There is no point to build a resume based on yourself ,you need to build a resume based on the mind of a recruiter .
You never know that writing a resume actually require high level of knowledge and skills ,well same goes to me .
Just look around your class , how many of them in the same class as you in the university ? 500 ? 1 thousands? 2 thousands? Or more ?
Well , all of you are going to end up with the same job , an accountant , marketing exepert, psychology , engineer and so on .How are you going to compete with them at the very first place ?
All of you hold the same degree ,similiar experience and similiar skills set .
What makes a recruiters pick you instead of the rest of the 1999? Well , getting your resume done the right way is the best first move to cut through the line and get yourself in for an interview.
Recruiters are not expert of job positions, they just have the high level information. Based on that information received from hiring manager, recruiters shortlist 1 out 100 resumes (at least for big companies) and forward them to hiring managers and interviewers for further screening. Also, recruiters don’t have enough time to scan each and every resume. Average time a recruiter spends to review a resume is 6 seconds. Yes, it is correct, JUST 6 SECONDS. You have to make sure that you create a positive impression in those 6 seconds to get an interview call.
Therefore , the details inside your resume , need to be able to catch the eyes of your recruiter as fast as possible .
And this can be done by the arrangement of the information presented on your resume ,the keywords that you used and also others format such as font size and also bolding the headings.
So , in this course you are going to learn about how to write a lean 1 page resume that impress your recruiter and hopefully get yourself the job that you passionate about.
I know that everyone need a job . But getting a job that you do not like doing , and stuck on it , it worst that not having a job .
Lets look at the Things to Consider When Looking For A Job
1) BENEFITS
Remember that your base salary is just one part of your compensation package. Insurance, retirement contribution and matching, paid time off, equity, bonuses, all of these should be considered before singing the contract .
2) HOURS
Not every office job is a 9 to 5.
Ask about what is the average working hours about the company, you can check this on google as well , or just ask anyone that work in the company . If you do work overtime ,are you are going to get paid for the extra hours ?
3)GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES
This is one of the top things that I will give heavy consideration when I looking for a job . This is very important escpecially for a fresh graudte . Get a company that provide heaps load of learning and growing opportunity .Because , you will not stay at the job position that you started for the rest of your life.
4) EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
You want to work for an organization that supports and encourages your growth , in order to grow, you will require additional education. Ask about whether the company provides continuing education , degree , workshop certification etc .—and also whether employees are encouraged to take advantage of these resources.
5) You feel appreciated and valued.
A paycheck is nice, but that goes straight to the bank. On the other hand, appreciation is something you carry in your soul every day. This appreciation can be communicated through respect, unexpected gifts, or just an old-fashioned “thank-you.”
6) It challenges you to grow. Look for a job that will make you better. Whether through challenging assignments, educational opportunities, demanding excellence, or informal mentors, a job that forces you to grow beyond your current skill set will make you a better person and it, a better company.
7) Life Satisfaction :
The ability to look back at your day, your year, or your life with satisfaction is more valuable than any number of in the bank.
A resume is a SUMMARY, information of your abilities, education, and experience.
It highlight your strongest assets and skills, and differentiate you from other candidates seeking similar positions.
A resume highlight specific parts of your past that demonstrate that you can do a particular job well.
Although it alone will not get you a job or internship, a good resume is an important element toward obtaining an interview.
Customize your resume to the type of job or position that you are seeking. This doesn’t mean that all of your experiences must relate directly, but your resume should reflect the kind of skills the employer would value.
Before a job interview , the resume is the tool employers use to screen job seekers.
Most recent role -Recruiter generally trying to figure out what this person's current status is, and why/if they might even be interested in a new role.
Have they only been in their last position for 3 months?
Are they laid off? Did they get fired? Have they only been in their role for a few months and they're possibly hating it? But most importantly, is their most recent experience relevant to the position for which I'm hiring?
Achievement : The next big thing that recruiter want to see is your achievement .
If you are applying for a sales manager position , here is the best place to “show off” your achievement .
For example ,increased regional sales from $500k to $1million within 18 months exceeding quota by 20% .
