Learn to paint this lovely Painted Lady Butterfly using masking fluid, layers, wet in wet, washes, stippling and dry brush. We will start by applying a background and will then move on to the exquisite detail and muted colours within the wings. I will guide you through each step to ensure that you understand how all the elements fit together in order to produce this finished painting. All this alongside a range of other watercolour techniques.
Here is the first part of this lovely Painted Lady butterfly!
In Part 1 you will learn how to get just the right background using wet in wet techniques. We will work on transferring the image to the paper and will then start on the first washes needed to give the foundation to the details which will be added later.
In this second part of the butterfly I will guide you through the process of applying further blended wet in wet washes and then adding those first detailed layers!
In Part 3 we really get into the finer details! I will show you my technique on lightly blending layers of detail to set them back. You will learn how to 'map out' the painting to make it easier to find your way around. Then with the finest of touches add those little mid tone details.
We are starting to get a feel of realism now with the many layers of details added. Here we will fine tune these details with our 00 brush, adding white paint to really bring out the wings.
Here is the final part of this beautiful Painted Lady butterfly. In part 5 we will complete the butterfly and paint the flowers.
A big thank you to everyone who has followed this and my other lessons. I hope you have a go at this tutorial so go on, let's paint in watercolour together!
Paul :-)

Learn from my 40+ years of experience
I've been painting for over 40 years and have taught through videos, in person for group and written many magazine tutorials. Due to this I do have a very good understanding on how I can help you learn this fantastic medium.
A fast track way to learn!
Yes, I've made many mistakes whilst painting of these many years, but because of this I can help you avoid making the same ones!
I really like to focus on the watercolour techniques needed to create a realistic painting. Likewise, I love sharing this style of painting through my video tutorials and hope I inspire others to create detailed wildlife portraits too.
Now, let's get those brushes wet!
