iPhone Photography Mastery Course

In this Fundamentals module, I want to teach you some of the most valuable information you’re going to learn about iPhone photography.

You’re going to learn how to open the camera app as fast as possible so that you never miss that special or important moment again, life moves so fast and you’re going to need to know how to keep up with your iPhone camera.

You’re going to learn how to take the sharpest and best photos possible by mastering your iPhones focus, exposure and shutter options and even how to hold your phone for the best results. And if you don’t know what some or any of those mean, don’t worry, it will all be explained in each tutorial video for that Fundamental.

Just like learning to drive a car, everything starts with fundamentals. Not the most glamorous of topics but, you’ll see that understanding and implementing these 3 key fundaments will dramatically enhance your photos, and reflect in the quality of photos you will take with your iPhone. Be sure to have these keys in mind when watching and implementing every lesson moving forward. They are called fundamentals for a reason and something so simple can make the world of difference, especially when looking to capture that one in a million moment before it passes.

Make sure you take the time to practice these techniques. The more aware of them you are the easier and FASTER you'll be able to open the iPhones Camera App.

Remember, the faster you can get the Camera App open, the easier it will be to capture that once in a lifetime moment. Don't miss that moment because you just weren't able to open the app fast.

Practice Practice Practice!

One of the most amazing things that I've always loved about iPhones are the accessories and the intuitive ways you can complete a task. When it comes to taking a picture with your iPhone there are a number of ways to be able to Release the Shutter. The benefit of these options is that we can match certain styles of photography with certain ways to take the photo. Landscape photogra­phy lends itself well to trying to limit the amount of camera shake to maximize picture sharpness, this means it would pair perfectly with a wireless remote. Understanding these options are the keys to the best iPhone photos possible.

Very few things affect the outcome of an image than the focus of that image. Focus not only leads the viewer of the image towards the main subject of that image (or helps them to "focus" on what you want them to) but it clarifies the story that you are trying to tell. The default auto focus on your iPhone is great but in our goal to take back control, understanding tapping to focus, AF Focus lock and pinch to zoom focus lock is key. Some very dramatic and beautiful images can be done using this technique so don't be afraid to experiment so that you can get it exactly the way you want to tell your story.

Along with Focus and Composition, Exposure is one of the 3 Key elements that make up every iPhone photograph. Your iPhone does a good job in auto expos­ing the scene it thinks that you want to take but we want to take control to take the image that we want to. This key hidden feature gives you the option to expose the image as you wish, and is one of the most easy to use features in your iPhone Camera's app. With just a tap and a slide you'll be able to take photos directly into the sun without a worry that your image may be over or under exposed again.

Technical iPhone Photography Module

Settings are one of those things that most people don’t find to be their favourite things to talk about, and for good reason, they are boring! As mundane as they may be they do have a rather large affect on the outcome of the images you take with your iPhone. Navigate to the Settings App on your iPhone, then scroll down to find the Camera App, click on that Camera App and you’ll see that it has a number of settings that can be changed. You can’t break anything and you never know, some settings that i don’t use, you may like. I can only give you my recommendations, don’t be afraid to experiment and see what works for you.

Burst mode is a hidden option built in to your iPhone that most people don't even know is there. Once discovered and mastered it can be an invaluable tool that makes you never miss that important moment again. It’s not a setting or even a mode, it’s a swipe of the finger while depressing the shutter button that allows you to take up to 10 photos a second. Sporting events, kids ad even images of a pet can be tricky at the best of times but this iPhone feature can take your Action Photography to the next level instantly.

HDR means High Dynamic Range. What that means is that the iPhone has the ability to deliver an image where the bright (overexposed) parts of the image and the Dark (underexposed) parts of the image are all Properly exposed in the final resulting image. This is done by the iPhone taking 2 very quick images, One is taken by lowering the overexposed parts, another is taken by raising the underexposed parts and then the iPhone “Processes” those 2 images and combines them into 1 properly exposed image. Its a rather amazing option that is built right into your iPhone. Experiment and see what you can accomplish.

