laptop. However, eventually it is worth getting a decent microphone to improve audio quality.
In this demo lesson I show you how to record a very simple solo-episode from inside Anchor. You can literally press record and start talking - as long as you have some talking points or possibly a script. You'll see the different features of making a podcast episode so you know exactly what to do when you record your first episode!
In this lesson we will talk about finishing and scheduling your episodes and also planning future episodes
You’ve already done your channel art work and this will be the same for each episode. Unlike a youtube video you don’t load a new thumbnail for each episode. What is important is your title and description and this is what you will be adding to these new episodes that you have recorded and uploaded into your podcast.
Make sure each episode title is catchy and captures the essence of what people will get by listening to it. Look at the titles of other podcasts that you listen to and see how well the title links with the actual episode. Your description can be more detailed but it should also be clear and concise – people probably won’t read much past the first few sentences so try and summarise everything up front.
In this demo lesson I show you how to add a title and description to your episodes. It's so easy in Anchor FM and once you have been through this lesson you will have the confidence to do it yourself.
Throughout this course we will celebrate your progress at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. I really want you to succeed but you need to take action and keep going so look forward to these milestones of progress. I will see you there and cheer you on as you keep going from one milestone to the next >>
It’s a real thrill to find your podcast and listen to your episodes and now you can share the links to these episodes with your audience. If you did all three in one go then you will realise the importance of this because you’ve promoted your podcast and now people are finding it but it would be a pity if there was just one episode and nothing else
At least it looks like you are established as a podcaster and you’ve given people some options in choosing what they want to listen to.
I show you how I promoted the launch of my podcast in our Facebook group. I used a 10 day countdown with scheduled Facebook posts for each day to build anticipation for the launch day of 1st Jan 2021. Social media promotion will be an important part of your strategy for taking your podcast to the next level and a Facebook group or engaged audience on any platform will make your podcast sustainable and ensure you have regular feedback, listeners and even a source of suitable interviewees.
