Description

This is the 2nd of the 8 Courses I intend to offer in Group Theory and Chemistry and this is the continuation of the course Group Theory and Chemistry 1.

The concepts like Multiplication of operations and Commuting operators which are needed to understand and appreciate the Group Postulates is discussed in detail with lots of illustrations and practice exercises. The effects of the various symmetry operations on a point in space whose coordinates are (x,y,z) is used for this purpose.

The group postulates, Closure property, Existence of Identity, Associativity property and Inverse property are discussed in detail using illustrations.

One video deals exclusively with Abelian groups.

The principles behind the construction of the multiplication tables for C2v and C3v groups are explained in detail.

The concepts like Order of a group, and Classes of a group are discussed in detail.

There is a detailed discussion of the operation called the Similarity transformation which is needed to separate the elements of a group into classes.

The separation of the elements of the C2v and C3v groups into various classes is also presented in this course.

After completing this course, a student will be equipped with the knowledge to learn the important concept of Point Groups with a clarity of thought.
