Description

This Hazard Communication, Hazardous Materials and Chemical Safety training is suitable for personnel requiring an awareness and understanding of the hazards and controls associated with chemicals. It is aimed at ensuring they have a common understanding of the regulations guiding the handling of chemicals as well as industry best practice when working with chemicals. The course examines the The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) and the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). It looks at the similarities, the differences and the required programs, procedures, labelling formats and the roles and responsibilities of manufacturers, importers, distributors, employers and employees in the chemical handling chain.

The course also gives participants an overview of the requirements for the handling and storage of hazardous substances and understanding of common handling and storage methods for chemicals. This includes discussions on Safety Data Sheet and Label formats like the GHS, NFPA, HMIS, WHMIS, etc.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to;

  • Identify the legislation and regulations which outline the handling and storage of hazardous substances

  • Explain the health effects of working with hazardous substances, and the various ways that these can enter the body

  • Explain the use of Safety Data Sheets and Assessments within the subsisting regulations

  • Explain the common labelling system and identify the standard symbols

  • Explain the requirements for storage, handling and disposal of hazardous substances

  • Define the control measures for handling hazardous substances and explain the control hierarchy

  • Explain the process for managing hazardous substances in the event of a spill

In addition, participants will be able to;

  • Understand the behaviour of chemicals and analyse them based on their characteristics e.g. their flashpoint, vapor pressure, specific gravity, flammability, etc

  • Explain the concept of toxicology and show clear understanding of the routes of entry for chemicals into the body

  • Discuss exposure limits and have an understanding of different measures of these limits, e.g. IDLH, TLV, TWA, PEL, STEL, LD50, etc

The course contains case studies, additional explanatory videos, quizzes, further study materials and sample data sheets to help your understanding of the subject matter.

Who this course is for:

  • This training is suitable for personnel requiring an awareness or understanding of the hazards and controls associated with chemicals.
  • All personnel that are reasonably anticipated to come in contact with chemicals in the workplace are expected to take this course.
  • Supervisors and Managers that wish to acquire better understanding of HAZCOM standards and procedures for a safe workplace related to handling of chemicals
  • Safety Professionals that wish to learn and/or refresh their knowledge of HAZCOM and HAZMAT standards, programs, policies and procedures.
