C6 - the 6th color tone added:
CM7 - the 7th color tone added
CM9 - C Major 9
The 9th Color Tone Added
C6/9 - 2 Color Tones added: 6 & 9
F6 - Adding the 6th color tone - D
FM7 - the 7th color tone added - E
FM9 - 2 tones are added - E + G
F6/9 - 2 color tones: D + G
Step 1: Reharmonize C & F Chords with color chords
Level 1: C & F Chords are played with triad chords
Level 2: Play C & F Chords with color chords:
For Example:
There are 4 possibilities for C Chords:
1. C6
2. CM7
3. CM9
4. C6/9
How would you notate this on the Lyrics with Chord Chart?
Homework:
1. Download the "Lyrics with Chord Chart" (on your RH 2nd download tab)
2. Write out the possibilities of the color chords that you can play in place of plain C & F Chord
**Try to do this before you peek at the answer in the next lecture**
The thinking process will help you absorb the material better and faster! :)
As you can see, there are 4 possibilites of color chords that you can put in for each C Chord & F Chord.
Piano Tip: Once you realize these 4 possibilities, you don't need to crack your brain to see how to harmonize the plain C chord. You can use all these 4 possibilites to bring your piano playing to the next level.
**All you are working with are plain triad chords**
**Just add in the 4 possibilities of color tones**
**Play around with these tones and see which one you like**
Please download the pdf & play around the different possbilities.
For those of you who do not play by ear, you can download the leadsheet and follow along.

Play the first line C Chord with these 4 color tones:
1. C6
2. CM7
3. CM9
4. C6/9
You can use any of these chords.
They all sound good.
It's a matter of personal preference as to what sounds you like.
This is how you have your own style with your own sounds.
I personally like C6/9
Play the first line F Chord with these 4 color tones to the 1st line of Away In A Manger:
1. F6
2. FM7
3. FM9
4. F6/9
You can use any of these chords.
They all sound good.
It's a matter of personal preference as to what sounds you like.
This is how you have your own style with your own sounds.
Adding Color Tones:
The reason why I put so many different color chords on top of the basic chords in the above diagram is to show you that you can choose any of these chords. Experiment and see which sounds you like better.
For C, you can reharmonize the C Chord by substituting any of these 4 color chords: CM7, C6, CM9 or C6/9.
For F, you can reharmonize the F Chord by substituting any of these 4 color chords: FM7, F6, FM9 or F6/9.
Music Smorgasbord:
Now that we have stepped into Level 2 of Reharmonization, there are many chord options for you to choose. It’s like eating in a smorgasbord restaurant. Eat what you like. Reharmonization has to do with Chord Substitutions at different levels and you have lots of options to choose the sounds you like. Choose the substitution chords that you like to hear.
There are no right or wrong answers as to which chord options you decide to choose. It’s a matter of personal taste and style.
However, there are certain harmonization rules you need to learn, so that you know how to apply them easily to your songs. This is what this Reharmonization course is about.
Reharmonization is not difficult to learn.
Learn to FOCUS on the important issues at each level.
In this situation, can you see how beautiful the RH moves from the B chord tone of G7 to the A chord tone of G9.
Listen to the beautiful sounds the color chords create!
This Handshape is called 4T6
4 = 4 tones
T = Tones
6 = 6th Handshape
If you put your RH into the 6th Handshape, then your thumb, index finger + 3rd or Ring finger will fall into place to give you the color tones, while the pinkie plays the melody note.
Later on in the Piano Technique section, I will give more instructions for you to play around with this 4T6 Handshape.
The Value of this Handshape:
1. Great for people with small hands and cannot stretch out to an octave in the RH
2. You splash in color tones easily w/o doing any calculation
3. You automatically embellish the RH melody with color harmonizing tones
Use it!
It takes piano students years to play those 4 note chord with inversions, but you are going to get this magic handshape working for you so that you can just splash them in w/o practice! How neat this is!
Piano Tip 2: Get color tones with 1 whole step or 1/2 step movement
1. 6th tone: 1 whole step above tone 5
2. 9th tone: 1 whole step above tone 1 or tone 8
3. 7th tone: for major chords -- 1/2 step below tone 1
4. 7th tone: for dominant chords - 1 whole step below tone 1
Memorize these easy Piano Tips.
They come in very useful and handy "at the moment" when you play.
2T6 - 2 Tone 6th Handshape
3T6 - 3 Tone 6th Handshape
4T6 - 4 Tone 6th Handshape
Let's apply the 4T6 Handshape to Away In A Manger
I go through the song chord by chord with you to show you the color tones that you are getting.
Tip: When you play, you don't need to analyze at all.
The Handshape automatically gives you the color tones.
I analyze with you so that you know how good this handshape is!
Just Play Along with the 4T6 Handshape and all those color tones will be there!
No need to analyze!
No need to calculate!
Just enjoy the sound!
