I have a pretty good idea that you will be able to install a Kitchen sink basket strainer after signing up for this video course. There's more to come so keep watching as I will show you what is included in this video course. You ready to learn? Hope so!
Let's talk some basics here first...Hmmm what is plumber's putty...good question. You may have heard someone talk before about using plumber's putty & you didn't want to open your mouth to ask a stupid question like "what's that?" LOL Relax...you can ask any question you want here because no DIY beginner question is silly.
Plumber's putty is something you use on a few different plumbing items like in a Kitchen sink area or bathroom sink for instance. Plumber's putty is a pliable putty kind of like silly putty...only different. Do you remember that stuff when you were a kid?
Plumber's putty can be purchased at most local hardware stores & will of course be found in the plumbing department. If you can't find it just find a sales person & they will show you what they have. You can now get plumber's putty in at least two different options. One is the standard type plumber's putty that is kind of oily when you handle it with your hands but no issue there as you can wash your hands when you get done.
The other new type of plumber's putty you can get where the container says something about no oily residue. It's a cleaner type of plumber's putty since there' really no oily substance that sticks to your hands while using it but this type of plumber's putty is a little more expensive than the standard stuff....of course! Being the cheap type of guy I am I just use the standard plumber's putty & will run about the price of a cup of coffee. You probably won't use that much of it for just installing a Kitchen sink basket strainer but you can store the rest in the container for quite some time to use it again on your next DIY sink project....depending how long that will be. Once it hardens up in the plastic container...forget about it.
When do you use plumber's putty? Pretty much whenever you install like a Kitchen sink basket strainer or the trim piece of a garbage disposer, to tighten down to the sink surface, & you can use plumber's putty in a bathroom sink for when it's time to install a sink drain for instance. That's pretty much the only times I think I would use plumber's putty.
News flash...have you ever heard of someone applying tub & tile caulking to secure a bathroom sink drain or a Kitchen sink basket strainer or around a garbage disposer? Ah....I would not recommend using anything like that. Could it work?...maybe but you can always count on plumber's putty working & lasting as long as you own your home! Plumber's putty is really easy to clean up too unlike if you over spouge caulking for instance & need to clean up without damaging a stainless steel Kitchen sink for instance.
If you ever have questions & want a second opinion on whether or not you can use something other than plumber's putty then I would suggest when you are at the hardware store, ask a sales person who works in the plumbing department & ask him what they think.
With DIY you have choices then you get to live with your choices so get a second opinion & make up your mind yourself. You're learning!
I guess that does it for this video course for how to install a Kitchen sink basket strainer & beyond.
I hope you have seen how you can install your own strainer for sure. If you still feel you need some more assurance just watch the video series again to see what you might have forgotten about...sometimes this helps.
Hmmmm now that you have decided to install a Kitchen sink basket strainer you might have this nagging question about how to go about cutting & fitting & installing all the drain piping together under the sink since maybe you have never done this before or just once & you had leaks. Well if you are working on an existing sink area & you are replacing things then you can probably modify the existing plumbing drainage lines to fit to your new sink strainer.
Now of course if you are remodeling your kitchen & have cut out all the existing drainage piping because you are installing a new sink & you will be installing a garbage disposer to a double sink, you will also be installing a separate sink strainer area so you now have two drain line areas to connect up together to then install an additional adjustable p-trap they call it to then figure out how to connect all that up to then connect up to the drain pipe sticking out of the wall....joy!
If this is you then just know I have another video course I am currently working on but by the time you see this, this additional course I have to offer you is all about connecting up all the drain pipes under the sink so you might want to check out that course as I think it will be over 2 hours long...I know!
Until then.....this completes this video course...well done!
