Students will learn how you can get the most out of this course. It’s very simple…. you have to MATE with the material.
In this lecture, students will gain a basic understanding of thoughts as they are defined in the course. Students will also learn the difference between different types of thoughts.
Students will learn the difference between thoughts and beliefs, and gain more understanding of the meaning of core beliefs, and to identify the most common types of core beliefs. Students will also be asked to identify the core beliefs that they experience themselves.
Students will learn how the ways that we think about and perceive situations affect emotions and behaviors.
Students will gain an understanding of what is meant by negative thinking, and learn about the origins of their negative thinking.
Students will learn what is meant by thought distortions, and learn specifically about a distortion referred to as Mind Reading.
Students will learn about the distortion referred to as Catastrophizing.
Students will learn about the distortion referred to as Labeling.
Students will learn about the distortions referred to as Minimizing the Positives and Exaggerating the Negatives.
Students will be introduced to the 5 step process for overcoming negative thinking. They will be introduced the the process used to track progress.
Students will be introduced to Questioning the Evidence (Step 2).
Students will practice the Questioning the Evidence (Step 2).
Students will be introduced to Forming Alternative Thoughts (Step 3).
Students will practice the Forming Alternative Thoughts (Step 3).
Students will be introduced to Analyzing the Evidence (Step 4).
Students will practice the Analyzing the Evidence of Alternative Thoughts (Step 4).
Students will be introduced to and given guidance for practicing Selecting a Thought (Step 5).
Students will be provided with information for evaluating progress using the tracking system.
Students will be given an additional strategy to use in the event that they have difficulty using the process to reduce negative thinking in specific situations.

The main objectives of this course are that you will be able to understand the structure of thoughts, the relationship between the way you think about situations and what you perceive in those situations, AND finally you will learn how to use a proven 5-step process to help you gain control over your negative thinking.

This course is 80% video, with a few quizzes to reinforce the discussed material, and a step by step walk through practice for how to implement the strategy of the 5 step process.