One of the most stunning styles of iPhone photography is Panoramic, commonly referred to as “Pano”. It has the ability to take multiple photos as you rotate your phone across a scene, stitch them together in real time and give you an absolutely jaw dropping result if done correctly. The iPhone walks you through the process but there are some key things to keep in mind when taking a Pano.

You can stop at any time when moving across the shot so theres no need to have a full 180 degree field of view. Anything that you think is beautiful and wont fit in the regular photo view is a perfect fit to take a Pano with.

Live mode photography is one of my favourite styles, if for no other reason that the options that exist after you've taken the photo. Not only do you have the normal editing options in editing, you also have a few Hidden Gems in this photo mode. Live mode essentially creates a “mini movie” that is 4 seconds long, 2 seconds before the shutter is pushed and 2 seconds after, that allows you to pick the “key frame” of moment of that movie that you want to be the photo. Just an amazing technique that allows you to pic that exact moment when your subject is exactly the way you want them to be.

It still blows my mind that the iPhone is capable of this. Fixed aperture lenses on a phone shouldn't be able to accomplish this “Pro Gear” look. Luckily the iPhone has software that allows it to mimic the look with some added bonuses up its sleeve. Not only can yo adjust the depth of field of the image while taking it, you can also do it after while you are editing it. And just for kicks the phone also allows you to simulate different lighting effects while capturing the moment to make it exactly as you've envisioned. This has been a sought after feature by professionals for years and still doesn't exist in our studio gear. Thank you iPhone!

Creative iPhone Photography Module

Some photos you take are going to be of your family and friends, pets and let’s be honest, what you’re eating for dinner at that restaurant. There’s nothing wrong with that, the memories we create are important and should never be minimized. But theres something about a photo that tells a story, something that evokes an emotion in you while you’re taking it will, in most cases, evoke that same emotion in someone else viewing it. Thats the goal with Stories, to have people feel something, wonder something, take a moment and appreciate the mystery and meaning in your photo.

When it comes to your photos telling stories, nothing works better than adding some mystery, and to that, nothing evokes more mystery than a silhouette. the human mind is a wonderful and powerful thing and we can play on that mind by removing something it is so used to seeing, detail! when the detail of an image is removed by getting rid of all the light facing a subject, the brain goes into automatic overdrive trying to figure out what should be there. That is the mystery we rely on when telling these kind of stories with our iPhone photography. Silhouette photography isn’t a mode, it’s a talent and a skill.

This tutorial will help you see things in a different light, reflections are all around us, in water, glass, and anything else reflective. An entire industry of filters and equipment has been created to try to get rid of reflections, so why not do something a little different to stand out from the norm and embrace these reflections for creative purposes. After rain has stopped there are so many puddles that can offer so options. Again, there is no “reflection” setting on your iPhone, so make sure to follow these key steps to get the perfect creative reflection shot that will wow everyone that sees it.

Shadows are one of those things that it’s rare to not see on any given day. They follow us wherever we go and are often taken for granted. They can be beautiful pieces of Creative art when made the subject by following this simple recipe. Like a number of tutorials there is no Shadow Mode on your iPhone, but, it does have some features that can dramatically increase the quality and beauty of these unique images. Whether is a shadow of a person , a building, a vehicle or anything that catches your eye, the formula remains the same but your creativity and eye for detail is what really make it stand out.

Commonly Requested iPhone Photography Techniques

We’ve all driven by a field we just love seeing, or a building that just stands out and catches our eye, a tree that look different than the rest or even a cliff side or mountain range. Landscape Photography comes in so many shapes and sizes and there’s only a few “rules” to stick to for optimal results. This style, along with one other, are the styles that I would highly recommend investing in extra equipment to make your experience better and your images more sharp and epic. Not every landscape photo is required to be epic, and just like photography in general, it’s always to taste and what fits and suits your eye.

Night time photography is one of the most sought after styles when it comes to social media and prints. Yes you can print photos from your phone, they are that high quality. In the tutorial I equated night time photography to baking because a recipe is needed for best results. You'll need some dramatic lights, some dark skies, a calm to no breeze (to avoid camera shake) a tripod and a trigger of some kind. Again, we are talking about best possible results, not just results. I like to incorporate a building or subject thats been lit up in some way as it really adds to the drama and contrast I am looking for.
