Why should you start your own tutoring business?
There are many reasons why you should seriously consider becoming a tutor. Whether that's in person or online tutoring.
· You can work from home.
· You can choose the number of hours you want to work and when you want to work.
· If you are passionate about a subject but you do not want to work in a school.
· There is a high demand for one-to-one tuition and online tuition
· You are your own boss.
· The overheads for starting your own tuition business are very low, so you don’t need to invest a lot of money or buy expensive equipment.
#1 Myth: “I have to be qualified to teach my subject.”
The first myth that people believe is, you have to have a degree or a teaching qualification in your subject area before you can begin tutoring. That is completely untrue. I have coached a number of tutors who are high school and college students and they are running successful tutoring businesses. So, you do not have to be a qualified teacher or have any paid teaching experience to begin tutoring. You just need to know the curriculum content that you will be teaching, and I will tell you how to gain that knowledge a little later, don't worry. For example, I am a qualified English teacher however when I first began tutoring, I had to teach some English literature books that I had not studied myself, i.e. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. So, what I had to do was study the book myself before I could teach it but I found it enjoyable because it meant I was learning a new book and when I would teach the next student I would have even more experience under my belt.
#2 Myth: “Aren't there already too many tutors?”
The second myth is that there are too many tutors already and the market is saturated. I disagree as every person I have coached has been able to find students and some have a waiting list because they are in such high demand, they have to turn students away. I have successfully coached housewives, high school students, university students, and retired teachers, so that's quite a range of different people and all of them have found work as tutors.
If you are tutoring from home or teaching students in their own homes, there are very low overheads.
What Qualities Make a Good Private Tutor?
If you're considering becoming a private tutor, it's important to ask yourself if you have the personal qualities needed to work with students. Generally, tutors should be friendly and approachable yet maintain a professionalism that reassures students and parents that they're good at what they do.
Tutors usually offer their services directly from their own homes or they travel to student’s houses. In some cases, you might teach from a student's workplace or from a public place like a coffee shop or library. Working as a travelling tutor opens up your options in terms of the areas you can cover, and it often pays to have the flexibility of working this way.
The single biggest challenge that new businesses face is finding clients. As a private tutor, finding your first students can be tricky, especially if there are already other tutors operating in your area.
However, just because there are already other tutors out there, it doesn't mean that there's no room for you. In fact, if anything, it gives you an indication that there's a demand for tutoring in your area.
1. Word of mouth marketing – most tutors find students through word of mouth by building up a good reputation online, or in their local area.
2. Have leaflets printed and distributed in the streets surrounding your local schools.
3. Register with a tutoring agency – let them take care of finding students for you.
4. Register with tutoring directories. A good tutoring directory will appear high in search engine rankings, meaning students can find you online.
5. Keep an eye on online tutoring jobs boards – we have one on our website too, which is free for tutors to use.
6. Be active on social media - choose two or three sites that you’re familiar with and connect with people who may be interested in using your services.
7. Place an advertisement in your local paper, on a online tutoring site or a classified ads websites such as https://www.gumtree.com. To help you get started, download the sample tutoring advertisements document.
Hi, I'm Farhat
I believe that you can make a good living working from home...and still, have a life. That's why I teach creative people like you to work smarter.
See…I believe “status quo” is a curse word - especially when it means you’ve stopped living your life because you’re buried under work that’s running YOU.
I believe you don’t have to choose between work and family — you can have BOTH and do them WELL.
And you know what? This is a mom of 3 talking.
I should know.
After working really long hours as a teacher for over 5 years. I decided to leave my full-time job and start my own business (designing and printing stickers) from home. However, I have a passion for teaching, and I missed it, so I set up, my second business - a tutoring business. I tutor students one-to one as well as online tuition.
Over the past few years I have tutored over 50 students, helping them achieve amazing results. Here's my favourite testimonial (I had to include one!)
"From the first session, I felt more reassured after we went through my past papers to see how I could improve. I was set homework that would really help me to revise over the texts and to learn things that my class at school were not being taught. When it came to my exams, I felt confident as I had been taught to a high standard which improved my grade. I highly recommend Farhat to any student struggling in English."
