    Introduction to Home Healthcare

Presently, there are increasing cases of chronic diseases in the world. There is also an increasing aging population. Advancement in medical care and disease prevention have led to an extended longevity (higher lifespan) for people with chronic diseases. Chronic disease patients need long term health checks and monitoring leading to high cost of hospital care and the need for home healthcare to reduce frequent hospital visits, cost of care and unnecessary hospitalizations. More so, an increasing rise in cost of hospital care these days has led to the need for home healthcare. Post-surgical patients can stay in their homes to recover fully after being discharged from the hospital. They receive post-operative care in the comfort of their homes from a team of home healthcare practitioners. This reduces the cost of care for the patients.

Home healthcare are healthcare services delivered outside the traditional healthcare settings like the hospitals, clinics and skilled nursing facilities. Introduction of home healthcare over the years in some countries led to the practice of healthcare outside these known traditional settings. Home healthcare practice allows patients to receive care in the comfort of their homes. Patients receive daily healthcare and support services in their own homes. Managing a patient's daily needs gives some relief not only to the patient, but to his family as well ‘cause both receive support services. It is important to note that all home care settings are not the same. Patients’ family settings are unique and have different healthcare and support needs. Families differ in culture and traditions, including religious beliefs. These are very important to take into consideration when providing home care services.

Home healthcare delivery is carried out by a team of healthcare workers consisting of physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, dieticians and medical social workers. Home health aides, personal care aides, nurse aides or certified caregivers are important members of this team as they play a vital role in the lives of patients. They are closer to the patients than any team member and may even be reliable sources of information when assessing patients progress or response to treatment during management.

According to the U.S Labor Bureau, Home Health Aides (HHA) and Personal Care Aides (PCA) are the fastest growing occupations. A career in HHA and PCA is a rewarding one as they help support vulnerable people in time of need, while making a living for themselves as well. This textbook used for a HHA/ PCA training program/ certification course will equip you with the basic knowledge and skills necessary for you to work as a Home Health Aide (Home Health Assistant), Personal Care Aide, Nurse Aide, or certified Caregiver as it is called in some parts of the world.
