Mudras are broadly categoried on the basis of body parts with which they are performed, such as mudras of hand, mudras of head, mudras of whole body etc.

Chin Mudra/Gyan Mudra is a hand gesture to combine index finger representing the air element with the thumb representing the fire element to achieve everlasting
Vayu mudra is also called the vayu shamak mudra as it is used to suppress the excess of vayu (air) element in your body. This is performed by using index finger and the thumb.
Aakash mudra is also called the aakash vardhak mudra as it is used to enhance the power of space element in your body. This is performed by using middle finger and the thumb..
Shoonya mudra is also called the aakash shamak mudra as it is used to regulate the space element in your body. This is performed by using middle finger and the thumb.
Prithvi mudra is used to enhance the power of earth element in your body. This is performed by using ring finger and the thumb.
This mudra regulates the earth element and causes the same effect in the human body the way Sun regulates various aspects of the Earth. This mudra is done using the ring finger and the thumb. This mudra is also called ‘Prithvi Shamak Mudra’.
Varun is the God of water, which represents the fluids in the human body. Fluids cover entire glandular secretions and other liquids. The little finger of the hand represents the water element. The balance of body fluids indicates good health and the imbalance indicates the presence of some ailment. To stablize body fluids Thumb is joined with the little finger to form VARUN MUDRA.
This is a variant of Varun Mudra and is quite important for its independent use. This is done with little finger and thumb.
Water, which represent the fluids and secretions in the human body, Earth which represents the tissue mass in the body and Fire, which represents the energy systems in the body are all used in this mudra for getting the benefits in problems that are due to imbalance of these elements.
Apaan mudra is a combination of earth element represented by ring finger and the space element, represented by the middle finger joined with the tip of the thumb which stands for the fire element.
Apaan vayu mudra is a combination of apaan mudra and vayu mudra. In this mudra the tip and the root of the thumb, both are utilized. The tip harnesses the power of ‘Earth’ and ‘space’ element which uses the ring finger and the middle finger resepectively. The root of the thumb is simultaneously regulating the ‘air’ element using the tip of the index finger. This mudra is also called the hridya or heart mudra.
This mudra is an extension of jalodhar nashak mudra explained earlier and it involves using the control over the earth element represented by the ring finger along with regulation of the water element which is represented by the little finger. As per ayurvedic concepts this mudra is also called the cough-nashak mudra.

A treasure of knowledge was created and experimented by ancient Indian Yogis and Sages. One such pitcher of treasure was the gestures or ‘Mudras’ that were advised to be performed while doing yoga practices. There are many forms of mudras done with various parts of the body. One of the most frequently performed ones are done with fingers of both the hands together and are called ‘Hast Mudras’ or gestures of hands. These are related to harnessing the power of and balancing of basic elements of nature which are ‘Fire’, ‘Earth’, ‘Water’, ‘Air’ and ‘Space’ and space. Please do not confuse them with periodic table elements. It is simply that all energies are ‘Fire’, all solid state things are represented by ‘Earth’, all liquid state things are represented by ‘Water’, all gaseous things are represented by ‘Air’ and everything the matter is suspended in as ‘Space’.
