Course content

1 section11 lectures40m total length
  • Introduction2:14

Design furniture efficiently by turning hand sketches into buildable 3D models with SketchUp, guided step by step from material selection to a producible design.

  • Moodboard3:20

Create a mood board to define your design focus by collecting images that convey a cohesive mood, guiding your materials with natural greens and a Mediterranean vibe using Pinterest.

  • The First Sketch2:08

Translate your mood board into a first sketch by analyzing chair construction. Create side views and a section to study size and parts for a class project.

  • Create Your Own Design2:22

Define your design requirements and dimensions, then refine style details to suit space and taste, using sketches to turn an idea into a buildable dining chair.

  • Materials1:54

Create a materials list with quantities, dimensions, and wood types for your design. Plan to reuse leftovers or sourced materials from local stores to minimize waste and speed up construction.

  • 3D Modelling in SketchUp8:47

Translate sketch ideas into a realistic, to-scale 3D model in sketchup, using millimeter measurements, the push/pull tool, and groups to build and organize building plans quickly.

  • Modelling Your Design5:02

Translate your chair sketch into a realistic SketchUp model by building precise parts for furniture with plywood or planks, using dimensions and components for symmetry, and refining proportions in 3D.

  • Adjusting & Details2:55

Adjust and refine furniture designs by studying mood boards, testing slimmer chair legs for elegance, optimizing construction and hierarchy, and choosing screw placement to enhance sturdiness and visual cleanliness.

  • Optimize Your Design3:09

Fine-tune your 3-D design by turning parts into components, color-coding them, and aligning with a material list to minimize waste; adjust components to fit materials and update drawings.

  • Create a Building Plan3:00

Translate your design into a building plan with precise dimensions by switching from perspective to parallel. Use top view and the dimension tool to create measurement lines and plan construction.

  • Build a Prototype5:27

Design your first piece of furniture and build a prototype by gathering materials and planning cuts. Use a construction kit to speed up, improve precision, iterate in 3D, and share.

Requirements

  • You need to have a computer

Description

How great would it be when you can translate your idea’s for interior items, woodworking projects or furniture into a producible design?

In this course I will show you step by step how to do that and at the same time you will learn how to design in SU that you can download for free. You usually learn the fastest if you are going to do a project for yourself and just get started. So the class project is to design your own furniture and I will guide you through the process of making a high quality design.

First we will make a sketch by hand and analyse other similar designs. After that you choose which materials you want to use and we calculate how much you need to buy from the strore.

Then we will translate your design into a 3D model. I’m gonna give you a quick start course how you can use Sketch Up and how it can help you to create a realistic custom made design and building plan. Which makes building much faster and more precise. And therefore a lot more fun. You encounter fewer mistakes and you will use your time and material super efficiently.

I will use the example of a pallet chair and I show you how to design and build this with the use of just one pallet.

This class is for every creative person who wants to take their design and building skills to a new level.

Step 1: Make a moodboard and think about the materials you want to use.

Step 2: Make at least 1 sketch analysis of a design that resembles what you envision.

Step 3: Make a final sketch with the right dimensions

Step 4: Make a list of your materials

Step 5: Practice using Sketch Up by drawing all the materials from your list and put them in a row from big to small.

Step 6: Translate your sketch design to a 3d model with your material list in mind and adjust it when necessary.

Step 7: Finalize your design.

Step 8: Optimize your design by using your materials list.
