Mediumship is the communication between those in Spirit and those in the physical plane of existence.
Mediumship bridges the gap between the seen and the unseen, the physical and the etheric, the known and the unknown. A person who can do this type of communication is a medium.
The National Spiritualist Association of Churches defines a medium as:
“One whose organism is sensitive to vibrations from the spirit world and through whose instrumentality, intelligences in that world are able to convey messages and produce the phenomena of Spiritualism.”
It’s all energy – connecting to a specific frequency
It’s all information
You can use one or all of these abilities
Mental mediumship
Originates from the base of your brain, the center of your cerebrospinal nervous system.
Information comes through the medium’s mind and senses, they’re the only one who receives the information.
The most common form of mediumship.
Includes:
Clairvoyance—intuitive or psychic seeing and vision
Clairaudience—intuitive or psychic hearing
Clairalience—intuitive or psychic smelling
Clairgustance—intuitive or psychic tasting
Clairsentience—intuitive or psychic feeling and sensing
Claircognizance—intuitive or psychic knowing, direct knowledge from Spirit
Physical mediumship
Centered in the solar plexus, which controls your sympathetic nervous system.
Information is observable by everyone present, not just the medium (sometimes not the medium at all)
Less common today.
Includes phenomena such as:
Transfiguration—the appearance of faces and figures in front of the medium’s face and body
Direct voice—in which voices from Spirit are heard by means of a voice box being formed from ectoplasm, often through the use of a mediumship trumpet
Table tipping—the movement of a table in response to questions asked of those in Spirit
Trance mediumship and channeling—in which the medium goes into a trance state and allows a noncorporeal entity (someone in Spirit) to enter and animate their physical body
Automatic writing and automatic drawing—often done while the medium holds a pen and paper, or has their hands on a keyboard, and directly channels information from spirit in written or art form
Apportation—the movement of objects, often through solid objects such as walls and doors
Independent slate writing—in which two slates are bound together with chalk or lead in the middle for Spirit to produce written messages
Healing
Mediumship brings healing to people who are grieving. Knowing their loved one is OK and continues to exist and being able to tie up emotional lose ends can bring enormous relief to grief.
Guidance
Our loved ones in Spirit still love us and want to guide us through life. Mediumship brings messages of guidance and support.
Connection to Spirit/source
During the best mediumship messages, the sitter (the person receiving the message) feels the love coming through from their loved one and a connection to Spirit. You know you’re not alone. That there’s more than just this to life.
Why develop your mediumship abilities?
Connection with your own loved ones in Spirit
Connection with your Spirit guides and higher guidance
Connection with Spirit/source
Control over the process
Personal growth and development
A way to provide healing to others
Potential professional career
There are 3 natural laws that primarily come into play with mediumship.
Natural laws - the laws that govern how everything in this universe works. E.g. the law of gravity. It works no matter how you personally feel about it.
Everything in the universe exists in a state of vibration.
It’s all about the frequency at which it vibrates.
Each person—in physical form or not—vibrates at their own frequency.
Mediumship connects with the specific frequency of your sitters and their loved ones
By tuning into that frequency, you’re able to access information.
This information is available because we’re all made of the same fundamental energy.
As you raise your own vibration, you’re able to communicate with spirits and guides of higher vibrations. This is due to the next natural law: the law of attraction.
Like attracts like.
Applies to everything
Is governed by our thoughts and inspired by our emotions.
Ask for your highest good to to bring through Spirit intelligences of a high vibration. By holding this as your thought as you open to Spirit, this is all you attract and allow to communicate with and through you.
Continuing to educate yourself about mediumship, natural law, Spiritualism and its phenomena, you attract those in Spirit—and in the physical world—who are also educated and can help you further your education.
By seeking and actively working to be a better person, to be more inspired and use that inspiration and understanding in our daily lives, you attract those to you who are likewise.
The law of attraction applies to both your physical and spiritual life, due to the law of continuity.
Governs all laws and is applied to both the physical and spiritual spectrums.
“There is no break between physical and spiritual law…the law covers the entire spectrum of being to include both matter and spirit.” - Morris Pratt Institute’s Educational Course on Modern Spiritualism
There is only one continuous spectrum of natural law that applies to everything in the spiritual and physical universes.
