Welcome to the course! I am happy you are here. Please note the exercise mentioned in the video "leaders and followers" has been changed to "Yeses and No's"
This is a great documentary done during the pandemic. Please watch this video ( 15 mins) with the intention of learning the work of nurses. Most of the issues in nursing ( short staffing, being unable to provide the standard of care you were trained to do, work life balance etc.) have been relevant for many years and will continue to be relevant for many years to come.
This documentary was filmed in an ICU, I can assure you nurses who provide direct bedside care ALL have faced these issues for many years.
The self-care inventory is a tool that addresses the different dimensions of self-care. It is a tool that gives insight into areas that may need improving. The clinic participants are instructed to bring it to the clinic. We will incorporate it later in an exercise with the horses.
This specific selfcare inventory is from the National Alliance on Mental Illness. It was originally adapted from the Child Welfare Training Toolkit. The original source is unknown.
There are many other selfcare inventories available, if you find one you prefer, please feel free to use it. I like this one as it gives you a direct visual as to which dimensions are high scoring and the dimensions that could use improvement.
Please see the link below to the Professional Quality of Life Inventory. It is free to use, there are lots of resources on the site.
I strongly encourage you to share this with nurses and other professional caregivers. It is a resource they can go back to time and time again.
I have the clinic participants fill it out online, the results are e-mailed to them and they bring them to the workshop. The results are discussed in the work shop and are incorporated into an exercise with the horses.
We cover the STOP technique, low impact de-briefing.
Nurses worldwide are experiencing underappreciation, poor job satisfaction, anger, burnout, poor work-life balance, physical and mental exhaustion, violence, and poor self-care. A 2020 Canadian study (pre Covid-19) showed:
63.2 % of nurses experience symptoms of burnout
33 % have contemplated suicide
23 % screened positive for PTSD
Nurses need to develop skills to manage these unique stressors. You and your horses can help nurses develop self-compassion, inspiration, connection, and support
Learn how to run a one-day equine-facilitated professional development program to support nurses. In this course, you will dive into the nursing profession and learn what nurses do, and how what they do impacts them. It's a lot more than bedpans and giving pills!
You will learn 7 practical tools nurses can start using their very next shift, all through the help of your horses.
Course content includes detailed interactive exercises with horses, reflective questions, a complete course syllabus, and detailed exercises. You can use it as is or adapt it to your current program. Topics covered include present-moment awareness, care and connection, and boundaries.
Easily integrate this educational experience into your existing program, no matter your EFL training. This is a great program for those just starting in equine-facilitated learning.
Just as horses are worldwide, so are nurses. Nurses are an impressive group to work with. Nurses are traditionally under-supported in the Equine Facilitated Learning/ Wellness/Therapy world. We need to change this!
This course also works well with those in the helping professions such as occupational therapists, social workers, physiotherapists, nursing assistants, respiratory therapists, and anyone else in the helping professions.
Please note this is not a "Certification" course in equine facilitated learning.
