How to Read Data from a Modbus RS485 Temperature Sensor
What you'll learn
- Analyze Modbus device documentation
- Analyze RS485 serial communications documentation
- Make RS485 serial communications connections
- Use software tools to test/verify Modbus register addresses and values
- Understand the address offset issue experienced with some Modbus masters
- Create a Human Machine Interface to display Modbus data in a user-friendly format
Requirements
- Basic working knowledge of the Modbus RTU protocol.
- Familiarity with the installation of software applications on the Windows OS platform.
Description
This course as created as a result of requests of students who wanted to have a single example of a Modbus-enabled RS485 device being taken "out of the box" and the steps taken to connect the device onto a Modbus RS485 network where it's data values could be read and displayed.
The course uses a Temperature / Humidity sensor that has Modbus RS485 capability, as the device to be connected to the Modbus network. The documentation associated with the device is analyzed and is then used to configure Modbus master test software, where register addresses are confirmed.
The device is connected to a PC via a USB-to-RS485 converter.
After verification of data register addresses, a Human Machine Interface (HMI) application is created using an application called Winlog Lite. The HMI application is then used to read the data values from the Modbus device and display those values in a user-friendly format.
The course is extremely practical and steps he student through the complete process in a very systematic and logical manner. As the software tools are all free trials, the student will be able to download the applications and practice further.

Instructor
I have been working in the fields of Software Development, Software Systems Integration and Process Automation since 1996. In 2003, I stepped out on my own and started working for myself providing software development and systems integration services to small and medium businesses.
I am also associated with a great company called Mora Systems Limited that under the leadership of it's Managing Director has produced innovative and outstanding products and services in the fields of GIS and Cellular based SCADA.
Teaching has always been a passion for me. I have taught at the tertiary level for many years on the subjects of programming, control systems as well as systems integration. In the last few years I found myself incorporating more and more videos into the curriculum with amazing results.
When I heard of uDemy I just could not help but sign up. With teaching in a classroom, you can reach only so many students, but with uDemy you can reach the world! I plan to publish and promote as many courses as I possibly can on the uDemy platform.