This natural law is referenced in the Bible in a couple of places including the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:10 as “thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” as well as the Hermetic saying, “as above, so below; as within, so without; as the universe, so the soul.”
The law of continuity means that natural laws apply in all cases, everywhere.
Depending on who you ask and what books you read, you’ll find some other natural laws that also come into play with mediumship. These include:
The law of conservation of energy
The total energy of a system remains constant and is, over time, is conserved. In relation to Spiritualism and mediumship, it means that the spark of life that animates us can’t be lost or destroyed. This is the part of Spiritualism that believes our personal identity exists beyond the physical change of death. The energy of who we are doesn’t disappear, it transforms.
The law of free will
Everyone, always, has free will. You have choice after choice in this lifetime. This pertains to mediumship in the sense that Spirit can’t make you or your sitter do anything. No matter what the message is, the person receiving it always has the free will to do with it as they please.
The law of thought (or the law of thinking)
Thoughts are powerful. As Raymond Holliwell writes in Working with the Law, “Thought is a subtle element; although it is invisible to the physical sight, it is an actual force or substance as real as electricity, light, heat, water or even stone.”
In terms of mediumship, your thoughts affect your vibration, which affects the level of Spirit you’re able to connect with, as well as the clarity of the information you receive.
The law of love
Some say that love is the highest law. Love bridges distance, perceived differences and heals even deep and long-ago wounds. Approach mediumship, your sitters and folks in Spirit with an open, loving heart.
The law of cause and effect
Every action produces a reaction – you get out of your mediumship what you put into it. If you don’t sit in meditation or actively work on your relationship with your guides and yourself, you likely won’t progress much. But if you do, you’ll unfold in the ways that are for your highest good.
Meditation is just plain good for you
Reduced anxiety, lowered blood pressure, improved mood, better memory, better immune response, and being able to release ways of thinking that don’t serve you well
Getting to know yourself better, connecting with your divine self and your guides, understanding what you’re doing here on this Earth, and healing old wounds, to name a few
You get a break from the madness of the world!
Meditation feels good (once you start doing it regularly)
Once incorporated into your life, it becomes a normal part of it
You begin to have less resistance to doing it
It helps you focus and relax your mind at the same time
It helps you be able to get quiet enough to hear/sense Spirit
It helps you connect with your own inner light
It helps you raise your vibration
It helps you do your inner work (or become aware of what needs to be done) so you can get clear messages
Find what works for you
I love mindfulness (and it has great benefits for developing mediumship)
Try different things
Start with 2 minutes a day
Don’t get hung up on the outcome – every meditation is a success, no matter what it feels like
Counting sheep is a widely-known method for falling asleep (at least you’ve probably heard of it, even if you haven’t tried it). Counting helps you concentrate and focus your mind on something, which allows it to relax.
Counting to 10
As you inhale, mentally count 1
As you exhale, mentally count 2
Continue going: inhale 3, exhale 4, inhale 5, exhale 6, inhale 7, exhale 8, inhale 9, exhale 10
Then start again from 1 and repeat
You can keep track on your fingers if you like
1. What's the difference between mental and physical mediumship?
2. Struggling with accepting your abilities.
3. Why do I know when people are going to pass?
4. Setting boundaries with Spirit.
5. Do I teach other classes?
6. Trance mediumship and physical mediumship.
7. Do I have a home circle or an online psychometry class?
(There is actually no feedback form for you to fill out that's mentioned in this video. You automatically get the bonus materials at the end of this course, although I'd also love your feedback/rating on Udemy, however you feel about the course.)
If you ask for your highest and best good as you open up to Spirit, that’s all you’ll get
This goes back to the laws of attraction and continuity, two of the natural laws that govern mediumship
You attract to you what you want and ask for—both in the physical and nonphysical worlds
“I ask only for my highest and best good.”
Stating your intent, sets your boundaries - your highest good is all you will accept and nothing else.
Boundaries are vital in a healthy relationship with Spirit
You need to learn how to set healthy boundaries with people in the physical world, in your everyday interactions, in order to be able to easily set healthy boundaries and intention with Spirit
Practice by saying “no”
Check your internal guidance and follow it
Speak up for yourself, even in small ways
Fortunately, learning to set boundaries with Spirit helps with setting boundaries in the everyday world and vice versa
The importance of getting grounded and staying that way.
Place your feet on the ground and sit tall in your seat, with your back straight and your sitting bones making contact with the seat. You can also do this standing up.
