In this video, we going to look at how to download schematics diagrams and which software to use to read them. There are 2 methods to download schematics diagrams:-
1. Using Motherboard number.
2. Using Laptop Model number.
Schematics diagrams are in PDF format which means you will need a pdf reader software to open them, there are many pdf readers out there, however, in this video I show you how to download and use Sumatra pdf reader when reading schematics diagrams.
Laptop motherboard board views are software files that help you identify where different components are positioned on the motherboard. These files can easily be downloaded from the internet with a simple motherboard number or laptop model number search. Laptop board views are in a unique format which requires different software to open them, there are many boardview opening softwares out there however in this video I go through 2 popular boardview software's;- 1
Open Boardview
Boardviewer
These are free software programs and they can be downloaded from their websites
Motherboards are designed like puzzles they have messages hidden in codes, these codes could be small writings or shaped marks written on top of motherboards. Understanding the meaning of these codes in very beneficial in reading laptop schematics diagrams.
In this lesson, we go through the meaning of the most common motherboard codes.
Different components on the motherboard have different ratings, Their rating are usually written on the motherboard, for example, protection fuse and crystal oscillators, Understanding how to interpret these writings is a great way to understand how to read schematics diagrams.
Laptop motherboards have clues and guides on everything, these marks help us when we are disassembling laptops, they help us to determine the size of screws, they guide us on how to replace components on motherboards, and also enable us to troubleshoot & diagnose BGA chips on motherboards.
In this lesson, we go through all of the above codes and there meaning.
Motherboard components have special identifications, these IDs help us to search for components in schematics diagrams. Integrated circuits or ICs have 3 names, one written on top of the chip, another written on the motherboard and the third is usually its function like charging or backlight chip. These names help us search for these components in the schematics.
In this lesson, we go take a look at how to trace motherboard components in schematics diagrams using component IDs.
Resistors and Capacitors and the most popular components on the motherboard, they perform many functions. Understanding the appearance 0f these components both on the motherboard and schematics is a very great way to read schematics diagrams.
In this lesson, we take a look at these component symbols and values in the schematics
Diodes, Transistors, and MOSFETs are one the most critical components on laptop Motherboards. It's easier to fix them if you can identify their schematics symbols.
In this Lesson, we look at their schematic symbols and values.
Inductors or coils are foundation block for all step-down voltage power supplies on laptop motherboards, they are used in filtering data lines understanding their schematic symbols is a great way to fix motherboard power issues.
Crystal oscillators, on the other hand, are like silent heroes in motherboards, they set the frequency at which all components on the motherboard operate.
The processor is the central processing unit of a laptop, it controls everything on the motherboard. In this lesson, I take you through how to search and read processor sections and symbols in schematic diagrams. If you want to discover how the processor works to the smallest detail, all that knowledge and information is hidden in the schematics diagrams.
Ram memory does many things on the motherboard, in simple terms I personally take RAM as an assistant to the processor, without RAM processor will do nothing. Fault RAM has many signs, the most common is no display, blue screen issues, and slow processing. Understanding how RAM is represented in the schematics diagram is very vital knowledge when fixing laptops.
Ground is the common point where every negative part of the component is connected, in other words, ground is referred to as negative. As electrons flow out from the positive part of the charger and throughout the motherboard, it has to come back to the charger through ground and then to the negative.
In this video, we take a look at how ground is represented in the schematics diagram.
An embedded controller(EC) or KBC is a component that handles a lot of tasks on instructions from the processor through Chipset, this chain of command is a great way to know how motherboards work. The KBC handles the keyboard, touch pad, battery charging, power button, and many more. In this video, we going to see how KBC is represented in schematics diagrams.
Communications and voltage travel on the motherboard through copper-plated lines known as rails, these rails move from one component to another. These rails are represented in the schematics diagrams.
In this lesson, we take a look at how Motherboard connectors are represented in the schematics diagrams.
Schematics Diagrams have a page called Block Diagram, The block diagram shows how different components are connected on the motherboard but mainly how they are connected to the CPU. It shows what parts are connected to the processor like RAM and Graphics Card, It also represents components connected to the Chipset, KBC and Bios.
When reading schematics diagrams, it's good to know which page to find the information you are looking for or basically which information is presented on each page.
Each page is given a specific section, audio or sound information is on one page, and USB ports and all other departments are given specific pages. The processor is given 20 pages because it's a broad component with many integrated circuits.
This second part of the lesson takes a look at more schematics pages, 3.3V and 5V sections, Ram voltages ICs, chipset power pages, LCD connects, and many other schematics pages.
Schematics diagrams have a lot of information and in order to prevent congestion, most of the information is displayed in codes, symbols, and abbreviations. This means for anyone to effectively understand schematics you should be able to interpret the meaning of these codes.
All laptops that use Intel chipsets and processors have common schematic symbols and codes, this means you can find the same codes in all laptop brands including MacBooks, HP, Dell, Asus, Acer, and Lenovo. These codes are many and not easy to remember for the first time, that's why I created a searchable pdf document that explains the full form of these codes, their meaning, and their function on the motherboard.
Laptop Power UP Sequence is the diagram in schematics that shows how the laptop turns on step by step from the moment you plug in the charger to the moment you press the power button up to when the laptop displays on the screen.
This diagram is very useful when you are fixing laptops that do not turn on or turn on and off plus those that turn on without the display on the screen.

In this part 2 we take a look at the voltages that come up after you press the power button, this process changes from letters to numbers on the power up diagram in schematics.
When you are reading schematics diagrams, it's had to tell where the voltage comes first and where it goes next which makes it difficult to determine whether one component is fine or faulty. In this video, I demonstrate how voltage flow is represented in the schematics diagrams.
I would like to congratulate you if you have gone through all this course up to this far, these have been over 23 videos plus 3 hours, congratulation again. Now as we go to the last part of this chapter I want to summarize what we have been learning all along practically. I recorded this video a while ago, it's an HP ProBook 4540s the customer gave to me to fix with no power issue. In this video, I demonstrated very well how to use the schematics diagram and trace the motherboard to find the problem.
After this video, I believe you will see the power of learning schematics diagrams and why companies keep them so confidential. Although we have come to the end of this course, our next courses are going to be very interesting because we are going to be looking at how different sections of motherboard work and how to fix them. We shall also look at how to troubleshoot and fix specific issues like no power, no display, no light, and many others.
Enjoy and don't forget to leave a positive review
