Welcome to the Introduction:
In this first lecture, we will discuss Self Published Successors, Apps we will be using, How to combat Imposter Syndrome throughout the process, and what to look forward to.
As we Move further along in the course, the Applications I highly encourage are:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe InDesign can be downloaded from the https://creativecloud.adobe.com/. Go to creativecloud.com and download the app for less than 30 Dollars.
Canva
Canva will be used to design our book cover.
Canva can be downloaded as an app or used on your webserver.
For more Design freedom, I recommended purchasing the app; however, the free app works just as well.
KDP
We will be using KDP.com and Createspace.com to create the layout of our book cover.
KDP is free
I also highly recommend using KDP to print your book for an affordable price.
In this lecture, we will learn about ISBN and the importance of purchasing your own ISBN for future sales.
Some of the Links I recommend for purchasing your own ISBN number are:
1. ISBN Services: https://www.isbnservices.com/isbn-numbers/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIppK48PTH9AIV5SdMCh1zSgLIEAAYASAAEgLbJvD_BwE
2. Bowker ISBN: https://www.myidentifiers.com/identify-protect-your-book/isbn/buy-isbn?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIppK48PTH9AIV5SdMCh1zSgLIEAAYAiAAEgIhSvD_BwE
3. U.S. ISBN: https://www.isbn.org/
In this Section, we will Cover Finding the Perfect Trim Size for your book. Trim sizing is frequently based around the Genre of the book (For example, if you are publishing a children's book, children's books are usually larger in height and width)
What does Trim Sizing mean? Trim Sizing describes the Height and Weight of your book.
What things should I consider when Creating my book size?
Understand industry standards
Be mindful of aesthetic implications
Keep the reader in mind.
Below are some Examples of Common Trim Sizes (Book sizes) You are free to use:
5.5 x 8.5
6 x 9
6.14 x 9.21
8.5 x 8.5
7 x 10
8 x 10
8.5 x 11
Lets Dive Deeper into Standard Trim Sizes in Publishing of books:
Trim sizes are typically dictated by genre. Within these genres, there tends to be a range of commonly accepted sizes. The only real exceptions are mass market paperbacks and comic books, which typically conform to an industry-wide standard. Here’s a list of common standards for popular genres:
Mass market paperback books: This type of book is nearly always 4.25 x 6.87”.
Comic books: Comics are nearly always 6.625 x 10.25”
Trade paperbacks: Most fiction and general nonfiction books range from 5 x 8” to 6 x 9”. Shorter works, like novellas, are nearly always 5 x 8”. Hardbacks are most often 6 x 9”.
Textbooks: Since they frequently include illustrations and diagrams, textbooks tend to range from 6 x 9” all the way up to 8.5 x 11.”
In this Lecture, we will learn how to use Adobe InDesign
Before proceeding, please make sure you:
Have the Final Trim Size for your book
Have Adobe InDesign downloaded
Your Manuscript is completed
Your Manuscript is a Microsoft Document
(For a step by step guideline please be sure to click the "Adobe Indesign PDF" below).
In this section, we will be discussing Imposter syndrome throughout the process; most creatives struggle with imposter syndrome, Imposter syndrome is the experience of feeling like a phony—you feel as though at any moment you are going to be found out as a fraud—like you don't belong where you are. You only got there through dumb luck.
If this section isn't for you, please be sure to skip over it.
This lecture will discuss calculating your trim size, using KDP, and creating your book using Canva. (Be mindful that this is a very detailed lecture)
Please be sure to check the downloadable PDF files attached to this lecture for a step-by-step guide, along with the video.
This lecture will discuss the best services for printing your book. My personal favorite is KDP.
KDP is incredibly easy to use, and you can print your book for as low as 3 dollars a book.
Notes to consider:
Selling your book on Amazon, IngramSparks, Barnes, and Noble will result in you paying a royalty. A royalty payment is a payment made by one party to another that owns a particular asset for the right to ongoing use of that asset. Royalties can be up to 40%, nearly half of your profit.
To avoid paying royalties, I recommend using these sources to print your book and then selling your book from your PERSONAL website, or with a local bookstore (where you're able to negotiate royalties).
This Lecture will discuss uploading your book into KDP. If you have followed the directions in the previous lectures, this section will be a breeze.
The Lecture is pretty direct; Please make sure you have all of your materials.
Materials needed are
Final Manuscript (Exported from Adobe Indesign)
Final Book Cover (Exported as a PDF from Canva)
Purchased ISBN (From one of the links from our previous Lecture).
In this Lecture, we will learn about printing KDP. The process is straightforward.

Please have a social media account. Having a social media presence is very important (You could start building this before making your Book live by making teaser videos, quotes, etc.).
