Beyond English: IELTS Academic Writing Task 1

The aim here is to show you how the examiner grades your writing. This includes a look at the Band Descriptions, the parts of your writing that they are looking at, and what exactly they are looking for.

In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, several different types of questions are possible. Here, we will have a quick look at the different types there are, we will discuss the tenses you should be using in your writing and we will give you tips on what you should be doing when you first look at your exam question.

Before we talk about actually writing an answer, this video will give you advice on the type of language you should be using to describe various types of information, in particular comparisons, trends and the use of nouns.

Here, we will continue from the last video but focus on numbers, and have a look at some words you can use to link your sentences and paragraphs.

In this video, line graph questions will be used to show you how to build the structure of your answer and keep it organised. We will look at the Introduction, Body and Conclusion individually and give you advice on how to form each section of your writing.

This is a continuation of the previous video.

Here, we will put to use what you have learnt about the structure of your writing, but with other types of visuals that contain numbers.

In the IELTS Academic exam, graphs and charts are not the only type of question you may encounter. This video looks at diagrams and processes, how you can divide the information into manageable paragraphs, and the language you can use to answer the question in an interesting and effective way.

There are two types of map question in the IELTS Academic Writing Task 1. This video will focus on the first type: Map Comparisons. We will discuss the types of words you can use to describe position and change, and talk about how to compare the size of something.

In this final video in the course, we have one last thing to discuss: Map Recommendations. Here, we will give an easy structure to use and some set phrases that can be learnt to make a recommendation in this type of question.
