The module begins by navigating 'justice' as a unique and complex concept and explores its different nuanced facets. This lecture also provides participants with a foundational understanding of how justice is traditionally associated with formal justice systems and lays an introductory understanding of the need to challenge this understanding. It also provides learners an introductory understanding of the meaning and practice of alternative justice.
This module delves into the nuances of alternative justice, its history, and theories and situates its relevance in today's world.
This lecture's core focus is on the types of alternative justice such as restorative justice, transformative justice, community justice, and therapeutic justice with global case studies of each to understand the implementation of applying alternative justice practices in real life.
The lecture delves into the benefits, strengths, limitations and criticisms of alternative justice practices.
The module focuses on reclaiming accountability and explores the different strategies by which communities and individuals can take accountability for the safety of their community and access to justice. It also discusses the interrelationship between accountability, harm, and repair and unpacks the role of an apology in facilitating it.
The final module offers a recap and key learnings and takeaways for the learners.

The course "Introduction to Alternative Justice" is designed to comprehensively explore alternative justice [AJ] through real-life global and Indian examples, shedding light on community accountability and the practical implementation of alternative justice forms. It delves into the nuances of AJ, its history, and theories and situates its relevance in today's world. A core focus is on the types of AJ such as Restorative Justice, Transformative Justice, Community Justice, and Therapeutic Justice with global and Indian case studies of each to understand the implementation of applying AJ in real life. Further, the course delves into the limitations and criticisms of AJ, reclaiming accountability and addressing the differences between compensation and reparations. It discusses decolonized accountability, acknowledgment, and its linkages to AJ.