This is the time where you can show how good you are.
Company recognition - If you were working in one of the big 5 accounting firms Ernst & Young (EY) ,Deloitte & Touche ,Arthur Andersen. ,KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) , you will be most probably going to get a accountant job without any problem .
Working in a company that has high reputation will definitely increase the chances of getting your resume passed through.
Social Media -- This is not required. But if your social media are showing the things that you do are highly related to your application, your recruiter may be interested.
This includes personal domains, Quora profiles, Twitter handles, instagram ,youtube channel .I got myself a couple of phone interviews through linkedin just because the recruiters saw what I did on my instagram .So , you may consider to put a link of your social media on your resume if it related to your job.
Overall presentation -- This includes spelling, grammar, ease of use, ability to clearly present ideas. Writing a resume is like summarizing a thesis . Your information need to be precise , important and only show the results you get .
Keyword search - Not every resume will be receive in a physical paper form , especially during this digital era . Most resume are send through online , and thus you must include keywords that related to the job you apply .
For example , if you are applying for a job that require knowledge in Java script , and the words “java script” did not pop out when your recruiter press on command + F or shift F , your resume will be toss toss into the recycle bin .
Seconds Views - Recruiters will only take less that 10 seconds to glance through a resume .A recruiter will only read the resume far more in depth,if he/she like what he/she sees in the 10 seconds .
Generally a recruiter will not thoroughly read a resume of someone who did not pass the above categories.
The Action Verbs - Action verbs are used to deliver important information in a sentence and add impact and purpose. These verbs play a vital role in grammar and signals to the reader what action the subject is performing in the sentence.
For example :
If you were in charge of a project or initiative from start to finish a project, instead of using “led” , you can use ,Controlled ,Coordinated,Executed, Headed .
These words are much more impact .
So , make sure your resume have all of these criteria in it .
Fake It till you make it does not works in resume . Well you may get a job interview by writing a CV that impressed the recruiter by over rating your ability and skills , but you need to face the music by justifying your ability during the interview session .
So , in order to not embarrass yourself during a job interview , everything that you write in your CV , you need to be able to justified it.
Embarrassing yourself during an interview session is bad enough .Overstating your accomplishments can send up a red flag that may eliminate your chances of securing an interview in the first place as well .
I do understand that sometime , we will overstate our self in order to get the job that we really love , or when we really need a job ,especially for someone that just graduate and need the money to pay back the study debt .I have gone through that .
However ,it's in your best interest to promote yourself with accurate and specific information on your resume. This way, you'll be able to target the jobs that really match your career personality and where you can best use your skills and experience. If employers hire you for your real skills and qualities, they will be more satisfied with their choice and you will perform better in the new role where you are the right fit!
Common Mistake #1 Typos and grammatical errors
It needs to be grammatically perfect. If your resume isn't, employers will draw a conclusions about you, like, "This person can't write," or, "This person obviously doesn't care."
Being said so , not every job application need perfect grammar .If you are applying for a professional job such as doctor ,lawyer or a manager position then grammar will be highly weighted , or if you are applying for aenglish teacher position , then you better make sure your grammar is at tip top.
Common Mistake #2 Lack of specifics
Your resume shouldn’t simply state the obvious to a hiring manager. Employers need to understand what you've done and accomplished. For example:
A. Worked with restaurent ABC
B. Worked with the best restaurent in George Street , serving more than 300 customers daily .
Both of these phrases could describe the same person, but the details and specifics in example B will more likely grab an employer's attention.
Common Mistake #3 Mention duties instead of Accomplishments
Your resume needs to show how good you are at your job, your recruiters are not interested on what you do but wht you have accomplished.
Noone will be interested if you job is a sales person.People will be mor einterested on how much sales you make in a month or years!
So , write down the things that you have complished instead of what you do.
Common Mistake #4
Not using Action Verbs
Action Verbs help you keep your resume to one page, and allow you to clearly and uniquely describe your past employment in a way that will stand out to hiring managers.
Common Mistake #5 The Ugly Format
If you resume featuring five different fonts,5 different colours , your resume will be inside the bin . Unless you are applying a job in the creative and design industry , your resume must be in a profesional format .
