In reflexology, the foot is divided into five zones.
Zone 1 - Big toe
Zone 2 - Second toe
Zone 3 - Middle toe
Zone 4 - Fourth toe
Zone 5 - Baby toe
The big toe is also divided into 5 zones with zone 1 being closest to the edge of the medial side of the toe, while zone 5 is on the lateral side of the big toe.
This chapter is the theory of reflexology. We will cover:
1. What is reflexology
2. What foot reflexology therapists DO NOT do
3. Introduction to the founders of reflexology in North America
4. Pressure
5. What a healing environment should look like
6. Factors affecting tenderness
7. Possible cleansing responses to a treatment
8. Understanding the healing crisis
Before diving into relaxation techniques, you must ensure you are prepared.
The client should be comfortably relaxed in a chair. The only thing that needs to be removed are socks.
- Baby wipes or a warm cloth can be used to wipe the feet
- You will need two hand towels to wrap the feet
- Cornstarch can be used if your hands or their feet are sticky.
Be sure there is support under the recipient's knees and their head is comfortable with a pillow. A blanket can be offered.
When sitting, you should be able to use a chair that slides under the recipients' feet so that your elbows are at a 90-degree angle when working. You may need to use pillows or a different chair to ensure you are comfortable for the session.
These are the relaxation techniques to be used during the session
This is the sequence for the method:
Gentle Sweep
Five Zone Pressure Point
Snow Plow
Side To Side Friction
Knuckle Roll
Plantar & Dorsal Stretch
Circumduction
Butterfly Stretch
Alternate Thumb Cross Overs
Spinal Twist
Relaxation ending to session: Solar Plexus Push
Energizing ending to session: Alternate Solar Plexus Push
Lightly holding the dorsal and plantar side of the foot, start at the ankle and rub both sides of the feet with gentle yet firm pressure sliding off the toes and repeating three times.
What Is Reflexology?
It's the study of reflexes. If you can imagine massage meets acupuncture without the needles or needing to press directly on tender and sore spots, with the only thing required being to take your socks off, that's what it's like to experience a foot session.
Reflexology can be done on the feet, hands, ears or face. In this mini-session, we will be using the feet.
This mini foot reflexology relaxation technique course has been created for people learning the basics to offer a quick 20-minute session focused on helping participants relax.
In the course, you will learn the following:
The History of Reflexology
Zones
Getting Prepared For The Session
Learning the Foot Reflexology Relaxation Techniques
I'm excited to share my knowledge and experience with you.
NOTE: This training is specifically for helping you do mini sessions for yourself, family or friends. It will not certify you as a professional foot reflexology therapist.
It is also important that recipients do not have any conditions that increased circulation could cause a problem such as a recent stroke or blood clots. It is recommended that people taking medication or have medical conditions check with their healthcare professional before having a reflexology relaxation session.
