This quick video covers a few points about the Course. I'll tell you how to make sure you get your Certificate of Completion, as well as things that may help you get a better experience.
This lesson discusses the importance of the Site Visit. Then we go into specifics about what we need to have gathered together. There's also information that hopefully can be gathered from calling the local water system.
There's a lot of things that should be discussed with the homeowner or property manager. These should include their current and future plans, timer location, water main and meter location, etc.
In this lesson, we'll go to the property, draw a rough map of the land and buildings. We'll also take measurements of the water pressure and flow if we weren't able to get that info in advance. I'll instruct you on all of the other information that we should annotate on our drawing.
We'll show you how to use your rough drawing and measurements and create a scale plan.
We'll discuss the use of symbols to represent the elements of the sprinkler system on our plan.
This lesson will go over the step of selecting the appropriate sprinkler heads and where to place them on the property plan.
Pt 2 of Select Sprinklers and Add to Plan
In this lesson, we'll figure out the Dynamic Pressure and Flow, also known as Working Pressure and Available Water. We'll be gathering some data and entering it into a chart. don't be put off or intimidated by this step, it's actually easier than it looks.
Now that we've determined the max flow available to the system, and selected the sprinkler heads for the system, it's time to decide what the zones will be. We'll use the micro-climates that we observed on the Site Visit to group sprinklers together into "zones."
In this lesson, you'll learn the basic method of Pipe Sizing. With this method, you can select the proper size of pipe for each section of the zone.
In this lesson you'll learn the advanced method of Pipe Sizing, known as The Friction Factor Method.
We're going to discuss a method of designing an irrigation system that's a little less technical than Pipe Sizing. The method involves using one size of pipe throughout the system, sized to the Available Flow.
In this short lesson, I'll go over the final bits of info and detail that we need to finish up the Plan.
I'll give you some steps and details to prepare for before you show up with equipment and parts. You'll also learn about 811, the service to scan for underground utility lines.
We'll touch on the two installation methods, open trench and vibratory plow. I'll discuss the differences in the methods as well as safety concerns for operating the equipment.
In this short lesson, I'll give you my recommendations for the steps to assemble the sprinkler system.
We'll discuss 5 different ways that you can use to bore under driveways and sidewalks.
You'll learn the logical steps of installing the heads after assembling the system and flushing it out.
The last lesson of this course is about the last steps of the installation process, and my recommendations for cleaning up the property.
This online video course is about installing irrigation / sprinkler systems for residential and light commercial properties. Beginners can take this course with some basic knowledge of irrigation systems. We suggest that you have already taken our courses:
Introduction to Irrigation and Sprinkler Systems
Irrigation Piping Systems
All About Sprinkler Heads
Be sure to download the 30 page Study Guide and set of Friction Loss Charts by Hunter Ind. from the link in the first lesson. We recommend that you follow along in real time with our System Planning Exercises. You'll gain so much confidence by having gone through the process in this course.
The course is in English and uses the Imperial Measurement System (inches, feet, pounds.) We hope to provide lessons in Metric and Spanish at some point in the future. For now, download Hunter's Friction Loss Charts PDF that has a conversion chart for Metric / Imperial.
Some things you'll learn:
* How to sketch a property at the initial site visit
* What information to gather at the site visit
* How to manually draw a scale plan on graph paper
* Calculate the total friction loss for the system
* Determine the dynamic pressure and available water
* How to select sprinklers for the system and where to place them
* How to group the sprinklers together into zones
* Plot the layout of the pipes and wiring
* Three different ways of determining the size of the pipes
* Two different methods of installing pipes
* Five ways of boring under driveways and sidewalks
* The process of flushing the system and installing the heads
Who should take this course?
Landscaping and Lawn Care professionals wanting to expand their service offerings and make more money.
Beginners in the irrigation / sprinkler business wanting a comprehensive, real-world education.
DIY homeowners, gardeners, etc.
