Welcome! In this course, I am going to share lessons from my life and stories from changemakers around the world so that you can find your own path to building a better world - and create an actionable plan to do it. Let's go!
About Uprise
This course is brought to you by the Uprise Institute - a new online academy dedicated to sharing lessons and wisdom from changemakers working to build a better world.
Many of today’s most inspiring, talented leaders are undervalued or ignored because of who they are or where they come from. Similarly, too many of the world’s future leaders aren’t able to reach their full potential because of systemic inequalities and barriers to success.
How many world-changing ideas have we missed out on because we failed to support, empower and recognize potential leaders? What kind of world could we create if we unlocked all of that lost human potential?
At Uprise, we want to make learning from world class leaders accessible to everyone so that we can all live in a better world. We're excited that you are here to join us for the journey.
The Workbook
We've provided a full PDF workbook that you can print out or download to use on any tablet. Individual pages of the workbook will also be available as a resource at the bottom of each assignment like the "Intention Setting" page listed here. Or you can simply do the course in the Udemy app, it all depends on what's best for you. Let's get started.
We're going to identify your passions and dig into your personal purpose. We're also going to take a look at your strengths and weaknesses. This is all meant to give you a solid foundation for how to start your impact work and help you get to know yourself more honestly. Let's get started!
In this video I share a few quick stories about how I discovered my career path. I'm going to break my own story down into The Problem, The Idea, The Opportunity, and The Action so that you can apply the same principle to your own journey.
Only when your passion and purpose are integrated into your project, work, or effort, will you be able to access the tenacity, personal resilience, and long term sustainability needed to successfully lead your efforts to the finish line.
What do you choose to work on, learn or do, no matter what else is going on? What would you be willing to dance 107 hours for? Let's dig in to your passions and find the activities and issues that are most likely to lead you to truly satisfying work.

In this field trip we are visiting Enoc Espinoza in the rural Costa Rican rainforest. He's an example of a visionary local leader living with passion and working with purpose. We're going to learn about what drives him, as well as what he's doing to change the world around him and how he's empowering his community.
A quick introduction to this next chapter where we'll dive into a deeper understanding of what makes you tick, finding you guiding North Star, and finally taking your first action step. Let's go!
A summary of how I found what I wanted to work in and dedicate myself to, broken down into four sections that anyone can apply to their own search for purpose and action:
The Problem
The Idea
The Opportunity
The Action
These quick reflections will help you identify your core motivations. Let's go!
We've been looking internally to understand what drives you, and now we're going to look externally for who and what inspires you. The goal is to find someone who truly inspires you, who's path could provide a bit of a roadmap for your journey, and who could be your North Star to keep you oriented.
We're heading to rural Nepal, to learn about the Nepalese Community Homestay network, and how it's empowering a new generation of women across the country.
A sneak preview of Part 2 of this course: "Building Your Support System, Mentors & Advisors". It will incorporate field trips to Mexico, to explore climate change, permaculture and indigenous farming, as well as a Syrian refugee camp elementary school on the border of Syria and Lebanon.
We are currently working on Part 2 and you can be involved in shaping the course and helping us grow. We would love to hear your feedback so we can make Part 2 even better. Additionally, anyone who signs up to our mailing list or contacts us now is eligible for a scholarship for Part 2.
In this course award-winning documentary filmmaker and social entrepreneur, Marco Ríos Bollinger, takes you on a journey to meet inspiring change-makers around the globe and guides you through a step-by-step process to find your own path toward building a better world.
You will take virtual field trips to Nepal and Costa Rica to learn the stories of inspiring community leaders and learn lessons about the personal attributes, actions and support systems they needed to affect change. WHAT YOU’LL GET OUT OF THIS COURSE
By the end of this course you’ll have a strong understanding of how to translate your personal passions and skills into a tangible action plan for getting started on your next social impact project or career.
WHAT YOU WILL DO AND LEARN
Meet Inspiring Community Leaders via Documentary-style Virtual Field Trips - through professionally produced virtual field trips to Nepal and Costa Rica you will not only witness and learn from real live impact projects and community leaders, but you will also learn to identify the common story arc in each change-maker’s journey: The Problem, The Idea, The Opportunity, and The Action, so that you can apply the same principles to your own journey.
Uncover your Passion & Purpose - only when your passion and purpose are integrated into your project, work, or effort, will you be able to access the tenacity, personal resilience, and long term sustainability needed to successfully lead your efforts to the finish line.
Apply Your Strengths & Weaknesses - next Marco will help you take an honest look at your strengths and weaknesses to understand what kind of team and support you will need to build around your efforts. As Marco explains, true honesty with yourself about what you’re not good at is critical to the execution process.
Identify Your North Star - we will research others who have blazed your trail before you to help give you a roadmap for success. Learn how to identify your North Star to keep you on track as you dive into the challenges of your impact work.
Take Action - The final step in this course is taking your first action to connect with the colleagues, community, and professionals in the impact space you want to join. Learn how to take this outreach action step with confidence as it is the beginning of your new project or career.
