This course explores the key forces and industries that underpinned this era of dramatic change, providing learners with insights into both the drivers of industrialisation and its far-reaching impacts.

The course aims to address some of the less well-known aspects of the industrial revoluation. We begin by examining the banking system, which financed trade, infrastructure, and industrial growth, before turning to the East India Company, a powerful trading enterprise that linked Britain to global markets and supplied vital resources. The course then considers the factory system, where technological innovation and mechanisation revolutionised production, altering work patterns and social structures.

The arrival of the railway age is analysed as a catalyst for mobility, commerce, and urbanisation, while the age of iron highlights the technological advances that fuelled construction, engineering, and transport. Case studies of the tobacco lords illustrate the fortunes built on global trade, wealth accumulation, and colonial connections, while the whaling industry demonstrates how natural resources were exploited to power lighting, manufacturing, and maritime economies.

By the end of the course, participants will understand the interconnected economic, social, and technological elements that shaped the Industrial Revolution and laid the foundations for the modern industrial world.
