Sometimes we chase after goals or dreams without really stepping back to think why. In this lecture "Why Do You Want a Record Deal" I challenge artists to think what is there end goal in mind.
Being Independent or Signed both have pros & cons. Getting signed to a record label is not a destination it's just part of the journey.
In this lecture you will have a better understanding of what record labels are looking for in an artist and how you can better position yourself to look more attractive to labels.
The sooner you can start understanding that most labels don't care about your music as much as they care about making money you will be in a much better position to negotiate and get a record deal.
The higher the advance the more skin in the game the label has. It's easier to assume the label believes in an artist by the amount of money they are willing to invest. However there are no guarantees in this industry but that is the benchmark I use. Money talks..
Traditional Record Deals are when the label is fully invested because they own the masters in most cases under that type of a deal.
360 Deals or 360 Record Deals are where labels take a percentage of every income stream that an artist has. For example: Touring, Merchandise plus digital album sales and publishing.
A Licensing Deal is when you license the master recording or album to a record label for period of time which could be anywhere from 2-7 years. You still own the masters but the label controls the master during that period of time.
A distribution deal is sometimes with a record label or directly with a distributor. This could be for just physical CD's or digital downloads and streaming of your music. Normally this leaves the artist in charge of all marketing and promotion.
It blows my mind to speak with artists that have signed record deals but when I ask them specific questions about a deal they stare at me with a blank look on their face... Know what your signing!
The term is the number of years the contract is in effect.
How much money the record label or distributor agrees to give you in advance of you releasing your album.
How many albums you've signed on to record with the record label. 2-5 is typical.

As the artist Manafest I've sold over 300,000 albums worldwide, over 1,000,000 singles and toured over 20 different countries.
I've signed & negotiated Record Deals with Major Labels such as EMI and Sony Music as well as many independent labels around the world.
Over the last 10 years I continued to play live shows, write songs and attending conferences improving and teaching my students everything I know in the music industry.
I'm tired of artists being broke. I have friends that have sold over 1,000,000 records but because they haven't setup their business correctly are forced to get a part time job driving for Uber.
I have put this course "How To Get a Record Deal" together for you - to which you have full lifetime access, including all the updates, for free.
