Hi. We are Keppie Coutts and Ben Romalis. We have studied and taught at some of the best contemporary music colleges in the world including Berklee College of Music, Sydney Conservatorium, the Australian College of the Arts, the Australian Institute of Music, the LA School of Songwriting and JMC Academy.
Our goal is to help people write better songs! Our belief, having worked with thousands of songwriters (many going on to find careers and success in music), is that your songwriting, like all things, can get better with meaningful and deliberate practice. Our intention is to share the skills, knowledge and ideas that we've had the privilege of gathering with others who embrace the art and craft of songwriting.
In this course we will take you through the songwriting process, step-by-step from start to finish. We'll guide you through two distinctly different processes - one that begins with a lyrical idea and one that begins with a melodic phrase. By the end of this course you'll have a set of professional tools and processes that can be applied to your own songwriting, regardless of which genres you write in.
In this chapter we take a look at Keppie's original song 'LAST CALL' and discuss how it all began with a small lyrical idea and a moment between friends.
Sense writing is a powerful tool used by professional songwriters around the world. Here we look at how sense writing can help you generate lyrical ideas and bring your song to life with vivid imagery and immersive language.
Finding the title is one of the most effective ways to bring clarity and purpose to the songwriting process, however finding the title is also about defining what your song is really about and in this chapter we discuss how to articulate the 'essence' of your song.
Song Maps are essentially essay plans for your songs - a powerful way to gain perspective as you plot a course for your musical journey. In this chapter we look at how you can create your own song map to help clarify where you want the story to go and improve your chances of finishing the song well.
Now that the initial preparation has been done, it's time to start bringing music and lyrics together. In this chapter Keppie shows us how she began crafting the verses of LAST CALL, drawing on language from her sense writing exercise and adapting chords from another composition.
Choosing a song form is a crucial step in the process and in this chapter Keppie shows us how and why she chose the AABA song form for LAST CALL.
In any AABA song the function of the B section or Bridge is to create contrast and in this chapter we look at some of the different ways contrast can be created.
Working through the song map we now arrive at the final section in our AABA form. In this chapter we look at how you can create a few surprises for your listeners with variations of the final A section.
Key takeaways and final reflections from the 'lyric first' process
'LAST CALL' - Written and Recorded by Keppie Coutts (available on Spotify and Apple Music)
We now turn our attention to another song and a different process - this time beginning with music first. As an example of this method we discuss how the song TIMEBOMB first came into existence.
The next step is taking our initial idea and developing it into something more substantial. In this chapter we look at how a small melodic statement can be expanded and developed into longer phrases and also how we can start bringing lyrics into the equation.
Finding a theme can help drive momentum towards the finish line and clarify the purpose of your song. In this chapter Benny talks about how he discovered the theme for TIIMEBOMB and used it to complete the song form.
'Just because you wrote it first, doesn't mean it's the first verse!'
In this chapter we examine a common pitfall for songwriters - finding the right order for their verses by experimenting with different verse ideas in different positions.
While Keppie's song LAST CALL was in AABA form, TIMEBOMB is written in the Verse-Chorus form. In this chapter we examine the differences between these two forms and how you might decide which one is the most appropriate vehicle for your song.
Writing great choruses is definitely one of the most important jobs for any songwriter and in this chapter we look at how you can create big, bold and dynamic chorus sections by utilising the principle of contrast.
As we continue through the Verse-Chorus form we arrive at one of the most problematic phases in any song - the halfway point. In this chapter we discuss how you can avoid getting stuck in 'second-verse hell' and keep your song moving forward.
The bridge is a very versatile section and in this chapter we look at how it can be used to not only create contrast but to also provide an 'energy boost' into the final chorus.
In any song form, we want to leave our listeners with a strong final impression and in this chapter we show you some practical ways to make your final chorus interesting, impactful and exciting for the audience.
Key takeaways and final reflections.