Visualize your crown extending to the sky and roots growing from the soles of your feet and penetrating deep into the earth.
Position your feet at a 45-degree angle outward, with your knees and legs opening outward from your hips. Visualize a key or knob on the soles of your feet. I think of bicycle shoes that lock into your bike pedals.
Now swivel your feet so they’re parallel to each other while imagining they’re locking into the Earth, connecting and grounding you. You can do this with or without shoes on, it doesn’t matter.
You can even do it just with the intent that you are grounding down, but the small motion can make it seem more real and sets your intention.
Breathe – take 3 deep cleansing breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth with an “aaahhh!”
Spend time in nature – trees ground you and hugging them is good for you. Even walking around your neighborhood and connecting with the energy of plants rooted into the Earth will provide grounding.
Take Epsom salt baths or use salt scrubs – salts can cleanse your energy and remove the static and grunge that can build up in your energy field. Imagine anything that no longer serves you washing away as you bathe.
Exercise – exercise brings you into your physical body, grounding out your energy. Use whatever form of exercise works best for you: walking, running, playing sports, yoga, tai chi, etc.
Eat well – food is inherently grounding as it’s what keeps your physical body running. Your body is an engine, so put the right kind of fuel in it so that it runs well.
Use crystals and stones – certain crystals and stones that are made of dense, hard materials have very grounding energy, e.g. hematite (including magnetite, specularite and iron rose), blue or black kyanite, black tourmaline and obsidian.
Sex – sex, alone or with another, activates the root chakra and can be very grounding.
Sitting or standing tall, visualize white light entering the crown of your head and traveling down your chakras, lighting and energizing each one in turn.
First your crown chakra lights up in white, then your third eye becomes a brilliant purple, then your throat becomes bright blue, your heart turns an emerald green, your solar plexus radiates bright yellow, your navel glows orange and your root chakra burns a deep red.
From your root chakra, see a golden rope of light connecting you to the Earth. You are grounded and connected to the energy of all that is, to Infinite Intelligence.

What we're covering in this class: ways to raise your vibration.
You can use these methods to keep your vibration raised on a daily basis and to lift it back up when it feels low or your energy gets sluggish or icky-feeling.
Meditation: a wonderful way to check in with yourself and attune to your higher self.
Spend time in nature: whether you’re hugging trees or simply enjoying a flower growing from the Earth, nature can reset your energy and give you a boost.
Express gratitude: no matter what’s going on in your life, there’s got to be something you can be grateful for, and coming from a place of gratitude brings more of what you love in your life to your life experience.
Find things of beauty and contemplate them: From nature to art, notice the beauty in your life and spend some time with it.
Laugh: Spirit loves laughter. Laughing does so much good for your energy and emotions.
Listen to music: Whatever your preferred music is, it’ll lift your spirits up from wherever they were before you began listening.
Sing or play an instrument: Singing and creating music raises your vibration and releases stuck emotions.
Do acts of kindness: Being kind to others, in small ways and big, not only raises the vibration of the planet, but your own as well.
Accept personal responsibility: One of the tenets of Spiritualism is, “We affirm the moral responsibility of individuals, and that we make our own happiness or unhappiness as we obey or disobey Nature’s physical and spiritual laws.” Accepting responsibility for how your life is right now actually gives you a lot of power. Taking ownership puts you in the driver’s seat and allows you to make change, as needed.
Be aware of your thoughts: Your thoughts, emotions and actions create your life, from the practical, everyday aspects to the energetic situations you draw into your life. They also affect how much you’re enjoying your experience in each moment. Becoming aware of what you think about and how you’re thinking allows you to change so your thoughts serve your highest good.
Take care of your body: Physical activity and eating nourishing food raises your body’s vibration, supports your emotional well-being and provides the nutrition and chemicals your brain needs to function well.
Heal your past: A lot of us have hard things in our past. It’s OK. And it’s time to move forward from them, one step at a time. As you release the past and your past story, your vibration will rise.
Practice forgiveness and compassion: Being compassionate and forgiving of yourself and others is an incredible gift you give to yourself and the world. It raises the vibration everywhere.
Set and maintain boundaries: Boundaries allow you to stand in your power and sovereignty. The wonderful thing about working on your boundaries is that any improvements you make in your spiritual life will positively affect your physical life and vice versa. Healthy boundaries help you have clean and clear energy.
