Italian Intermediate: B1-B2 | Complete Grammar + Listening

Ho insegnato Italiano per più di quattro anni - I taught Italian for over four years, developing a solid and grammar focused curriculum. The goal is to teach grammar, and help each learner to master the building blocks, in order to speak with a good understanding of what is happening.

This is my second Italian course, and it covers Intermediate Italian grammar: what is known as levels B1 and B2 in the European language framework. We will therefore skip quite a bit of the more basic stuff (covered in the previous course), and incorporate many new topics.

Ovviamente, inizierò a parlare un po' di Italiano, e diventerà sempre più facile capirmi! However, the course will be in English for the majority of the time, and it is important that you understand English in order to follow along!

GOAL: If you finish the course and practice along the way, by the end you will know all you need to know to reach fluency. I believe that the topics included cover everything you will need in a normal conversation -what is left is very advanced bits that you really don't need, unless you want to be proficient.

Level B1:

• Relative pronouns: usare che e quale

• How to use the subjunctive (congiuntivo), one of the most dreaded (interesting) topics!

• Conjugation of the subjunctive presente and imperfetto

• Active and passive forms

• Condizionale passato e passato remoto

• Imperativo (refresher) and imperativo negativo

Level B2:

• Conjugation of the subjunctive passato and trapassato

• If-clause (periodo ipotetico) of the three kinds

• How to make any tense into a passive

• Last indicative tenses: futuro anteriore, trapassato prossimo, trapassato remoto

• Concordanza dei tempi (consecutio): how to mix and match tenses correctly (hot stuff!)

What we will do in this course is to build on what you know, learn what is needed to be more than beginners, and start practicing. Mi sentirai parlare Italiano, leggeremo insieme, e creeremo un processo per continuare a migliorare: we will draw a path for you to keep improving after finishing the course. When you know all the topics in here, all you need to do is practice. A language is not in a book, it is in the real world!

PREREQUISITES

These topics you need to know already!

• Verb tenses: presente, passato prossimo, imperfetto, futuro, condizionale, infinito, gerundio

• Il congiuntivo (subjunctive) presente and passato. (We will speak of the other two tenses and expand on the subjunctive as a whole, but the basics should be clear already)

• How to conjugate a verb, including the most important irregular verbs. I recommend you be good at this!

• Vocabulary (∼1000 words)

• Clear understanding of Italian sentence structure

• Smart reading: ability to read and interpret a simple Italian text; that is, be comfortable understanding less than 100% of the words.

This course targets English speakers and it is entirely in English. However, I also speak Spanish and French, and reference them at specific points during the course so to help students who should know these languages.
