Create HUD graphics from scratch using Illustrator and After Effects with a step-by-step workflow, assets, camera setup, 3D layers, and post effects, plus downloadable project files.
Sketch a thumbnail in Photoshop, using rough sketches from a sketchbook or paper, then build circles and cross hairs on a grid to plan a hud thumbnail concept.
Create circle assets in Illustrator using the ellipse tool and guides. Use a grid and brush patterns to build a reusable After Effects HUD library.
Create custom Illustrator brushes by forming circles and squares, turning them into art and pattern brushes. Snap to grid, adjust strokes, and duplicate layers to build UI-like brush assets.
Create HUD assets in Illustrator by using grid alignment, shapes with fill and stroke, moving points, expanding appearances to edit patterns, brushes, borders, building assets for After Effects.
Organize assets in Illustrator by placing each element on a separate layer, label them, and prepare for After Effects import, using shapes, brushes, arrows, borders, and patterns.
Import Illustrator assets into After Effects as a composition, set up a 1920x1080 main comp with a camera and depth of field, and build a precise grid.
Create the first look of a circle hud by adjusting the camera to an angled grid, applying color, glow, and blur, and moving layers in z space.
Swap in illustrator assets and lay out circles in after effects, adjusting scale and duplicating elements to build a layered hud design. Experiment with colors, positions, and blur to distinguish foreground and background while refining the composition.
Coordinate colors across layered circles and squares to refine the hud frame, then move, rotate, and zoom the camera, duplicate items, and test the composition to finalize in After Effects.
Learn to animate a circle in After Effects by pre-composing, converting Illustrator artwork to a shape layer, and using trim paths with eased keyframes.
Animate circles in after effects by creating and offsetting shape layers, applying keyframes, and easing to craft smooth hud circle animations.
Learn to animate circles in After Effects by creating shapes, applying 3D, offsetting frames for unique motion, adjusting keyframes with the graph editor, and refining speed without plugins.
Animate circles with trim paths, offset, and keyframes to create unique motions, swap shapes, and vary start and end points, while managing layers and performance.
Explore how to animate HUD graphics in After Effects by previewing with frame-rate adjustments, offsetting circle rotations, scaling, and building unique simultaneous animations from vector layers.
Animate hud elements in After Effects and Illustrator by creating shapes, applying keyframes, and refining timing with curves. Learn to swap assets, organize comps, and save to avoid losing work.
Apply hud graphics in After Effects by adjusting keyframes and opacity, using alt-drag to refine timing, duplicating controls, and organizing circles and squares for unique blink patterns.
Learn to add and animate type for HUD graphics in After Effects, choosing fonts, using type on presets, and randomizing character properties for unique, timed typography.
Add and style type in After Effects by changing color to orange and yellow, centering text on a circle, and adjusting character settings, while using a ruler and shortcuts.
Explore how to enhance HUD graphics in After Effects by using adjustment layers, color correction, noise, blur, gradient effects, and masking to craft depth and dynamic post effects.
Add a camera move in after effects to maximize 3-D layers, set keyframes for position and rotation around the point of interest, and render the sequence.
Add life to After Effects hud graphics by using depth from 3D layers and a camera move, then repeating elements, rotating layers, and keyframing blinking in a five-second render.
Summarizes the final five-second render and the Illustrator to After Effects workflow, using a 3D camera, blinks, and filters, with a homework to remake a five-second animation from unused assets.
What students are saying about this course:
“Great course for expanding your expertise in After Effects. Many great workflow tips.” - David Erickson, student
“Relaxed person to person way of explaining, so you understand it deeply..” - Peter Jensen, student
“I learn a lot by watching the instructor thought processes while she builds out the project. She not only shows what she is doing, she shows why she is doing something. Nice.” - Ira Camp, student
“Excellent, step by step but not tedious. And I learning to a point that I don't have to constantly go back and refernce.” - Kenneth Vanwright, student
“Awesome stuff.....best money I have spent here on Udemy. I am really learning so much about after effects through the project...and the repetition on the same hotkey behavior has helped me learn immensely. As someone that is learning animation I have learned more from this project based course than I have in many larger "all inclusive courses"...I will be taking every other course she offers.” - Jeremy Hazel, student
“This is awesome training!!!” - Daniel Martinez, student
“Clear and detailed explanation, many tricks and trips, I can't really imagine number of animation can I do by following this method, make me feel that I am designing like professional , or maybe I am already professional after this course. Very recommend” - Ahmed S Safwat, student
“High quality course offering many well explained tips and tricks applicable to Interface motion graphic animation and beyond! Recommended!” - Amanda Jessup
"The course is very good and easy to understand. Thank" - Kanawat, student
I remember when I wanted to create HUD graphics. I was lost. How do they get that kind of detail, those glows, how did they set up their shots?
After many years on the job, I learned some effective workflow tips to help me create this HUD animation relatively quickly, and now you can too. I’ll be covering a lot of important workflow concepts as well as tricks so that you can create this animation.
We'll start with a Thumbnail sketch and bring it into Illustrator to create our assets. Then we'll bring them into After Effects.
We'll take our Illustrator file into After Effects and convert the layers to 3D layers and animate them using shape layers. We'll comp these assets and create the text in After Effects. We'll apply effects and filters to create the final look.
At the end of the course, you'll have built up a library of assets that you can re-use in addition to creating this animation.
Also, throughout the course I will be supplying my working project files so that you can use them as a downloadable resource.
I want you to succeed. If you have any questions reach out to me in the Q&A section of the course. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have.