Stop gossiping: This is a don’t do, because gossiping about others lowers your vibration. The rule I follow is to only say things about others that I’d be comfortable saying in their presence.
Create a peaceful space in your life: You need space to breathe, relax and be yourself, both in the physical world and in your personal emotional and energetic space. You can create this by decluttering your life—whether that’s your house or your thoughts.
Sit in your usual meditation posture. Take three deep breaths, fully inhaling and exhaling. If you like, you can let out your exhales with a big sigh, an audible “aahhhhh!”
Allow your heart center to open. You can do this by visualizing warm white or pink light enveloping the area around your chest, seeping in and energizing your heart. Or you can think of a loved one or anything that makes your heart come alive: a pile of puppies with big eyes playing together, a child in a meadow of flowers, whatever works for you.
Visualize yourself. You can see yourself as a baby or young child or as you are today, however you’re able to hold an image of yourself with compassion.
Now say this mantra (in your head or aloud):
May I be filled with loving kindness
May I be healthy and well
May I be safe in all ways
May I be happy and at ease
Hold the feeling of love and compassion for yourself for a few breaths. You can repeat the mantra several times if you want or you can move on.
Now picture someone you love and are close to. Bring the feeling of them into your heart and mind and hold them there.
Say the mantra with them in mind:
May you be filled with loving kindness
May you be healthy and well
May you be safe in all ways
May you be happy and at ease
Now bring to mind someone you feel neutral about, perhaps someone you don’t know all that well, such as your mail carrier or the person who rings up your groceries at the store.
Visualize them and hold them in your heart and repeat the mantra again:
May you be filled with loving kindness
May you be healthy and well
May you be safe in all ways
May you be happy and at ease
Next, bring to your mind and heart someone you dislike or have a difficult relationship with, either in the past or present. It’s OK if it feels difficult to hold them in a loving way and to repeat the mantra for them. Allow yourself to experience the feelings of discomfort you feel.
Repeat the mantra to them:
May you be filled with loving kindness
May you be healthy and well
May you be safe in all ways
May you be happy and at ease
Now move your awareness to your whole family as well as your neighborhood and/or local community. Include yourself as well and say the mantra again:
May we be filled with loving kindness
May we be healthy and well
May we be safe in all ways
May we be happy and at ease
Finally, zoom out in your consciousness and envelope the entire globe in your mind’s eye, holding the Earth in your heart and repeat the mantra one last time:
May we be filled with loving kindness
May we be healthy and well
May we be safe in all ways
May we be happy and at ease
Here’s a shorthand version of who you picture in each mantra:
Yourself
An easy, loving relationship
A neutral relationship
A difficult relationship
Your neighborhood/community
The world
A summary of class 3 and your homework for the next class.
1. Is letting go of pain part of forgiveness?
2. What setting are you in during your meditation?
3. My experience sending loving kindness to others and synchronicity.
4. Healthy mediumship and do you tell people what you get or what they want to hear?
It’s just as important to know how to close the door as it is how to open it
For many developing mediums, the issue is being able to shut it off more than it is being able to turn it on
If you feel like you’re not getting enough info, learning to deliberately open and close to information from Spirit will also help
Closing the “door” to information from Spirit doesn’t turn off your intuition
Begin each meditation or session with a prayer of intention
Ask for what you need
State that your door is open
An example:
Gracious Spirit, Infinite Intelligence, I know that I am an open and clear medium for (person’s name) to bring them messages that are useful, uplifting and what they need to hear and know right here and now for their highest and best good. I ask this in all honesty and sincerity. My door is open. And so it is.
For a group meditation/circle:
Gracious Spirit, Infinite Intelligence, thank you for bringing us together today so that we may learn and grow together, in a nurturing, supportive circle. Help us have the courage to give out the messages we receive, knowing that only the highest and best good comes to us. Our doors are open. And so it is.
Visualizing a mechanism to open and close yourself to Spirit communication is super useful
The door: Imagine a hatch or trapdoor on the top of your skull, right on your crown chakra. It’s able to open and close, directed by your will and intent.
It can be like a trapdoor that opens up out of the top of your skull. It can be a sliding hatch that retracts into your skull. Go with whatever image works for you.
If you don’t yet have a hatch, let’s make one.
