Ten top tips for starting your own small business

    1. Get some experience

When planning to start a business, volunteering is the best way to gain some experience in that business. Look for as many opportunities as possible to walk dogs! Not only will this tell you whether this activity is something you enjoy enough to spend much of your time doing, but it will also allow you to observe how dogs interact with one another & the environment. It will teach you how to handle dogs of different shapes, sizes, ages & temperaments. I'd recommend volunteering to walk dogs for your local rehoming charity.

    2.  Learn some business skills

You must register as self-employed to set up and manage your dog-walking business. Then, you will open a business bank account, keep proper financial records, manage your accounts, and complete tax returns.

    3. Do some market research.

Find out if there is a demand for dog walking in your area. Some of this can be done by simple observation, but you should also consider holding a focus group or posting a questionnaire. SurveyMonkey is a free online questionnaire tool that I found useful in conducting market research before starting up.

    4. Get insured

Getting fully insured is a must, not only for the sake of your clients but also for your protection. Dog walking insurance is fairly specialized, and only a handful of companies provide it.

    5. Show that you are trustworthy

To gain prospective clients' trust, you need to be open & honest with them right from the start. Applying for a Disclosure Scotland (or Police Check) Certificate costs very little, & making your CV  available is helpful.

    6. Show that you are committed

Whilst attending animal behaviour courses & obtaining relevant qualifications might prove both expensive & time-consuming.  It is better to consider doing some small things to show you are committed to a career working with animals.

    7. Provide safe transport

You needn't invest in a custom-fitted van just yet! Consider making do with what you have available, at least to start with. For example, a hatchback or station wagon/estate car can be converted into a safe vehicle for transporting dogs. You can leave the dogs in by simply folding the rear passenger seats. Then, installing a standard dog guard behind the front seats & covering the whole rear area with non-slip, easy-clean material.

    8. Create a website

A professional-looking, easy-to-navigate, informative & search engine optimized website can be the cornerstone of your business. These websites can be set up easily & with really very little money. If you get it right, your website will be your best tool for promoting your business. Your website will become an online shop window, accessible to customers worldwide. Which means the better it looks and the more up-to-date it is, the better impression it will make on consumers

Many of your customers, your website will be their first impression of your business. Your website gives your customers an idea of what the business is about, who it is for, and who runs it. You wouldn't go to a business meeting without looking your best, and your website should be the same.

    9. Advertise cheaply

Take advantage of free online advertising & list your new dog walking business on as many sites as possible, including targeted locations such as forums frequented by dog owners & local business directories. Buy a large pack of cheap business cards from somewhere like Vistaprint, or even print off your posters at home. Distribute them at the local vets, the pet shop, the newsagent, the park noticeboard, anywhere you think potential clients might frequent. Being creative with your advertising means you don't need to spend a fortune. I screen-printed some clothing with my business details & wore these whenever I was in public.

    10. Stand out from the crowd

Ensure there is something about your service that sets you apart from your competition.  These include your discount rates, last-minute availability, the area you cover,  flexible hours, and the unique locations. If you make one or more of these things remarkable, you should be able to gain. Your first client. Good luck!    If you want to grow your business you need for marketing and advertising; we will see how that can do. When we become serious about improving our business, getting to know the ins and outs of marketing is essential. Therefore, I will give below in detail about marketing and advertising

Marketing vs advertising - differences and definitions

Marketing and advertising are commonly confused. This confusion is complex because the meanings of both continue to change.

Below are definitions of marketing, followed by definitions of advertising, and the differences between marketing and advertising.

Firstly, it's important to note that the increasingly broad nature of marketing definitions reflects the increasing size by which organizations engage with their markets. It is truly fascinating and highly significant to see how the definitions of marketing have changed over time.

Marketing was traditionally 'selling products' (as if at a traditional old-style farmer's market). The term derives from this meaning, which developed so that marketing became an extension of selling. It is a means of identifying, designing, and communicating or' targeting' offerings to customers.

Nowadays, however, we know that customers decide to buy many products/services by referring to many more and wider factors.  Previously, product/service features, quality, availability, and price were simply features.

Nowadays, the meaning of marketing is highly sophisticated. A good modern definition of marketing must acknowledge that we buy things in far more complex ways.  But we didn’t use the complex ways fifty years ago, even ten years ago. The internet and social media are significant factors in this. Above all, marketing reflects 'the market', and how the market buys and behaves. Which mainly entails people and society, much broader considerations than purely product and price. As the market evolves in sophistication, so does how we understand it now. The sophistication gives an awareness of what marketing is and what it means to conduct marketing well.