Before writing your summary and your achievement on the next coming lecture ,I would like you to list down your top 5 achievement in this 5-8 years .
If you are a sales person ,You need to preciously write down the exact numbers of how much sales you have help you company made in these 5-8 years , which year was that and which quater of the year was that .
If you are a fresh graduate ,you may want t list down your final year project result , what is the project is all about . I am in the fitness industry , my final year project was to increase the bench press strength of my athlete .
So , my achievement will be leading 15 national rugby players, and increased their bench press strength by 15 % in year 2009 .
No matter what industry are you in , there must be a “goal” , “mission” or task that you must complete . So , these goal ,task or mission is your achievement . And on this summary session , all
You need to do , is to list out , how well you achieve this goals and tasks .
This is the first 2-3 seconds out of the 6 seconds that your recruiter will spent in scanning through your resume .So make it impactful.
A resume summary is a 2-3 sentence summary of your career.
You need to make sure your resume summary statement concisely demonstrates why you are an ideal candidate for the specific job and company.
In about one to 3 sentences, highlight your most relevant strengths, skillset, and core competencies that are unique to you as a candidate. In particular, demonstrate how you would add value to the company.
Have you saved money for a company in the past? Did you streamline an administrative process? Include skills and experiences that will impress the employer, using specific percentages, numbers, or dollar amounts to quantify your achievements.
Preciously list out the numbers , the percentage and also the years , date of achievement if it applies.
Use action verbs when writing your summary, as it can strengthen your statement.
This is an example of a summary from a regional banking sales manager .
“Professional bank regional sales manager with over 8 years of experience.”
It clearly states the years of experience of himself in the industry.
“Leading 15 branches to achieve annual sales revenue of $ 200 millions.”
As you can see over here , he used active verbs such as leading in this sentence and also clearly stated the sales revenue of 200 millions dollar .
Instead of putting down , “help company to achieve annual target” , by stating the figures that you achieve will definitely put a great impression on your ability .
Next lets look at a bad summary example by a nurse .
“Nursing school graduate looking for a job at a high reputation hospital. Compassionate and hardworking in patient care. I'm a friendly person and good at problem solving .“
It is good to know that you are hard working , but you did not mention your achievements. The hiring manager or the recruiter has no idea what you’re capable of doing .
A better way of writing will be
“Licensed RN with 3 years of clinical experience .Through proven daily care and problem solving, developed and implemented a new patient care plan, hence increased patient confidence 35%. Improved support service and overall quality standards of the facility by 20%”
Recap:
As we learn in this lecture , a summary is a highlight of your achievement and also your strength that are related to the job that you want to apply .
Do not put any unnecessarily information that are not related to the job that you are applying .
If you are someone that has tonnes of experience and achievement to share ,put the top 2-3 achievement .
Last but not least , remember you only has 6 seconds to make your recruiter impress with your achievement ,and why you are the best among others.
This is the last 2-3 seconds that your recruiters will put their eyes on , before ringing the bell and say “next” or “ I want you”.
So , do or die .
Successfully writing the achievements section of your CV might be the most difficult part of your resume . As you may be confuse of what to put and also how to put it .
Your achievements are the things you did which made a positive impact and contribution to your employer’s business . The skills and knowledge you'd need to perform your everyday work duties do not count.
The simplest ways to write your achievement , is to use the 'What?/So What?' formula. For example:
If you are working with a apps developer
Ask yourself this :
What did I do for the company?
- launched a new apps for my company
So what is the result from this new apps?
- help company genearated $500k revenue in 3 months time
In your achievement section , the recruiter would like to see how competence you are and what you can achieve if they decided to hire you .Remember to list things out as details as possible , such as the years , the figure and also the numbers of people that you lead in your team , if appropriate.
Beware , it is very tempting to over promise in this section , be honest , and tell the truth is the best policy.
If you are someone that has over 20 years of experience in different companies , you do not need to list all of them !
Your recruiter will not be interested in which company you have been working with 20 years back . Just list out the most recent 2-3 companies that you work with will be sufficient .
