Learn how to sketch. Sketching means drawing without going into detail. Doing one sketch on top of another trains you to explore different compositions/ideas on the canvas. This is a very important skill, as whatever you decide in this stage is what you are committed to for however long the painting takes.

Learn how to make sure that proportions are correct. This skill is especially important when painting from life, but also important in terms of checking that everything fits on the canvas in the way that you want. Because there are still no details, it is still easy to change the position or scale of objects or shapes.

Learn to see tones. This is one of the most important skills and is the key both to realistic painting and to understanding colour in general. The challenge is see your painting in terms of light and dark, without being distracted by colour or detail.

Tone (light and dark)
05:30

Learning to use a limited palette as the foundation for your painting. This gives you control over your palette by building up the intensity of your colours slowly. It is surprising how much can be done with a limited palette.

Earth colours
11:05

Adding at least two of each primary colour to the palette so that you can mix any colour you need. Learning to build up stronger colours slowly from the earth colours.

Pure colours
10:09

Learn how to modulate areas of colour with warm and cool. This helps to create nuance and depth and can be used in both abstract and realistic painting.

Warm and cool colours
14:59

Adding details is one of the last stages of the painting and learning to wait until this stage before adding detail is a great time saver. How long you spend on this stage is up to you as you have laid all the foundation work in the previous stages.

Adding detail
11:06

Learn how to add highlights and finishing touches. The key is not to overdo it.
