About me
Hello and welcome to the most accessible hula hoop course. My name is Bianka and I am a hula hooper. I started 9 years ago after seeing a video of a hula hoop dancer. She was so elegant and beautiful and I knew I had to learn to move like that.
Ten years forward and I am still hooping, travelling the world with my hoops and creating friendships with hoopers across continents.
I decided to create this course to bring hula hoop closer to people and show you that it´s an accessible activity with big potential. Hula hoops brought a lot of joy to my life, I became more confident and in touch with my body and it has so many physical and mental health benefits as well. As a plus hooping is especially great for women to activate the feminine energy and to connect to your inner child. It will be an honor for me to share my love for hula hoops with you and inspire you to try something new.
Why hula hoop?
Hula hoop represents unity and connection. Circular movements can be meditative and many people use hooping as a form of movement therapy.
There are plenty of positive effects of hula hooping on physical health as well like burning calories, improved balance, posture and hand-eye coordination, improved flexibility and mobility or stronger and toned body.
Hooping can be your door to enter the flow state or alternate states of consciousness. Many people say hula hooping changed their life.
How to use this course and what you will learn?
There are different styles of hula hooping but in this course we will focus on hula hoop dance. You will learn beginner tricks which will give you a solid base to build on in the future. You can incorporate these tricks in your dance flow, combine them together and create sequences and routines.
First I will teach you how to choose the right hula hoop and how to warm up your body before starting any lesson. Next you will find 20 lessons with foundational hula hoop tricks and combinations.
The great thing about hooping is that you dont need a repertoire of crazy circus tricks to enter the flow state or feel the benefits of hooping. The simplest movements can be even better depending on what´s your goal with hula hooping. What I will teach you in this course are all basic tricks which are good to know but you can be creative and do it your way. We are all different and with time you will find your own style and flow.
In the last part you will find a few exercises or prompts to try. They are ideas inspired by other great teachers which helped me think outside the box and be more open to experimenting with movement. I am sharing them with you to help you in your flow journey.
That´s all from me. Last thing I want to say is have fun! Enjoy the movement, take time for yourself and listen to your body and your inner child. I wish you to find in hula hooping exactly what you are needing right now. Happy hooping!
In this lesson, I will explain the different hoop options (sizes, materials, tapes..) and how to choose the right hula hoop for this course.
In this lesson, you will learn simple exercises and stretches to warm up your body before any hula hooping session. It is important to warm up properly before training to prevent injuries.
Welcome to the first real hula hoop lesson where you will learn the basic move - waist hooping. Spinning the hoop on your waist can be tricky but with the right technique and practice everybody can learn it. Don't get discouraged if it doesn't work for you immediately. In the second half of the lesson, you can find examples of common mistakes, exercises to do, and tips on how to spice up your waist hooping.
In the second lesson, you will learn your first off-body trick called weave and its variations - forward, backward, and side weave. If you will feel it is too much information at once, you can split this lesson in three, take a break and come to the other parts later. Weaves can be tricky for your brain and the body needs time to create a muscle memory before the tricks become automatic.
In this lesson, I will teach you how to do a magic trick with your hula hoop. It is an optical illusion where the hoop seems to be floating in the air. If your hoop is a little bit heavy make sure to take breaks to rest your arms.
In this lesson you will learn to spin the hoop on your hands above your head, in front of you and also your first transition. Make sure to warm up before and have enough space where you can practice spinning the hoop.
In this lesson, you will learn vortex - a transition from on to off-body hooping. It´s better to use a bigger hoop for this one. Make sure to warm up before the lesson.
This lesson covers a trick called escalator and its variations. Don't forget to warm up your body before you start and make sure you have enough space to train in. If possible, I recommend practicing this trick in an open space with no breakable items around you.
Today you will learn three variations of a smear. Try them all and let me know which one is your favourite.
In this lesson, you will learn palm spin and hand spin. You will need a higher ceiling or an open space to train in. Hula hoop terminology can sometimes be confusing and one trick can have more than one name. The trick I referred to as hand spin is also called Z spin by some people.
This lesson covers two tricks - mandala and octopus. If you want you can split it in two lessons or watch it all at once to see the difference between the tricks.
First leg trick without using your hands! Be careful to not be too harsh with your hoop so it doesn't break.
There are many rolls you can do with your hoop. In this lesson I will teach you a chest roll. Warm up before starting, try not bending your back too much and take a break if you feel any pain. Be patient with yourself when learning :)
Finally, in the last lesson of this section you will find 4 super easy beginner tricks you can incorporate in your flow.
I decided to join 4 tricks in one combo. Don't worry, you already know most of the transitions. Just practice putting them all together.
Another combination made of 4 hula hoop tricks you learned in the previous section. Start with waist hooping, continue to lasso, passing and smear.
Are you ready for this fun combination? It consists of isolation, weave and mandala. Warm up and try it!
Let´s make it a little bit harder. In this lesson, you will learn a transition from wedgie to an escalator. You will be impressed by yourself when you nail it!
In this lesson, we will cover an impressive transition from palm spin or hand spin to a downward escalator.
Today you will learn an easy way to go from smear to escalator.
If you were wondering what you can do after a chest roll here is an idea for you. If you need, watch the previous tutorials and practice the single tricks before putting them together.
Congrats on completing the second section of the course! The last combination I chose for you is a transition from chest roll to mandala.
Welcome to the last part of the course. Here you will find a few exercises or prompts to try. They are ideas inspired by other great teachers which helped me think outside the box and be more open to experimenting with movement. I am sharing them with you to help you in your flow journey.
They are just examples and you should not copy exactly the same movements I am doing in the video. You can use it as an inspiration but try listening to your body and find your own style and flow.
Congratulations! You rock! By completing this course you gained all the foundational skills that you need to fully dive into your hula hoop adventures.