Here are three examples of how the scope and definition of marketing reach much further  than ever before:

    Organizational structure –

Many customers will not buy from a supplier whose ownership is considered to be unethical, greedy, or overly profit-driven. Many customers positively seek suppliers with ethical convictions and ethos, such as mutuals, cooperatives, or social enterprises. These issues are, therefore, now unavoidably part of marketing. When marketing fails to consider or influence these matters, marketing activity is potentially less able and effective.

    Organizational integrity –

(Integrity means honesty, worthiness—meaning good). It includes environmental and social responsibility, 'Fairtrade', etc. Where marketing fails to involve, address, and influence these fundamentals of organizational values, marketing is, to an extent (dependent on the service/market sector), disabled.

    The emotional contract –

The relationship between the organization and staff directly affects the market image and customer service/relationships. For decades, marketing has extended its reach to staff (traditionally, for example, 'internal marketing' via newsletters and staff briefings, etc.). But nowadays this 'internal' facet is immensely more significant. Organizational integrity and related failings are now much more transparent. Employer/employee relationships are now seen as undeniably influencing the quality and ethics of conduct and service. (for example, scandals featuring News International privacy criminality, insurance industry miss-selling, and banking/investment risk). As such, excluding considerations such as the emotional contract from the marketing responsibility is challenging.

  • Definitions of Marketing1:43

    Definitions of Marketing

Here are some descriptions of marketing, oldest first. The increasingly broad nature of these marketing definitions reflects the increasing dimensions by which organizations engage with their markets and how the meaning of marketing has grown.

    •    "The action of selling, i.e., to bring or send to market," and "Produce to be sold in the market."

    •    "The action or business of promoting and selling products and services, including market research and advertising."

    •    "Marketing is the management process responsible for profitably identifying, anticipating, and satisfying customer requirements."

    •    "Marketing involves and includes all organizational activities which involve or affect the relationship between a supplier/provider organization and its audience and stakeholders."

    Definition of Advertising and Advertisement

We now see more clearly that advertising is entirely different, too, and within marketing:

    •    "The activity or profession of producing commercial product or service advertisements."

    • An advertisement is " a notice or announcement in a public medium promoting a product, service, or event or publicizing a job vacancy."

    •    "Communicating by print, electronic, or other media to a customer/audience/market about a product/service/organization to improve the desire for or view of the product/service/organization."

    •    (Extending usefully as:) "...Advertising seeks, in measurable, cost-effective, controllable ways, to generate inquiries or sales and to raise awareness/perceptions of a supplier/provider/organization, by presenting motivating communications to an appropriate audience."

    In summary

    Marketing and advertising are different.

Marketing is a vast area that includes advertising, not vice versa.

Marketing also provides PR, online presence/activities, customer service, selling/sales admin (methods and structure/strategy), branding, exhibitions, sponsorship, new product development, merchandising, surveys and market research, political lobbying, and even extends to ethos, culture, training, and organizational constitutional issues since all this affects an organization's or product/service provider's image and trading style.

Advertising is far more specific than marketing; advertising is a function of marketing, and encompasses methods of communication with the audience designed to produce sales inquiries and improve awareness/perceptions of the product/brand/organization. Advertising refers to printed and electronic media that are presented in one way or another to the market or audience, including packaging, point of sale, brochures, and sales literature. Advertising increasingly extends to 'advertorial' in traditional and online media, combining objective, helpful information, and more personal advertising/endorsement. Advertising (when properly executed) is a statistically driven and measurable marketing strategy implementation, via carefully selected communications methods, targeted at predetermined audiences.

Advertising is one of several instruments/means by which marketing operates.

We might also regard advertising as one means of tactical implementation of the strategic aims of marketing.

Why My First Business Failed?

When I started my small business in 2001, I hadn't done any proper preparations to become successful. A potential entrepreneur must do statistical surveying, have a passion for business, a successful strategy, and a pay and consumption structure. I reviewed the first day I accepted control over the company; I got exhausted and overwhelmed with work and unnecessary utilization. All those I had not masterminded came as a paralyzing to me and started to allude to dissatisfaction and frustration. Regardless, I lost vitality for that business after a couple of months. It leads me to consider ways to deal with a surrender of that business.

What is your enthusiasm?
