Dead by Daylight is an online asymmetrical multiplayer horror game. It is a 1 vs 4 game where one player assumes the role of Killer and the other four play as Survivors. The role of the killer is to hunt and sacrifice Survivors on hooks to appease an evil force called the Entity. Survivors must avoid being caught and work together repairing generators to power up exit gates that allow them to escape the match.
This extremely popular game was first released for Windows in 2016. It is available on many platforms including PlayStation, XBox, Switch, Stadia, and Steam Deck. This game has attracted more than 60 million players and is currently developing film adaptations.
Kazan Yamaoka is the "Oni." He hunts by injuring survivors, which leaves a trail of Blood Orbs. The Oni can drink the blood to send himself into a state of fury. This will unleash a fearsome roar and give the Oni the ability to charge at great distances and instantly down even healthy survivors that cross his path.
His strength is also his weakness. He can be countered by smart survivors, who avoid getting hit. These survivors avoid injuries by pre-dropping pallets instead of taking hits. They also focus on healing to avoid giving the Oni power.
As a result of his power, the Oni can travel great distances very quickly in a straight line. Like a crocodile, he also has poor rotational mobility. When dodging the Oni, smart survivors can move in circles around the same object forcing the Oni to crash into surfaces.
The Oni has many add-ons that help him use his power or control his energy. Smart survivors know to avoid him when he is in power because games can quickly spiral out of control at any moment when the Oni is charged.
Herman Carter is the "Doctor" who kills. This killer uses madness as a weapon. He is able to drive Survivors insane after zapping them with Shock Therapy.
His power is called Carter's Spark. It can incapacitate Survivors and cause them to hallucinate. The survivors scream and reveal their position.
He can use his ability, Static Blast, to locate survivors so long as they are not hiding in closets. Over time, the madness in Survivors only increases. This causes it to become increasingly difficult for them to do other tasks, such as those needed to escape the trial. Generator repair and unhooking other survivors can become impossible.
Evan MacMillan is the Trapper. He applies pressure to the map by placing Bear Traps that survivors can step into. If the survivor is caught in the trap, they may become injured or even downed.
The Trapper's weapon of choice is the Cleaver. It looks like a mining weapon and can be used to hit survivors. At the beginning of the match, the Trapper will start with 2 Bear Traps equipped. An additional 8 Disarmed Bear Traps will also spawn at random locations throughout the map.
At the beginning of the match, a smart Trapper will begin to set his traps. He must anticipate successfully where the survivors will go to be effective. Proper trap placement is the difference between victory and defeat.
Rin Yamaoka is the Spirit. As a Killer, she is fierce. While using her Yamaoka's Haunting Power, she is hidden to the survivors. They also cannot see her. Survivors are revealed to the killer by their Scratch Marks, breathing, and interactions with the environment. This killer must guess where the survivors are using her senses. She can move very quickly across the map. If she guesses correctly, the Survivors will be in big trouble.
Michael Myers is The Shape. The Shape can hide in the shadows and look at a great distance while biding his time he gains power. His evil builds as he stalks survivors. The more he stalks, the stronger he becomes. He walks faster, vaults faster, and becomes more lethal.
His special ability is called, Evil Within. The tiered Power requires The Shape to stalk survivors and drain evil from their shared pool in order to tier up. When he reaches Evil Within I, he has an Undetectable Status Effect. His movement speed slows, and his lunge reach open time is shortened.
When he reaches Evil Within II, he reduces his Terror Radius to 16 meters. He has an increase in movement speed to the default of 4.6 m/s. His Lunge Attack reach has an increased default open time. It reduces the time it takes for him to vault Windows to 1.48 seconds.
When he reaches Evil Within III, all survivors suffer from the Exposed Status Effect. His Terror Radius is increased to the default radius of 32 meters. The reach of his Lunge Attack is increased by extending the duration of its open time to 0.6 seconds. The time it takes for him to vault Windows is further reduced to 1.275 seconds.
The Shape has a special ability called Stalking. When the survivor is visible within ~40 meters, the Shape can press and hold the Power button to stalk. Stalked Survivors are highlighted to The Shape. The color of their highlight indicates the amount of evil left to drain from them, ranging from white (full evil) to red (drained of evil). Stalking survivors fills the Power Guage. The closer The Shape is to a survivor, the more quickly the gauge fills. The Shape can only drain evil from one survivor at a time, prioritizing the closest survivor.
Sally Smithson is "The Nurse". Using her "Blink" ability, the Nurse can teleport across great distances in moments. She can predict and cut off Survivor routes. This makes her an extremely dangerous killer to face when put in the hands of an experienced killer.
Her blinks are known to cause fatigue. This can be used to the survivor's advantage. Experienced survivors know to stay out of her line of sight and to put obstacles between her and their path.
The Nurse has the ability to blink through obstacles and can quickly close gaps with her power. This makes her a favorite choice amongst top ranked Tournament Players. Her skill cap is considered high.