And do not forget to use action verbs instead of the general verbs in your writing ,and also put in keywords for the job position that you are applying for.
Lets look at the achievement of a bank regional sales manager
- Launched a new saving plan in Bank CDE, increased market share by 15% in 18 months.
- Coordinated a sales team Bank ABC resulting in 4800 sales.
- Surpassed sales goals by 19% in 2012 and 14% in 2015
As you can see over here , he listed clearly what he did and the impact of his works to the company.for example :Launched a new saving plan in Bank CDE, increased market share by 15% in 18 months.
He also clearly stated the amount of market shares increased in a specific duration of 18month .
The action verbs that he used over here are Launched ,coordinated, surpassed
And the keywords that he used are sales and bank.
Lets look at a bad achievement statement by sales manager .
“- Reported sales team results to executive management on a monthly basis .
- Researched new marketing strategies to increase short and long term revenue.”
As we discuss before ,on the achievement section , you need to clearly mention everything in details . For a sales manger, how much you have help the company generated ,how many percent increased revenue have you increased , which quater is that etc . You need to kinda “show off” how good you are in making things happen .
In a resume , no point for you to be “ humble “ , list out all your ability , your strength and result ! If the job is really what you love to do , fight for it.
Next lest look at What to Put in On Your Work Experience :
At your work experience you need to highlight Your Accomplishments . It is pretty similiar with your summary , but over here , you get to write abit more based on the individual company that you work with .Remember on include what is important , and precisely write down the figure that you make impact on .
Tailor Your Work Experience to Each Job. Well you do not really need to change the whole thing , the trick is that focus on the relevant keywords. If you are applying for a sales job , make sure that the keyword “sales “ is out there . A lot of time , a position will cross over to another , such as a sales manager will also be managing operation . So in this case , if you are applying for an operation position , make sure the keyword “operation” in inside your resume .
Putting only the latest job experience . You might already in the industry for more than 20 years . You do not need to list down all your work experience, instead , put the recent 3- 4 will do .
Lets look at a good example of a work experience resume .
“Provide leadership and develop successful sales strategies for regional branches in 15 states to enable sales of retail banking products. Train and mentor 100+ new and veteran sales professionals both one-on-one and in large, national employee training sessions.
Successfully supported regional revenue growth of 150% YoY for 2012 to 2019
Consistently achieved collateralized lending results in the top 2 out of 15 national regions.
Recognized at 2017 National Sales Meeting for providing excellent service in the field.”
As you can see over here , the work experience that stated are clear , simple and straight to the point . The figures are mentioned , the action verbs such as develop, train , support, recognized are use in the writting .
Beside this , a good amount of keywords such as sales , and bank are also used in this resume .
So , this is what your recruiter want to see .So , this is the end of what your recruiter want to see , if they are interested on what they see , you will receive a call for interview in a couple of days . If you don’t , you can always , shot them an email or give them a call . Remember if you really want somethin , you need to fight for it!
Lets have a recap:
In order to write a good achievement statement,
- Ask The “What? / So What?” questions.
To write a good work experience statement ,
Be precise and details on the figures , write only the latest 3-4 job ,include action verbs and also keywords.
Your recruiter may or may not glance through this at first , if they are interested with you , they will read through this . If not , they will not bother.
I will not say this is not important , but compare with others , this is the less important . Think about this , will you want to hire a person that holds a master , that cant do a job , or you want to hire a person that do not have a degree but able to generate $1 million for the company ?
And this is why this lean resume is structured in a way that ,you show what you can do to recruiter , instead of showing what you might be able to do with your education level .
In the real world , result is the king . No matter how good you say you are , results are still the main things to get your self promoted .
I am not saying that education is not important , I am just saying compare with what you know how to do and what you learn how to do , what you know how to do is more important than what you learn how to do .
Now , lets learn what sort of skills and education should you put in your resume:
The world is moving fast and we need to move as fast as well .Workplace are demanding more and more skills .So , upgrade yourself every now and then .Some of the High Demand Skills In Workplace are
- Problem solving
