Description

It is a method of naming organic chemical compounds as recommended by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Ideally, every possible organic compound should have a name from which an unambiguous structural formula can be created.

The necessity for such a systematic approach arose due to the sheer quantity of new discoveries of organic compounds which made the trivial nomenclature of organic compounds highly inconvenient.

However, the IUPAC nomenclature guidelines are not always followed by chemists since some compounds have very long and extremely tedious names as per the IUPAC nomenclature guidelines. These compounds are assigned more trivial names.

Course discusses the systematic nomenclature of organic functional groups like Alkane, Cycloalkane, Alkene, Alkyne, Alkenyne, Alkyl halides, Nitro-compounds, Ethers, Carboxylic acids, Acyl halides, Aldehydes, Nitriles, Ketones, Alcohols, Amines, Esters, Amides, Anhydrides, Benzene & substituted benzenes, Bicyclic & Spiro compounds etc.

Each lecture starts with the definition of functional group, analysis of IUPAC name for the functional group, application of learnt concepts on new examples, special case discussions etc.

This course suits the beginner in organic chemistry who have just learnt the chemical symbol of different elements,  basic definitions like molecules, compound, chemical bond, and sub-divisions of chemistry i.e. organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry.

Who this course is for:
