Welcome to Lesson 1: "What is Acne?" In this lesson, I'll answer some basic questions about acne, such as what it is, where it can appear, how it develops, and why people get it. It's worth saying that acne is a very common skin disease, affecting 95% of teenagers and persisting until their late 30s. However, it can be managed and cleared with the right skincare and nutrition habits.
You are one step closer to understanding what's going on with your skin!
Identify your acne type with this video. Get ready to pinpoint the type of bump you have!
Explain acne treatments that reduce sebum, unclog pores, kill bacteria, and reduce inflammation with salicylic acid, retinoids, azelaic acid, and niacinamide.
For a long time, dermatologists and skincare experts have classified skin into four fundamental skin types: oily, dry, combination, and sensitive. However, in 2006, a young dermatologist stirred the world of skin and came up with a new classification with 16 skin types. A classification which considered the main obstacles to achieving healthy skin: dehydration, inflammation, pigmentation, and ageing.
Watch the video to learn the story and determine your skin type. In advance, I can tell you that if you are dealing with acne, you will definitely have sensitive skin, whether oily or dry, pigmented or non-pigmented, wrinkled or tight. That I will help you to asses.
I want to share my minimalistic skincare approach with you. It consists of a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Additionally, I recommend what I call a "2.0 skincare routine" for individuals over 30 or those who want to take a proactive approach in their 20s. This routine includes a cleanser, serum or treatment, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Watch until the end to customize your perfect skincare regimen.
I’ve got the perfect list for anyone struggling with acne-prone skin. It lists the best and worst ingredients in makeup and skincare. Next time you shop for skincare products, check out the labels and avoid any ingredients on the “worst” list. It’ll make your life so much easier!
I made two videos to share my makeup recommendations. The first video is about how I get my skin ready for the ´gram. It's super easy, and if you take good care of your skin, you don't need much makeup.
I start my skincare routine by cleansing and exfoliating my skin with a 10% glycolic acid cleanser. Next, I apply a vitamin C serum with a 10% concentration, sometimes followed by hyaluronic acid. I wear a barrier repair moisturiser because I have dry skin and live in a cold place. Later, I gently apply my foundation and concealers using a blender or brush. I add some blush and finish with a loose powder to control shine.
The second video is all about foundations that won't mess with your acne. If you're unsure whether your makeup is causing breakouts, switching to another brand is best. You could have acne cosmetica, which is when certain ingredients in your makeup clog your pores and cause tiny bumps or whiteheads on your face. You can treat it with salicylic acid, retinol, or adapalene while you find a better brand.
It is pretty common to experience acne breakouts on your body, which is why taking care of the skin on your body is as essential as taking care of your face. Some factors that trigger body and scalp acne are styling products, sweaty workouts, stress, hormones, body scrubs, loofahs, and brushes.
I propose a simple and uncomplicated skincare routine for body acne that you can easily follow. Happy watching!
How can I properly pop a pimple?
It's not recommended to pop pimples to get rid of them. However, if you're in a tight spot and your pimple has a visible white head, follow these steps to pop it.
1. Take a hot, steamy shower. This will do the trick if the pimple is about to pop.
If that doesn't work:
2. Wash your hands to eliminate dirt or bacteria, and wash your face with a salicylic acid cleanser. This will cleanse your pores, exfoliate your skin and reduce inflammation.
3. Extract the pimple. You can use a pimple extractor, which is available at most pharmacies, to remove the pimple. Before using it, clean the extractor with a cotton ball soaked in alcohol. To prevent the pus from spreading, apply the same amount of pressure around the pimple. If the pimple doesn't come out after a few tries, stop and try again later.
4. Use benzoyl peroxide, an antibiotic, or adapalene to keep the skin free of bacteria. This will aid the healing process.
Our skin is the largest organ in our body. It contains a complex ecosystem that hosts microbes such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. This ecosystem is called the skin microbiome.
These microorganisms live in harmony with our bodies and each other under normal conditions, and they play an essential role in maintaining the health of our skin. Picture them as a shield, protecting your skin.
Like the skin microbiome, the gut is home to a large ecosystem of bacteria known as the gut microbiota. A strong connection exists between the gut and the skin, known as the gut-skin axis. When the balance of these delicate ecosystems is broken, inflammation and diseases might appear.
Watch this video and think of a time when you felt sick to your stomach or blushed when nervous about giving a presentation. Our gut, brain, and skin are deeply interconnected.
Pro, pre- and post-biotics are everywhere nowadays. You have probably heard of them in the supermarket, as well as in supplements, beverages, skincare, and dog food. But do you know what they are? Let me explain.
Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast known for having health benefits in the gut and skin. In simple words, these are good bacteria you eat to be healthy.
Prebiotics are food ingredients that nourish the probiotics and the beneficial microorganisms in our body. This is the food of the good bacteria. If you don't feed them, they won't survive.
Postbiotics are all the beneficial molecules produced by probiotics.
How can they improve your skin?
Eating foods with pro-, pre-, and post-biotics can balance the gut microbiome, reduce inflammation, and improve acne.
Welcome to our lesson about nutrition!
I am not a certified nutritionist. However, I have researched bacteria and probiotics for many years, which has given me a solid understanding of their workings and importance in maintaining healthy skin and overall well-being.
The key to clear skin is nutrition! It doesn't matter if you're dealing with acne or other skin problems. After all, we are what we eat.
Over the past years, I have come up with a list of food recommendations for healthy skin and a healthy, long life. This is the list:
Eat the rainbow.
Consume fermented foods high in pro-, pre- and post-biotics.
Pick healthy fats.
Go complex low-GI carbs.
Limit dairy.
And this is another list of things to avoid:
Foods high in sugars.
Bad fats.
Smoking or vaping.
Drinking too much coffee or alcohol.
Whey protein.
Supplements of vitamins B6 and B12.
