★Others
☆About year number written in the Map
Numbers appeare on the Map are about year. These are not precise on purpose. They shows rough location of the time history for tasting space-time perception, not for exact memorization. Using this, for example, you can taste how long Samurai Period had continued around, whether that is long or short with comparison of the length with other Periods.
☆About the Volume number of the Japanese History Map
Each Volume has one-round history from "Long Ago" to the present age. Large number has more details, and less number has basic items. Volume one Map guides you base knowledge from anciant till now. In Volume Two, new informations are on the top of Volume One knowledge from old age till present.
he first step of the important beginning. There are only four Periods in Japanese history. For those who learned the shool type history like "no mistake even a tiny letter, and memorize more", this might be no appeal. However, this Map concept becomes base of following historical lecture, even though looks surprisingly simple.
Based on four Periods of the history spoken in the last lecture, I will start from the first Period called "Long Ago". When did this period start, and till when? This lecture makes it clear.
This lecture will make them clear that the four Periods, who are aristocrats, and who are Samurai warriors. Based on these, I will define the Imperial Court, furthermore, clarify the Aristocratic Period is equal to "the Imperial Court Period".
Following the last lecture, I define the Shogunate. Furthermore, I clarify that the Samurai Period is almost equal to the "Shogunate Period".
The latter half of this lecture is about Tokyo Period. I talk about what is the government.
Following the last lecture, story of politics continue. I make it clear that who is the captain of the Imperial Court, the Shogunate, and the government. Through this, I clarify the big structure of each organization. They will be the structure of Japanese history.
Developing from the talks of Volume One, "Long Ago" is divided into two eras by the characteristical technology in those days. "Aristocratic Period" is divided by the place of the Imperial Court.
Being similar to Aristocratic Period, Samurai Period is divided by the location of Shogunate. "Muromachi Shogunate" was substantially "Kyoto Shogunate" because the city of Muromachi is in Kyoto. It will be clear why "Azuchi-momoyama Shogunate" did'nt exist even though the era is in Samurai Period.
What will happen if we time travel to the era of "Meiji Restoration", and ask people there "do you know the word "Meiji Restoration ?".
In the field of history, there are many that names or from when to when are given after long time.
This lecture also talk about a movement for democratic rights; why, and how it was generated after 700 year Samurai Period. That led the Japanese goverment to have constitution.
Freedom and people's right movement led to the constitutional government, which Japan adopted from the West. Prepairation time was rather short, it was around 10 years. That accelerated Japanes industrial revolution.
Lecture continued how Japan was involved in the era of war, and joined in a member of Great Powers. The political system changed from democracy to militariy dictatorship in the depth of war era.
After WWⅡ, political thought totally changed from war win to world peace.
This is the opening of History Map Volume 3 raw material, which means without English translation. This Bonus Track aims at introducing you outer circle of Volume 2. Volume 3 will tell you more details than you have learnt.
The “History Map" will show you from rough structure of the history to specific details round by round, which is the opposite way of usual school learning from details to the end.
Find new face of Japan through historical background of Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara or Kamakura through Long ago, Noble and Samurai Period.
This course is for anyone who is tired of learning history through rote memorization. “Mapping Japanese History” will help you learn Japanese history through real understanding.
This method of learning has been taught since 2003 at my Tokyo-based school, Crea Academy. I would like you to join us in this "Trunk to Branches" approach to learning history. It shows you the main concept, the “Trunk”, first, then adds on the details, the “Branches”, as we repeatedly go ‘round and ‘round through the “map” of Japanese history.
I have a feeling your views may change, not only of Japan and its history, but also of the nature of learning itself and your relationship to it.
For this oversea version, my friend Amanda helped translate into English over years.
