What you'll learn

  • Learn how to Render and Composite a Wall Destruction in a Live Action Plate

Course content

3 sections26 lectures7h 30m total length
  • Introduction8:34

Master the full live action Houdini workflow for wall destruction, from raw footage to plate integration, using After Effects or Premiere, with Nuke, color correction, and roto.

  • Camera Solve in Nuke13:25

Learn to solve camera motion in nuke with a 3D tracker, create a 3D scene, set a ground plane, and align shot geometry using focal length and lens distortion awareness.

  • Prepping Scene11:23

Prepare rough geometry in Houdini, locking the camera to the model builder node, then triangulate to place geometry in 3-d space and export Olympic files and OJs.

  • Camera Writeout1:30

Set up camera writeout for live-action wall destruction by exporting an fbx with scene and camera nodes, trackers as locaters, and stand-in geometry across frames 0 to 107 in Houdini.

  • Scene Orientation12:54

Import and organize the scene in Maya, scale to five units, align and lock the camera, and verify overscan for a solid wall destruction setup in Houdini.

  • Environment Build29:24

Align the worldspace camera and ground plane to prevent sliding, then build and extrude environment geometry in houdini for wall destruction, preparing collision geometry and future breaking pieces.

  • Collision Proofings5:46

Extract the wall and stand-in geometry, then extrude the ground in worldspace to add thickness. Freeze transforms, delete history, and center pivots for clean, non-intersecting geometry.

  • Wall UV Layout13:57

Learn to lay out wall UVs in Houdini by isolating geometry, matching normals, using planar and camera projection, unfolding shells, straightening UVs, and preparing textures for projection-based reference.

  • Projection Baking14:27

Create projection textures in Maya, bake two camera projections into wall pieces, then composite top and bottom in Photoshop, with Houdini Voronoi fractures for interior and exterior cracks.

  • Photoshop Merge10:27

Execute a Photoshop merge workflow to bake UV layouts, mask and blend textures, and refine color for a Houdini wall destruction scene, aligning textures with footage.

  • Geo to Houdini16:00

Build a cookie cutter geometry in Houdini by extruding along voronoi fracture lines and smoothing normals. Export the geometry for Houdini and prepare a hdr image in Photoshop.

  • 360 HDRI Build6:54

Assemble an hdr image from nine on-set exposures in photoshop, merge to hdr pro, disable normalization, keep 32-bit mode, then save as a radiance file.

Requirements

  • Houdini, maya

Description

In this video we cover the rare training for incorporating Houdini pyrotechnics effects with live action incorporation. We start with building out the camera and geometry.  Quickly we move into advanced voronoi fracture techniques adding layers of debris.  We then move into the composite layout in the end in Nuke.

Software Used.

Houdini FX 16.5.323, Maya 2018, Nuke 11.1V1, Photoshop
