In this introductory lecture, we will explore the purpose of health and safety legislation and why it is essential for creating a safe and supportive working environment. You will gain an understanding of key UK laws such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the role of the Health and Safety Executive in enforcing these regulations. This also covers employer and employee responsibilities, the impact of non-compliance and how strong health and safety policies can improve wellbeing and productivity at work.
In Lecture 2, we'll focus on the importance of risk assessments in identifying and managing hazards in the workplace. You’ll look into how risk assessments help uncover both physical and psychological risks, evaluate the likelihood and impact of potential harm and guide the development of practical safety measures. We’ll then break down the three key stages of the risk assessment process: identifying hazards, evaluating risks and applying control measures. By understanding each step, you’ll see how risk assessments play a crucial role in preventing accidents, reducing workplace stress and creating a safer environment for everyone.
Here, we'll explore how safe working processes and procedures protect employees from harm and support a strong safety culture within an organisation. You'll learn how these practices are based on risk assessments and legal requirements and how they guide the behaviours and actions of everyone in the workplace. We'll look at three key areas: how organisations create and communicate clear health and safety policies, how they implement practical and effective working procedures and how they monitor and review these practices to keep improving. By uncovering each of these areas, you’ll see how safe working practices help prevent incidents, protect wellbeing and build trust between employers and employees.
In Lecture 4, we'll look into the critical role of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in ensuring workplace safety. We will uncover how PPE acts as the final barrier between workers and hazardous substances or environments, particularly in industries involving chemicals, biologics or sensitive equipment. You’ll understand how PPE helps reduce the risk of injury or illness when other safety measures are not enough. We'll look at how to select the right PPE for different types of tasks, the importance of proper training and maintenance and how to monitor PPE use to ensure it remains effective and compliant with safety regulations.
Here, we'll examine how well-prepared emergency procedures and effective first aid responses can make a vital difference in the workplace. You'll explore the types of emergencies that may arise across various industries and how organisations can plan ahead to minimise harm. From fire safety and chemical spills to medical incidents, this lecture will highlight the steps businesses must take to protect their workforce. We'll also look at the importance of first aid, the legal requirements for trained responders and how the right training and equipment can keep employees safe and supported until professional help arrives.
In Lecture 6, we'll explore how building a strong health and safety culture can transform workplace wellbeing and long-term organisational performance. You'll learn how management commitment, ongoing training and employee involvement all contribute to making health and safety a core part of everyday operations. We’ll also uncover how monitoring safety performance helps drive continuous improvement and supports legal compliance.
In the concluding lecture, we will reflect on the knowledge and skills you have acquired during the course and how you can utilise them in real-life scenarios.

Are you responsible for ensuring health and safety compliance in your organisation? Do you need to conduct risk assessments to protect your employees and reduce workplace hazards? Are you tasked with implementing safer working practices and improving safety standards? If you answered yes to any of these, this course is for you!
Health and safety practices have been a core foundation for establishing compliance and safe Standard Operating Procedures or SOPs across industries. Employee wellbeing is not just a requirement but a prerequisite for boosting morale and productivity. In a 2022 study, it was found that companies with effective work safety policies can reduce workplace injuries by as much as 40%, thereby improving employee morale and productivity. This statistic highlights that employer policies that protect employee wellbeing are more likely to boost morale and keep employees productive over the long term. Indeed, when employees feel safe and secure at the workplace, they not only feel valued but can also do better work without the fear of getting injured. This type of security helps employees engage more at work and enables employees to develop a sense of loyalty and camaraderie within the organisation. This course is specifically designed to teach business leaders about the benefits of understanding the importance of health and safety and how it can positively affect the organisation.
Over a series of short, engaging video lectures, you'll be guided through the essential principles of workplace health and safety, equipping you with the knowledge and confidence to work safely, responsibly and in compliance with legal requirements. We'll start by exploring the key aspects of UK health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act, your legal rights and responsibilities and the duties of your employer to provide a safe working environment. You'll gain an understanding of how regulations such as COSHH, RIDDOR and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations apply in real workplace scenarios. You'll then move on to hazard identification and risk assessment, learning how to spot common risks in different work environments, evaluate their severity and likelihood and document appropriate control measures. Practical examples will show you how to apply the principles of risk management to your specific role. As part of building your practical skills, you'll explore how to implement and follow safe working practices and procedures, such as maintaining a tidy workspace, using equipment correctly, managing manual handling tasks and following safe systems of work.
You’ll also be introduced to industry-specific procedures where relevant. You'll gain a thorough understanding of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including how to choose the right equipment for different tasks, how to inspect and maintain it and when and how to use it effectively to reduce risk and ensure compliance. The course also covers emergency preparedness and response, helping you recognise different types of workplace emergencies such as fire, chemical spills, or injuries and how to react appropriately. You'll learn about raising alarms, evacuation procedures and the basics of first aid, including how to assist until professional help arrives. Finally, we'll explore how you can actively promote a culture of health and safety in your workplace. From reporting near misses and encouraging safe behaviour, to participating in safety briefings and supporting colleagues, you’ll see how every employee plays a vital role in creating a safer, healthier work environment for all.
