Requirements
- Yes, crochet basics and intermediate knowledge is needed, my Ultimate Course for Beginner and Intermediate Crochet is recommended
- Tools needed to get started are a #50 knitting needle for Broomstick Lace, oneor several hairpins for Hairpin Lace and several large sized crochet hooks for Tunisian Lace
Description
This course takes an in-depth look at 3 Heritage Lace techniques: Broomstick Lace, Hairpin Lace and Tunisian Crochet and Lace.
Each technique is given some historical background and a detailed look at the tools used, so students can make their own choice about which ones to purchase.
Students with basic crochet knowledge learn how to easily create Broomstick Lace and Broomstick Mesh with the use of knitting needles and how to design with and incorporate this technique into their own projects.
Students learn how to use different size hairpins to make Hairpin strips for one strip creations and how to combine several strips for larger designs.
Students learn how to master the basic Tunisian stitch, Tunisian half-double, Tunisian cross stitch and Tunisian knit stitch. They progress to complete Tunisian Lace.
Time for practice, project ideas and design suggestions are included in each section.

Rita is a retired educator with over 40 years of classroom experience, from Montessori Kinder Garden to Adult Education in a College setting.
Growing up in Europe, she studied and trained all aspects of fiber work and has taught Fiber Arts workshops for the last 20 years. They range from “Heirloom Treasures Fiber Combinations” in Florida to “It’s not your Grandmother’s Crochet Any More” at UNCA.
Rita is now retired in Asheville, NC as a full time fiber artist. She has taught Heritage fiber classes and workshops for UNCA, the Center for Creative Retirement, the Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in TN, fiber weekend retreats and local classes. In addition to the teaching aspect, Rita loves restoration work on antique pieces and is well known for her designer creations, especially Christening gowns.
She regularly demonstrates at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway, with highlight events of Fiber Day and Heritage Weekend. Rita has been the educational demonstrator at the Southern Highland Guild Craft Fairs in the Asheville Cellular Center and currently serves on the educational committee of the Guild.
Her first book: "Heritage Crochet in a new Light" was published in July 2017. Her second book "Crochet for Knitters - a Marriage of hook and needles" was published in the fall of 2018.
Rita is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and a Blue Ridge National Heritage Artist. She is a Craft Yarn Council certified instructor.
