Explore three key aspects of creating accurate portraits through vibrant colors and textures, mastering shadows and highlights in digital art, abstract art, and illustration.
Gather essential Fauvism portraiture supplies: cutting mat, watercolor paper (200 gsm) or canvas, acrylic paints, a No. 15 brush, palette knife, masking tape, water, and rags.
Explore abstract fauvism portraiture by painting a portrait with dramatic shadows in turquoise and vibrant skin tones, using a palette knife and a large brush for a loose, expressive result.
Learn to paint a second abstract Fauvist portrait with a three-to-four color palette. Apply masking tape and a palette knife to build bold shadows and highlights.
Embrace abstract portrait painting by starting without pencil drawings. Build a red and blue composition with turquoise and orange hues while focusing on values and facial features.
This course is designed for anyone who wants to expand their creativity and knowledge on abstract art or for anyone interested in learning portraiture in fauvism style from an artist with many years of experience in the fine art industry.
This course in intended for beginner to intermediate students, but even advanced students will learn something from this course.
In this course we will focus on how to work in acrylics by using 3 key techniques in creating a series of abstract portraits by using basic art materials and a limited pallet.
We will explore how to introduce shadows and highlights by using vibrant colors and textures and how to focus on the values of a reference image and how to apply it onto our painting. I will also show you some methods of getting your reference image onto your canvas or paper should you choose not to draw it yourself.
In this course we will not only learn the dynamics to abstract art but by the end of this course you would have created your own set of portraits, consisting of 3 different and unique portraits, yet still maintaining the style of fauvism to make them cohesive as a collection.
I look forward to painting with you soon! :)
