Here we block the landscape with colors for the three main areas of this picture ie. sky, middle ground, foreground.
Here we draw the sky which takes more of the space on the canvas. It is always a good idea to do a dramatic sky but in this example we are using a few colors to depict the clouds.
Here we draw the middle ground which is the far distant land in the middle. Notice that we make no representation of objects in that area just the visuals of a land mass that we often find when looking far. This makes it far easy to do the landscape with great effect.
This is the near scene that we draw and the method is simple we use sharp bolder colors close to the observer and softer colors that are far such as the horizon where it meets the far distant land.
Careful examination of the final drawing will help you to learn more from the drawing and doing better next time.
Watch this video if you want to see the whole painting process uninterrupted and to see more closely the controls on the app used such as the brush size, settings and the colors for getting tones.
Many people are fond of landscapes and it has been a firm favorite of the great masters who often painted this subject frequently. In this exercise I show you how easily you can produce a complete landscape painting with only your digital tablet. No need for messy brushes and setup, just your tablet, a stylus and a good dose of enthusiasm!
There are elements to landscape painting that make a good painting such as understanding tones and the warm and cool colors required to create a sense of perspective and distance. I try to explain this in the videos as you try to draw along with me.
