Explore project basics, life cycle, and tools to drive healthcare initiatives, learn change management models for navigating organizational change, and apply communication techniques to strengthen your team and your organization.
Learn healthcare project leadership basics, define common PM terminology, identify the five project lifecycle phases, choose appropriate documents and tools for each phase, and improve meeting management for success.
Unlock core project management and leadership skills for healthcare, define milestones and objectives, improve senior management communication, and drive successful initiatives with metrics, measurement, and change management.
Explore core project management terms like stakeholders, scope, deliverable, milestones, WBS, charter, assumptions, constraints, and change control, and see how they shape the project lifecycle.
Navigate the five stages of the project lifecycle—initiation, planning, execution, monitor and control, close out—using the project charter and project plan, and risk management for healthcare leadership.
Bring the project lifecycle together through stories and practical tools, guiding initiation with a business case, project requirements, and the project charter for a falls prevention program.
Learn how to create a project charter for a home health falls prevention program, detailing title, sponsor, manager, purpose, description, stakeholders, risks, goals, milestones, deliverables, and level of authority.
Master initiation phase tools by engaging sponsors and stakeholders, mapping milestones and tasks, identifying risks, and using affinity diagrams to organize cross-department inputs.
Explore evidence-based falls programs, assess current processes, and use an affinity diagram to group ideas, identify training gaps, and map milestones for program selection and policy updates.
Outline milestones and deliverables, then break them into actionable steps with owners and due dates. Establish a formal plan featuring affinity diagrams, a project team, and a clear communication plan.
Use the stakeholder register to list stakeholders and their information needs, and implement a formal communication plan with regional representation and a consistent update cadence.
Plan change management by identifying barriers, mitigating them, and winning internal influencers as champions; build a WBS with owners, due dates, and dependencies to guide cross-department communication and scheduling.
Learn how the execution phase drives a healthcare project from pre-implementation tasks like selecting falls program and updating policies to implementation steps such as training and go-live at north site.
Apply user experience principles to healthcare project documentation, engaging clinicians via focus groups, crafting jargon-free policy updates, and aligning EHR changes with falls program adoption.
Apply the communication equation to minimize miscommunication by inviting only necessary attendees, and run purposeful meetings with clear preparation, a pre-shared agenda, defined action items, and thorough post-meeting follow-up.
Monitor performance by comparing actual to planned and identifying risks for contingency planning. Gather user feedback from pilots to refine training materials and rollout.
Projects are temporary endeavors with a defined end, so closeout requires a handoff to operations supported by checklists for training, equipment, and new hire orientation.
Conduct a lessons learned session to review each project phase, identify what worked and what didn’t, and document improvements in close-out templates for future projects.
You completed the beginner level healthcare project management coursework, gaining foundational skills to improve project success in healthcare organizations and enhance experiences for clinicians and patients.
Identify stages in the trans theoretical model of change and compare Lewin and Kotter while identifying barriers and solutions across the healthcare project lifecycle.
Explore how change management guides healthcare project success by applying the transtheoretical model (TTM) to behavioral change across precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination.
Explore how Lewin's unfreeze, change, and freeze phases guide preparing teams, managing change as a process, and supporting members through uncertainty, with Kotter expanding these concepts to practical healthcare projects.
Establish urgency in the unfreeze stage by highlighting threats like rising readmissions and cancellations, then build a guiding coalition and communicate a clear vision through the project charter.
Empower broad based action by removing barriers and conducting risk assessments. Generate short term wins, celebrate progress, and consolidate gains into a change management plan with mitigation processes.
Learn about freeze/refreeze in change management, anchor new approaches in culture, and highlight success stories and metrics like reduced hospital readmissions, increased patient compliance, and staff satisfaction.
Does your organization struggle with bringing projects to completion on time? Do you wish your programs would have better adoption rates? Do you struggle with team resistance when trying to roll out a new initiative? Do you wish you had tools to help improve communication in your organization?
If you answered yes to any of the above, then this course is for you!
These are common barriers to success in healthcare organizations. Clinicians and clinical leaders often wear multiple hats. Whether that hat is preceptor, project manager, project leader, staff development, or one of the many other hats that are required for that catch-all phrase at the end of most job descriptions: "And any other tasks required by management" - we're not often taught the skills to be successful in those roles. We went to school to be nurses, therapists, and physicians – not managers, project managers, or organizational change leaders.
This course combines content from my Healthcare Project Management, Change Management in Healthcare, and Communication Basics courses - providing a comprehensive introduction to tools and techniques to set your healthcare initiatives up for success. You'll be introduced to project basics, like the project life cycle and tools and techniques to help achieve success in each phase. You'll gain an understanding of change management models and methods of navigating organizational change during each phase of the project life cycle. And you'll receive techniques for improving communication within your team and throughout your organization.
I've included additional activities in this course to support your journey and encourage immediate application of your new knowledge.
Let the journey begin!