Close your eyes. Sit relaxed and upright. Take 3 deep breaths.
Allow yourself to connect with your crown chakra and a spirit guide or higher energy in Spirit.
See your guide creating the opening in the top of your skull, using white light (a white light laser powered by pure energy from Infinite Intelligence). First it cuts one side, then the second, then the third, then the forth.
Allow your crown chakra to fill with white light. Feel its warmth and let it relax and open your door
Bonus: add a satellite dish, antenna or receiver of some kind ?
When you want to connect with Spirit, visualize the door in your head opening, allowing communication to come in.
At the end of a reading or circle, make sure you close your hatch!
You can use a closing prayer/benediction:
I’ll leave that with you with love and light. Please take your people home with you. My doors are closed.
Thank you, Spirit, for being here with us today. For the learning and friendship we’ve shared and the knowledge we’ve received. Shine the light of our highest good along our path as we go forward from here today. Our doors are closed. And so it is.
As you do this, visualize your hatch closing to communication from Spirit.
Decide on and use a physical signal to let Spirit know you’re ready to connect
E.g. Rubbing your hands together
Decide on and use a physical signal to let Spirit know you’re done connecting
E.g. Sweeping your hands through the air or tapping the top of your head
Having a regular meditation schedule in which you’re open to Spirit communication is helpful
It lets Spirit know you’re serious about developing and when you’re available (so you’re not bugged all the time)
It gets you into an internal rhythm of your own subtle energy and inner self being more ready to be open and connect with Spirit at those times. We’re creatures of habit. Use it to your advantage.
So what’s next?
Keep taking classes
Find a mentor or group to sit with regularly
Meditate regularly – this helps you learn more about yourself, which helps you distinguish Spirit communication from your own imagination, and also teaches your mind to focus, which allows you to connect with and stay connected to the specific frequency of a person in Spirit
Journal about your meditations
Read books, e.g. Mediumship by Konstanza Morning Star
Know that if you set your intention, Spirit will step in and guide you to what you need. That’s how it works.
Adapted from Konstanza Morning Star’s book Medium
Relax your body
Take 3 deep breaths
Relax your mind and brain. Allow thoughts to drift away and let go of all expectations.
Let the sounds around you relax you even more.
Allow your feet to relax. Release all the tension in your toes and ankles.
Allow your shins, calves and knees to relax.
Allow your thighs, bottom and pelvis to relax.
Allow your lower abdomen and back to relax.
Allow your upper abdomen, upper back, shoulders to relax
Allow your arms, elbows, forearms, wrists and hands to relax
Allow your throat and neck to relax.
Your jaw, mouth and tongue. Your cheeks, ears, eyes and eyelids. Your forehead and skull.
Each breath becomes more peaceful and relaxed.
Center yourself
Bring your awareness to your spiritual center inside your body. Perhaps in your heart center, in your belly or in your head.
See where you feel most balanced and centered.
Feel your energy gather in this special place and notice how you’re beginning to feel more vibrant and alert.
Focus on your breath
Gently focus your attention on your breath.
Feel your body expand as you inhale – your chest, your belly
Notice the air leave your lungs and feel your body get smaller as you exhale.
As you inhale, feel your body life. As you exhale, allow your mind to unwind.
With each inhalation, allow your heart center, that loving place in the center of your chest, to expand and become softer and more loving.
As you exhale, breathe out anything that no longer serves you.
Inhale love. Exhale tension.
Blend earth and divine energy
Visualize roots extending from the bottom of your feet into the Earth. Connecting you with the Earth and its grounding energy.
As you breathe in, allow yourself to breathe in Earth energy through the bottoms of your feet, up into your body, up to your heart center.
With your next breath, visualize divine energy entering in through your crown chakra, flowing down through your head and into your heart center.
These two energies blend together within you, igniting the divine spark within you.
Attune with the divine
Allow your divine spark within you, that animates you and gives you life, to become alive. Allow it to ignite into a flame that burns brightly, fueled by divine energy.
Allow the divine flame within you to merge with the divine presence all around you. Bring yourself into attunement, into alignment, with the source of all that is. Imagine tuning yourself to the energy of the divine, like an instrument being tuned to a tuning fork.
You are a part of this divine energy, so you know how to vibrate in alignment with it. Stay here for a while, enjoying your connection with Spirit.
