First of all, I would like to welcome you to our course and give you some very important information before we get started. It will only take a minute and it will help you a great deal to understand the structure of this course and who I actually am.
Lie detection is obviously not something you can master by just learning the theory. It needs practice. This is why in this video I want to challenge you to start your observation for the signs of deception. So far we have talked only about the basics of lie detection and we haven’t yet touched the more advanced stuff related to the particular body language signs of a liar. Because of this, it will be easier for you to concentrate more on your instincts rather than just the theory.
Now, the next time you are talking to someone, who is infamous for lying or bending the truth, start your observation. Engage in small talk. Talk about something simple, even silly, and observe how their body behaves. Then, move on to a different topic, something you know might make them feel uncomfortable and might force them to lie or be dishonest. Observe the changes in their behavior to confirm that they are in fact being deceitful.
If you complete this challenge, then the other students of this course and I will be extremely happy to hear about your endeavor. To share your story and your experience, simply post a discussion on the course dashboard and tell us about it. Thank you and see you in the next section.
Another interesting thing about people who lie is that very often they try to give you more information than necessary. They are literally trying to flood you with additional details, because they feel that this will make them more convincing.
Now, in this challenge I want to ask you to share a personal story or experience about a past situation. In the previous challenge I asked you to share an experience when YOU were being lied to and how YOU dealt with that experience. This time I want you to do the complete opposite. Tell us about a situation where YOU WERE THE LIAR. Of course, you don’t have to get into details about what you actually lied about. Simply tell us how you felt when you were lying. Were you calm or nervous? Were you constantly explaining yourself, giving way more information than necessary? And finally – did they believe you?
Once again, please, post a discussion and share your experience. And remember, we are all liars, so no one will judge you.
You have probably noticed that when people get really nervous, their skin color actually starts to change. They will often blush with a beautiful red color around the nose, cheeks, ears or neck. This is caused by a very sudden release of adrenaline, which increases the rate at which the heart beats and dilates the blood vessels.
You may assume that people who believe they have gotten away with
telling a lie may be very happy with themselves. Why wouldn’t they?
After all, they have achieved their goal, right? The truth, however, is
quite different.
The eye is regarded as the central focal point of the human body that will convey the way you truly feel and think. When you maintain eye contact during the conversation, you are perceived as being a strong, confident, honest and empathetic person. You evoke the feeling of respect and trust and others feel at ease in your company.
In this video we will discuss four head movements that can reveal a liar:
You may rightly believe that it may be very difficult to detect lies just based on a slight movement of the liar’s head. So, let me move on to a gesture that occurs more frequently and is easier to perceive. It is called Neck touching.
When men are being deceptive or realize that they have been caught lying red handed, they may try to ventilate themselves by pulling the collar away from the neck or loosening their tie.
When people feel nervous or vulnerable it is very common for them to create a physical shield separating them from you.
I’m afraid that this is the last challenge of this course. However, it is also the most important one. You are now equipped with not just the awareness of your instincts, but also with the knowledge of the body language of a liar. It is now time to put your new skills to the test.
Remember, observation is the key and it is the first thing you need to do ALWAYS. Then, of course, you have your instincts. Do not ignore them. Last, but not least, use your knowledge of body language to finally Spot a Liar.
Now, there is no due date for this challenge, lie detection is something you should practice and use on a daily basis. However, once again, we will be more than happy to hear about your experiences. If you have a story to share, then please come back to the course, even after you have completed it, and post a discussion. We will surely answer.
